Default Used Pick-up truck (?)

Would you believe that I have never owned a truck? Do I need one, not really, but there have times (plenty) I wished I had a truck. I’ve been paying friends with trucks for their use of their sevices, to haul things for me. I have been looking for an older truck, mechanically sound, and not bad looking. I want a soft riding truckm 2-wheel drive, automatic transmission, with back seats. Well, I think I found one, looks great, with a covered bed. It’s a 1998 GMC Sierra 1500 with extended cab with 105,345 miles on the odometer; it has a 5.5L V8, automatic with overdrive - the dealer claims it is a one-owner truck. The dealer wants $7,927 and I talked him down to $7000 out the door. I have not yet driven it, but if I do decide to buy it, I’ll drive it to my trusted mechanic for him to give it good going-over. Wha I need here is your advice, base on the info I have given you. What can you tell me about this particular model truck, and is the price OK? Thanks in advnce for your help.

Pete

That seems like way too much. I saw a 2001 Dodge on craigslist for $2300. I thought that was cheap but I looked it up on Kelly Blue Book and the price was about right.

edit: It was a 2001, not a 2003 as I previously wrote.

edit 2: I looked it up on Kelly's. High value=$4640 Low value=$3665

Be careful. A 1998 is 13 years old. Don't matter the miles. Take it to a mechanic you can trust & have him check it out, body damage, rust, etc. Then act suspicious around the sales man. I went back to my dealer 4 times last year before I bought my truck. Never returned his calls, this was over 10 days. Price on my 2007 was 24,995. Got it for 18,250.

I traded in my 1998 Chevy Silverado extended cab last may with 154,000 miles on it. All the problems I had with the truck occurred between 50,000 -100,000 miles. Loved the truck and have second guessed trading it for the 2007 Silverado that I bought.

IMO the price they are asking is a bit high. With that said, with proper maintenance, you can easily get another 100,000 miles out of the truck. Have a shop go over it thoroughly before you buy.

I was truck shopping last summer. I wouldn't have paid that much for a truck with than many miles on it.

IMHO you're thinking along the right lines BUT:

that is a lot of miles for a lot of money.

Depending on how ansy you're getting, you can probably find more truck for less money.

Along toward that kind of mileage they all start eating money eventually.

I expect it's a 5.7l engine, the 350 cu in v8 and one of Chevy's best. That is top money but the miles are low. I don't like a 1 piece bed cover. Fabric is a pain and fiberglass limits what you can haul with it. I'd offer $5500 if I wanted it and I'd stick to my guns.

If you pay 7k and decide you want to sell in a month how much you think you'll get back? Not near 7k. Cash is king so, if you've got it, you can get some very good deals.

I will never be without at least one truck. Always buy used.

My experience is no matter what shape the truck is in, I always spend about $1400 on a truck after I purchase it. Not always the same thing, but items like carpet, seats, brakes, hoses, belts, radiator, tires, engine gaskets, you get the idea.

If someone (dealers included) is selling something, they won't spend money on it to make it right. They get it "good enough" and pay to have it detailed. If it looks good it will sell.

That said, my favorite truck is my 33 year old Chevy shortbed with 533,000 miles on it. It has a 350 4 bolt main engine and a turbo 350 tranny, bulletproof! It is my goto truck in bad weather, mud, ice, etc. Always starts, and always gets me home.

I have other trucks, but I like that old Chevy.

Thanks, friends. Since I seem to have rotten luck, and not knowing what could go wrong and when, and be out of pocket when it does, I've decided to start thinking NEW. I'm thinking this type of mew:

New 2011 Sierra 1500 Pickup Truck | Model Overview | GMC

Thanks for your comments and advice.

I think you're on the right track now. All I can say is check around, I've seen some huge discounts and financing deals on trucks at some dealers. Looks like your set on GM so find the GMC or Chevy dealers in your region that sell the most trucks. Around our area you'd have difficulty even finding a 2WD truck on the lot.

Worse piece of junk I've ever owned was a BRAND NEW Bronco II.
Ford couldn't even get parts for it and when they finally did the problem was the same. I owned that thing for a year and had it for 2 months - Ford had it for 10.

No more new cars or trucks for me.
I prefer 2 year or even 3 years old vehicles - The BIG depreciation is over with.
It's an even better deal now - now that you can get a Car Fax - any probs with a 2 or 3 year old truck will most likely have been handled by a dealer and reported.

Gotta agree on getting a truck, don't know how I ever got by without one. Best buy in town will always be a 3 year old, lightly used and well maintained. Let someone else take the big hit on depreciation that is often as much as 50% in the first three years. If you buy from a dealer it should still have the extended warranty but you will probably pay a little more than from a private party. Good hunting! (o;

"Buying used" is good advice...that not everybody can take.

Somebody has to buy new; otherwise, where will the used ones come from?

Bronco II's were pretty sad vehicles. As an example they were at the bottom of the reliability ratings in Consumer Reports. But what does that have with buying new vs used?

Mostly -- You really don't have any idea what you're getting when you buy a new vehicle.

With CarFax and a thorough checkout, BEFORE you buy, you actually do know what you're buying with a used vehicle.

Sure *most* new cars are just wonderful. But a new lemon is a real headache and not as easy to get straightened out as it should be.

How many times will you have to hire a friend to haul something on occasion to cost more than that 20K truck plus tax, registration and insurance and fuel at three bucks a gallon?

Just sayin.

Actually you do have an idea what you're getting when buying a new vehicle. Just educate yourself what vehicles have an excellent, or at least good, reliability record. Going back to your Bronco II era, one could have chosen between say a Chevy Cavalier or Honda Accord. It was apparent then to anyone who researched this choice that the Cavalier would be *far* more problematic. Take Ford for instance. Some of their drivetrain combinations are quite reliable while others are not, in the same vehicle. This information is readily available. It's up to "you" to decide what's important and purchase accordingly.

As far as used? Well, just as when buying new you need to eliminate the problematic models. That used Cavalier will be be a big headache. Carfax only tracks some problems that are recorded in some vehicles. You have no guarantee. When buying used, a check-out will be helpful. How thorough depends on how much time you want to pay the mechanic.

Just me and my wife now, so my little single cab S-10 is perfect for us. 4.3L V-6 5 speed 3:08 rear axle. Gets around 26 mph on the hiway. It is a 2002 I bought in 2004 and it had 25K on it. It now has 120K and I don't think I could function properly W/O a pickup of some sort.
Hope you like yours as much as I do my chevy.

My thinking is, if you're only going to have one vehicle, it ought to be a truck. If can afford to have two vehicles, then you buy a car to go with the truck.

You are making a good point, Iggy, something that has not escaped me. My only vehicle (car) will be 12 years old next month, and although with extremely low milage, its depreciation and potential age problems ahead, my best bet is to buy what I've been wanting (truck) and sell my 46,000 mile car while it's still in good-enough shape (pristine) - I think I can get a lot more than use it as a trade.

Hi, Caj - I have a 1999 German made (Opel) Cadillac Catera, "Platinum" color, 4-door, folding back seats, no marks on it. Owned by a little oldfella, used on trips to church and grocery store, and couple of trips to Atlanta and a few trips to Nashville airport. The odometer reads 46205. Lets take it to email if interested: [email protected]

Bought my 1994 Chevy Silverado Z-71 (ext. cab , short bed stepside) about 3 years ago with 115k on it. Was very well cared for , and the biggest problems came from it sitting idle. The like new tires were dry rotted , as were exhaust system , belts and hoses. It also needed the brakes tended to , but probably the best $4000 I ever spent. 3 years and 15k miles later , it runs like a Timex.

Default '92 Cavalier

Wow, ridewv...., really? ------"Actually you do have an idea what you're getting when buying a new vehicle. It's up to "you" to decide what's important and purchase accordingly."----Sounds good, but my '92 Cavalier has 209,000 miles on it and starts every time in -20 degree temps in Alaska. It also looks great. I have about $2k invested with purchase price, brakes, shocks, struts, tires, stereo, speakers, and the little 2-door bright red cavalier knocks down in the neighborhood of 34 Miles per gallon. Once a year for the last 6 years it gets a power-wash under the hood and you could practically eat of the engine(2.2Litre) now in January. Maybe I just got lucky.........Sprefix

When I bought the Bronco II they JUST CAME OUT. You know where to get a review and reliability estimate on a new model?
Yeah sure - I wouldn't buy one now, but till then Ford trucks (albeit real trucks) were always good to me.

Sprefix, glad you beat the odds with your Cavalier. The 1984 I bought new for our business (I insisted on buying American then) threw a rod in 1990 with 60k+ miles, engine was trashed. Certainly most held up longer than mine did but still they were a pretty poor car. As were Escorts, Tempo's of the time.
At the time of Bronco II's I don't recall *any* Ford product that had anything but a poor reputation. Their full size pick-ups were probably the best vehicles they were making at the time.

Seeing as the last one was made in 1990..and I still own one.

What has a Bronco 2 have to do with trucks.?

I mentioned the Bronco II as my main reason for not buying new vehicles anymore. Not as it being a truck.

I would agree that most new vehicles are just wonderful. But if (or when) you get a bad one the fun has just begun. Nothing like going into debt and making payments on a vehicle that won't run.

Possibly one other reason I don't buy new:
I have NO debt and don't want any

No more new cars or trucks for me.
I prefer 2 year or even 3 years old vehicles - The BIG depreciation is over with.
It's an even better deal now - now that you can get a Car Fax - any probs with a 2 or 3 year old truck will most likely have been handled by a dealer and reported.

BINGO, give the man a cigar.

Just got my new to me 4x4 2005 Chev. Silverado with 32,000 one owner miles extend cab. $16,000 out the door. From a dealer.

Wife and I try to buy 2 or 3 year old cars and trucks and we try to get them from someone that had a lease cause these have to be kept up on maintenece or the lessee has to pay a fee. And the dealer does the maint. Best deals out there cause most have a milage limit like 12,000 miles per year if you go over you have to pay a fee.

My last 4 trucks have all been chev. I still have my old one it's got 192,000 miles and runs like a top. It's a 4x4 ex. cab Silverado also. Paid $17,000 in 2001 for it. I would not take
$ 5,000 for it now.

Keep Deadeye's statement in mind. Good Luck.

Now, if I could only get back to my thread, I have another question. Originally I had a tentative deal in the works for the 1998 GMC, $7000 out the door - a bit high, I was told. What do y'all think if I were to offer $6000 OTD? See pics below. Thanks.

I'd tell them that I want MY mechanic to look it over. Do it. Then come back and offer them 6 OTD and meet them in the middle.... IF the mechanic gives it his blessing.

Nice, good lookin' truck, btw. The clock on my '91 Chevy Cheyenne quit at 220k but she still does the job. Most of the aux stuff has quit however, but it's not my daily driver.

Pete..

Life is too short to not enjoy..IMHO.

Where I live we have a lemon law for new vehicles
Also new vehicles have something called a Warranty .

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warranty

I use these 2 things to get my vehicle fixed..

Sometime I'll tell you about Toyota..

It looks pretty clean in the pictures. Based on excellent condition retail;

If I'm looking right Kelly Blue Book lists this truck with 5.0 @$5,775

(There is no 5.5) 5.7 takes it to $5,940.

NADA "Clean retail" is $6,700

As far as an offer? 2WD in the winter? Depending on what engine it has, I would only want to have $5,800-$5,900 in it and just tell him that's KBB's top price.
If I *really* wanted it and it was in top condition, all services recorded as being done, brakes, tires good, etc. I would go to $6K or even split the difference in NADA and KBB's top price which would be about $6,300.

That looks pretty good in your pictures. If you like it then go for it.6000 ain't bad in these parts for one like that.
If you buy it will it be kept out of the weather? The reason I ask is red and sunshine don't mix well over time.Lots of pigment in red paint and it tends to fade sooner than most colors.

My Apologies..didn't finish the thought..

I have seen a lemon law for Tn.
That helps with the dealer when they get the " I can't fix it " condition.

Tennessee does have a "Lemon Law" for new vehicles, and every State has some protection for those who get "burned" with a used car.

But could you get one in a 1998 GMC pick-up? They were 5.7L V8 and one of GM's best ever. I've owned several and still have a 3/4s of a 5.7L, a 4.3L in a GMC Safari van. I've also owned the 5.3L that GM went to in 2000. I prefer the 5.7 and I got a little better mpg with it. Didn't have the driveshaft clunk in the older ones either.

$6k ain't too bad. That is a sharp truck, Victory red is my favorite, I call it resale red because it's an easy color to sell when the time comes. I owned a 1994 GMC back in 95. It was the first pick up I'd ever seen with factory leather. great soft ride. I'm not a fan of a one piece bed cover but that is a nice one. Appears to be the spray on bed liner. I prefer that compared to a drop in. Looks like deep tread on tires.

Now is the best time to be a buyer so drive a hard bargain. In a few weeks the tax checks start coming in and then spring makes things take off. If gas goes to $4.00 it turns into a $4000 truck or close, but if go juice goes down truck goes up. Have fun, buy a red pick up!
