Winchester 52B Sporter .22 rifle
Yesterday I looked at a 52B Sporter. A very nice rifle although it had some dings and handling marks and a slight bit of blue loss at the barrel end. It was missing its swivels and sling, but had not been drilled for scope mounts. Still had the Lyman 48F peep sight from the factory. Asking price was $4999 plus tax. Reasonable or out of the park on price?? Thanks!

They made a (1993 reissue) 52 Sporter. The original 52B Sporter (introduced in 1940) is listed for $4,500. in 100% condition in the 32th Blue Book (2011).

that price is way out of line for a gun with extra holes in it. wouldn't worry about the sling, but supergrade swivels are expensive unless repros.

No, it wasn't drilled and tapped. All original except for the missing sling swivels as far as I could tell. Not a perfect gun, but very nice for its age. It had a 46XXX serial number on it so definitely pre-war. It must've been what is called a transition gun since it had the sliding type B safety on the right side of the receiver, but the stock had the notch cut out on the left side for the older wing type flip over safety.

The 52B Sporter was manufactured in 1940 as per Winchester dates of manufacture.

Sounds high to me. I would pay that or a little more for a 52C with all the original parts.
For that B with the missing parts, I wouldn't pay more than $2500.00, and really expect to pay less than that.
