You may want to do a few searches for Equine Rescue organizations, etc. Hope they all find homes. Sad waste of good horses.

My wife is one of the "horsey set" and she informed me that all of these horses have found homes. Turns out the horsey set has even more active boards than we do! Who knew?

That's great news. Imagine what would happen on this forum if someone had to give away 52 S&W's or they would be sent to be melted down.

Sad to say, but its just a matter of time before horses are back on the butcher shelfs at the market...

This is another case of "unintended consequences". Wife tells me that a bunch of do-gooders got all slaughter of horses in the US stopped a while back so now they are shipped to Mexico or else-where. So instead of horses being slaughtered here under pretty stringent regulations they go to third-world countries where who knows what goes on!
She is a big horse-lover but she says the only reason horses aren't raised for food is they are in-efficient .. turns out cows can grow a couple of thousand pounds on what a horse would just use for maintenanceQ

Correct . Used to be there was always a meat price a horse was worth, and they could be sold at any local livestock sale barn.

In tough economic times (like now), folks who at one time would sell a nag rather than let it starve, now find they can't even give them away.

I like horses, but they are livestock, like cows, goats, chickens, etc. Cows are actually smarter IMHO, you never see a cow eat itself to death if allowed too much feed. They learn their names, and will come when called. Cows also recognize individual humans, not so with horses.

If you watch a horse in a pasture it has it's head down most of the time. Cows will eat and then chew cud. A horse will get as fat as he can unless worked to keep it off and feed controlled.

I'm glad these horses were placed. I hate to see good horses go to slaughter, but there are horses out there that slaughter is the best option for. Another case of an industry being seriously harmed by well-meaning but very misguided people.

Sent the info to one of out female Officers who was on the mounted unit on another P.D, her and the hubby just bought property so they could have horses.

Hope she can save a few.

Free horses aren't difficult to come by. For anyone that has been involved with horses for several years or more, the offer of a free horse several times a year is more common than not.

I have to disagree with you about cows eating themselves to death if allowed too much feed. I've grown up on a farm, and been around cows my entire life, and have had a couple local farmers who have lost cows who have gotten into feed storage such as grain and eaten so much they became bloated and eventually died. My father had told me of an instance where they actually cut into a stomach, to relieve bloating and to save the cows life. I don't dispute you that I think they are smarter than horses, and they are certainly a whole heck less expensive to maintain. Cows will eat pretty much whatever you give them, horses can be pretty finicky about food.

I'm no horse guy but my l'l bro is.

And I guarantee you that his horses can discern the difference between him and me.

I've had horse. Thin little slivers. I did not discern much taste to it. I am definitely more of a hamburger guy though.
