Default Daughters USMC Adventure

My daughter had an opportunity to attend a week long educators workshop at the USMC base at Parris Island. It is for those working with high school students so that they can help potential enlistees know what to expect when they arrive on base.

The teachers are submitted to a stripped down version of what the recruits go through in their 8 week? boot camp. They get to be screamed at by the DI's, I'm sure at a lesser volume and fewer expletives, and tour the entire facility over the weeks time.

She got to sit in an F/A18 Hornet (I'm jealous), shoot an M16 (also jealous), fight a Marine with pugil sticks (another story there), eat at the mess hall (mixed review), etc.

She was very impressed with the professionalism and dedication of the soldiers she met. Funny story about the pugil stick fight. She was battling with a recruit when they both thought the whistle blew to stop. The recruit removed his gear and they both looked at the DI. He said "What are you doing? I didn't tell you to stop." So, she turned and clocked the recruit in his head. High fives and cheers all around. A few told her it was the coolest thing they had seen on base.

Overall she said she came away with much more respect for what they do. My parents were both Marines in WWII so she already knew a bit about them. A first class and good program for the USMC to offer. I know she will be able to give high marks to the students she talks to who may be interested in a military career.

To all the Marines in particular and all servicemen on this site in general, thank you for your service.

Sir.
I went to Parris Island, once or twice. It was sometime last century.
They still make good Marines there.

I wondered what all those high school looking students standing out by the Exchange were. (I live on P.I., quite literally.)

Marine boot camp is around 13 weeks longs, divided into phases. All female recruits are sent to PI. Additional training comes afterward, making for about six months or so of training.

DIs are no long allowed to swear at recruits or beat them. I don't know whether they give their rifles (A4s as of Oct) a girl's name or not.

The F18s are at the Marine Air Station, they'll be replaced with F35s eventually. It's mildly deceiving to put potential recruits in the cockpit in terms of enlisted opportunities. Only officers, who will either enter the USMC after college or via the Navy Academy, fly aircraft.

Whatever you do, don't eat at the place that I shall not name that is across the street from the museum on P.I. Just don't.

That is a wonderful picture of your daughter, oh, by the way that looks like a potential son in law standing next to her!! Oh dang it, is that a wedding band on his left hand?? Hard to see in the photo. Our military is needing people with smarts now, and having teachers who provide good information is important.
