Default Ruger's NM Vaquero

I've gotten the 45 Colt bug pretty bad since lucking into a good looking Marlin Cowboy Competition. After looking at different offerings I initially looked at case hardened offerings and really like those by Uberti and the like - but just prefer Ruger single actions because I know and trust them. For whatever reason the birdshead grip appealed to me so I started hunting for one or a pair in blue. After missing a pair on Gunbroker a few weeks ago I quit looking until I stumbled on these. Trade offer was right...what's a guy to do?

These are the 3.75" variants and I have the original boxes/grips for each. The stags are by Sack Peterson and are quite attractive although not normally something I'd pick out for myself. These are consecutive serial number guns too so that is a plus I would still like a blued pair but that can come down the road. After handling these they aren't going anywhere!

Is it possible to get an unfluted ACP cylinder for one or both of these?

I did not know that Ruger made New Mexico Vaqueros; very nice indeed!

Although I'm not very smart and probably lack imagination, but why unfluted? I've never figured out the reason for it other than maybe personal preference.
BTW, beautiful pair of shootin irons there.

You hit it! Personal Preference is the ONLY reason.
I love the look of unfluted on single action revolvers (think, black powder 1858 Remington) but would probably not go to the expense of having one fit to one of my revolvers.

love the new vaquero, really like the vaquero as well.

two pair of nm 357s one blued one case coloured and a high polish original vaquero in 44mag.
im looking for a 4 5/8 barrel 44 to match my 5 1/2 barrel vaquero with plans to convert to it to a birds head style, for a different take on a "matched" set.
the 44mag isnt offered in the new model unfortunately , id rather have that if i could . the new vaquero is a better designed piece in my opinion-just not as strong as the original

I have the New Vaquero in .357, 4.5 inch barrel, stainless. The standard grip does not fit my hand very well and I've been looking for something better (I have XLg hands). Other than the fit they are excellent guns.

An un-fluted ACP cylinder makes perfect sense, to me. You could tell at a glance WHICH was in the gun.

Ruger's policy used to was that they would NOT sell cylinders. You send in your gun and they would fit one, but they would not sell one as parts. They would also not make your gun a convertible. I wanted a 9mm cylinder for my Security Six. They said they would install one, but would keep the 357 cylinder.

Occasionally an ACP cylinder shows up on the cowboy wire classifieds. Makes sense. If you buy a convertible, 'cause that's what's available, and have no need or desire to shoot ACP, selling it is a good plan. I see one of them pop up, maybe, three times a year.

All are very nice guns, and thank you for that link! I found photos of the gun and a thread on another forum but not any details. That gives me a better idea.

As another poster stated a few posts down, quick recognition of which is which would be a big draw for me. Anything to simplify can help reduce a possible mistake.

I would like to see a new model in 44 special, if nothing else, it would have a lot of potential. Like the idea of two different lengths for the pair as it is something I would like to do eventually myself!

Can't help there as these fit mine just fine

I'm not in a hurry to spend a ton of money on them, but it will be something for me to watch for. I was aware that Ruger was not really helpful with non traditional endeavors and that if I were serious, it would take a good smith.

Got to go shoot them today and I really enjoyed it. These are a real pleasure one handed and tons of fun. One shoots about 4" lower than the other so it took me some playing with - that will eventually need to be addressed but for now I will keep trying different ammos. This was offhand at 20 yards, was able to center the groups towards the end of the string but still need to work on pulling the trigger a little cleaner I think.

Sorry for the not so stellar pictures, but here's mine with .45 colt cylinder(I also have .45 ACP) and recently acquired stags. I will give this one to my grandson someday.

Didn't realize Bill Peterson was making his elk stag stocks for the birdshead NV gripframe. I'm going to have to give him a call today, because my .45 ACP most definitely needs a set.

I have two 45 convertibles and I solved the problem of which cylinder was which. I keep the 45colt in the stainless and the ACP in the blue one.

You don't say! I'm disappointed. Was hoping for a State Specific model.

There is no reason to say NM Vaquero, or New Model Vaquero. ALL Vaqueros are New Model. New Model refers to the "transfer-bar" action, that makes it safe to carry six.

Now, there is a NEW Vaquero, which is a smaller gun than a Vaquero (or Old Vaquero, if you prefer).

But all Vaqueros, whether Vaquero, New Vaquero, Bisley Vaquero or Vaquerito, are New Models.
