Default Michigan State Police Recruits

For those who might have an interest in such things, last week was the first week (partial) for the latest class of MSP Recruits and for the first time they have a web-site so the public can keep track of things.

Our neighbor, who is retired MSP, has a son in this class and to say he is proud of, Kenny, his son, would be an understatement. Kenny and our youngest son literally grew up as brothers, a by product of living out in the country with few neighbors to speak of, and no other boys their age nearby.

Here's the Link: MSP Recruits

God Bless every one of them. May they stay safe.

I worked for Detroit in the 70s and then got laid off. I was laid off for over two years and at the time the State of Michigan had never experienced that. The state could not figure out how to recertify us when we got other jobs, so I ended up going thru a second academy when I got picked up by another department.
Then I taught firearms at Macomb Countys academy in the late 80s.
Since I retired from police work, I have been offered a job teaching at an academy again which I declined. Too many academys for me.

Glad to see a new class has started. Jenny couldn't take this one away from them before she left the governor's mansion. It's a miracle!

Hopefully MSP can continue to run academy classes.

Tell Kenny to go easy on long haired truck drivers from Oklahoma.

My 7.5 months at the WVSP Academy was amongst the longest and toughest months of my life.

God bless those recruits!

I remember the first time I visited the academy after I graduated. It was only a few months later, I think I was doing the mail run and had to drop off paperwork. All the recruits were calling me sir and jumping out of my way. It was kind of amusing at first, then I just wanted to drop the package off and get the heck out because it was getting a little weird. Stop calling me sir, I'm not even off probation yet!!! Now I would just shake my head and laugh.

Good luck to all the prospective troopers!

For what it's worth, Kenny can be seen in the photo entitled, "Waiting on the ramp for PT." He's in the second row, the first row has three Recruits, closest to the camera and can clearly be seen between two of the Recruits in the front row.

You know, seeing him there, especially after reading the comments here by those who have been through their own Academy experience, gives me a deep sense of pride in what he's trying to accomplish. When we moved here our youngest had just been born and Kenny's Mother was a big as a house carrying him. The boys are now men........

To give a little background, our local twp. PD sent Kenny to the MSP Academy about 4 or 5 years ago for certification. After working here in our twp., as well as another local Dept., for a while he moved over to one of the suburbs of Flint, the toughest one, Burton P.D., before recently quitting that Dept. for his newest challenge. After hearing the comments here it sounds like it's more of a challenge than I realized. I know Kenny has been a little nervous about it, especially the academic part but he's always been a smart, respectful, kid so that should help him succeed. On top of that he's got his Dad in his corner, someone who's been there, done that.

I went through the Chicago Police Academy in 1988. I am proud to say I did as it was a hell of an experience. Very professional and very tough. However, the staff was easier on us because we were the "suburban" class and not actual Chicago PD recruits. The staff "liked" us better or so they said after they worked us half to death. Actually I think it was 3/4 to death!

That being said, we didn't have to shave our heads. That recruit class at the MSP looks very serious and very tough. I think it's outstanding that the public can see what they're going through at the academy. Perhaps it will instill a tiny fraction more of respect from the public. Perhaps....

It's Official, Kenny is now one of the MSP's newest 35 Troopers!

The Graduation Ceremony, held yesterday in Lansing Mich, was filled with Tradition & Honor and was attended, along with many others, by two Retired Troopers who had gone through the Academy 70 years ago.
They received a standing ovation from those of us that were there.........

Afterwards we went out for a celebratory dinner then over to the Academy to move Kenny's gear out of what had been his "home" for the last 5 months, but not before Kenny, and his Dad who had attended back in 1978, gave us the grand tour.
As we were going up to his room it was funny watching Kenny fumble around on the elevator trying to find the right floor button. This was the first time he was able to use the elevator in this building even though it had been right down the hall from his room these past 5 months. The stairs were the Recruits only allowed mode of getting from one floor to another.

After all of his gear was loaded up and us old folks were getting ready to roll out, our son, Ian, and Kenny were walking together down a small road on the Academy grounds over to Kenny's car and seeing them together like that made me think of a couple of photos taken about 20 years ago. Our son is riding shotgun for Kenny in this one, in the other the roles are reversed..........

Getting older sure has it's rewards from time to time, and this is one of those times.......

As somebody from just across the border in Ohio, IMHO, MSP is one of the premier State Police organizations in the country. I sometimes work with their investigative arm. Congrats to Trooper Kenny, and may his gumball beacon burn brightly!!!

I did this back in 1969. I'm 63 now and still working. I'm gonna try and make it to 66 at least before I hang it up. The classes are longer and harder now and it's much easier to get bumped out of one. Congratulations to Kenny. I hope he gets a good salty FTO (field training officer) before they turn him loose on his own. He's fixing to learn a lot of stuff they don't teach at the academies. Stay away from the cop groupies.

Charlie, this class was somewhat unique in that out of the 38 that started, only 3 didn't make it, which made an attrition rate of only 8%. During the Graduation Ceremony it was mentioned that since this was one of the smallest, if not the smallest, class size that they've ever had that the higher ratio of Instructors to Students probably played a major role in the higher than normal success rate.

It must have been an interesting process to weed the over 800 applicants down to the 38 that were accepted for the "122nd Trooper Recruit School."

The 35 new MSP Troopers will start working with their FTO's starting tomorrow. It's my understanding that they will work five weeks each on 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts, in no particular order. Kenny said that after these three different shift assignments were completed the FTO would be "undercover" and be observing, from what I could tell, from a distance..........

You have all made me reminisce. While not Michigan SP I can sure remember arrival at the SP academy day 1. We were met at the gate by so many Trooper's tearing up our cars and us as well. It was at that moment I learned that the Vatican was NOT IN ITALY!!! Never forget that day. Many did not make that first week of cuts. Glad I did. That kind of discipline makes you a man.

I recall my time it was at the Police Training Institute,University of Illinois. It was just like going to college,no running everywhere or yelling at you etc. It was still a hard six weeks (1981) but well worth it and I learned a lot.
