My daughter had an opportunity to attend a week long educators workshop at the USMC base at Parris Island. It is for those working with high school students so that they can help potential enlistees know what to expect when they arrive on base.
The teachers are submitted to a stripped down version of what the recruits go through in their 8 week? boot camp. They get to be screamed at by the DI's, I'm sure at a lesser volume and fewer expletives, and tour the entire facility over the weeks time.
She got to sit in an F/A18 Hornet (I'm jealous), shoot an M16 (also jealous), fight a Marine with pugil sticks (another story there), eat at the mess hall (mixed review), etc.
She was very impressed with the professionalism and dedication of the soldiers she met. Funny story about the pugil stick fight. She was battling with a recruit when they both thought the whistle blew to stop. The recruit removed his gear and they both looked at the DI. He said "What are you doing? I didn't tell you to stop." So, she turned and clocked the recruit in his head. High fives and cheers all around. A few told her it was the coolest thing they had seen on base.
Overall she said she came away with much more respect for what they do. My parents were both Marines in WWII so she already knew a bit about them. A first class and good program for the USMC to offer. I know she will be able to give high marks to the students she talks to who may be interested in a military career.
To all the Marines in particular and all servicemen on this site in general, thank you for your service.
