[QUOTE=oldfella;135795132] Now, if I could only get back to my thread, I have another question. Originally I had a tentative deal in the works for the 1998 GMC, $7000 out the door - a bit high, I was told. What do y'all think if I were to offer $6000 OTD? See pics below. Thanks.
Sorry for buttin in on your thred, but still wish you good luck. Offer'em what ever you want,I wont bother you again.

I meant no offense by that remark, honest, I just forgot to use a smiley. Innocent "highjacking" happens often as we try to connect our experiences in the process of offering suggestions and recommendations. I appreciate every one's input here. Thanks.

My Next Find!
This is my next find: 2001 Ford. Asking $8,500 - "83,100 Miles" - Not the size engine I wanted, and not Chev or GMC, but not a bad price, I think. The seller added: "Make an offer" - Tell me, what do you think my max offer should be? Thanks.
Pete--------------- EDIT > I made an offer of $7500... he's thinking on it!
Quoting:
“Super clean F-150, XLT Super Crew, 4.8L V8, 2 WD. Four door and a HUGE cab! This truck is incredibly clean inside and out. Black with gold trim and a custom scoop hood with a hot paint job!
Low mileage Michellin's with aluminum wheels, Ford bed liner. Power steering, power brakes, power windows and doors. Has hitch included as well as K&N air filter. Sliding rear window and AM/FM/CD with Sirius Satelite radio Hardware installed and included!
No mechanical issues at all, runs great and still gets excellent mileage @ 17-18 mpg.”

Oldfella, that would be a 4.6 V-8, don't think Ford ever made a 4.8. The 4.6 is OK just a little under powered for a V-8 with nearly the same mileage as the 5.4 liter. If you will be doing any heavy work/towing hold out for the 5.4 liter as it is a great engine with a lot more power.

Thanks for that info, Capt - it does give me a way out if needed, should he accept my offer - though no heavy work or heavy towing is planned.

For me, the K&N filter and hood scoop would be a strike against this truck. I would prefer to see all OEM equipment on the intake tract. Just my opinion.

I would have my mechanic (who happens to be me ) go over the engine and trans carefully - including a compression check.
Trucks usually have an aftermarket hood like that if they were wrecked or if they've been *hot rodded* or at least driven like it....
Also, I've seen tests done on the GM Diesel Forum that show that the kn filters let a lot of dirt through. They're designed for racing not the street. A compression check will show the general condition of the valve train too.
The intake and hood could also be an indication of someone trying to get decent fuel mileage out of a set-up known to give disappointing mileage. IMHO (and that of others) - That just isn't enough engine for a vehicle that large.
An opened up exhaust with the opened up intake would have me moving along and continuing the quest too.
