Isn't she cheating? His family will probably sue. Seriously, my prayers go out to her and the officer involved.

Won't be long before the surviving family members will be on TV wailing "Why did they have to kill him?" and other such drivel. He made his choice. Just glad no one else was hurt because of him.

"He was just about to turn his life around."
I'm wondering if the lady dropped to her knees deliberately? Perhaps quick thinking on her part?

They had the shooting of the robber, live on TV, last night. According to reports, he asked one employee to phone the police. He was a 19 year old black male. They said he dropped out of school at 16 and had re-enrolled this past fall as a 19 year old freshman. Sounds like suicide by cop. The news reported that 5 officers were involved in the shooting.

It was a "textbook" outcome, wasn't it?

Bad business. Glad the woman is not injured. Regret the officer had to shoot. Regret that the young man is dead. Everyone does not get a good start in life. Regret that somewhere along the line the young man could not have been turned to a more positive life.

Much better than the usual ratio. It often seems like 1 hit per 10 shots.

Contrary to what some imbeciles believe, armed robbery isn't a property crime, it's a crime against people.
Every time somebody commits an armed robbery, they should expect this to happen, and I certainly hope that it does, either at the hands of the victim or of law enforcement.

Lots of people have "bad starts". Most of them don't become armed robbers.
If you don't want to get shot, the FIRST item on your agenda should be to NOT be an armed robber.

Rooster - " . . . I found myself one pretty spring day in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in need of a road stake and I robbed one the them little high-interest banks there. Thought I was doing a good service. You can't rob a thief, can you? I never robbed no ciitzens. I never taken a man's watch."
Mattie - "It's still stealing."
Rooster - "That was the position they taken in New Mexico. I had to fly for my life. Three fights in one day. Bo was a strong colt then and there was not a horse in the territory could run him in the ground. But I did not appreciate being chased and shot at like a thief. When the posse had thinned down to about seven men I turned Bo around and taken the reins in my teeth and rode right at them boys fireing them two navy sixes I carry on my saddle. I guess they was all married men who loved their familes as they scattered and run for home."
From the book True Grit by Charles Portis

There was no defense offered for the young man who committed the crime. Regret was expressed that some positive intervention was not made when there might have been the possibility of his being helped to live life differently. I have worked with youth and children since 1979 beginning in downtown New Orleans and continuing in churches and communities. It's like teaching a child to swim. You can use methods that will result in practically 100% success (I've never had a child yet who could not be taught to swim). Of course there are those who will say, "Just throw them in! Let them sink or swim! That's how I learned!" So what? I'll take my method. It has a much higher rate of success. I've conducted enough funerals. I'm not interested in methods that only bring grief to all concerned.
Like it or not, no one is born in a vacuum. Like it or not, circumstance/family of origin, etc. are significant in how anyone develops. Criminals are not a majority of the general population. Not surprisingly, the children of well-educated, economically stable, married parents usually do well in life. Children born to disfunctional/broken families are not surprisingly at commonly at risk for and may even be predisposed to failure. Flippant statements on matters of this sort are about as conscionable as similar statements made by those who find themselves overwhelmed by conflict in the face of other significant issues such as the needs/requirements of caring for aging adults, substance abusers (both legal and illegal), the overweight/obese, the homeless, etc.

The video from WTVD sure makes it look like more than one shot hit the sidewalk in front of the robber.
And yes, not the kind of thing you usually see in Cary.
Durham yes, not Cary.

Some of the best people I've ever known came from horrendous and impoverished homes. Some of the worst came from privilege.
If you try to rob somebody, no matter who ELSE'S fault it may be, it's NOT the victim's. They owe you NOTHING... except proper sight alignment, breathing and trigger control.
I don't have a real big reservoir of "compassion". I try to reserve mine for people who have bad things happen to them through little or no fault of their own. I feel sorry for AIDS babies, disabled vets, victims of "honor killings", etc.
I don't have one IOTA of sympathy for armed robbers. An armed robber has decided that he's entitled to whatever he wants, and is furthermore entitled to hurt or kill other people to get it.
If you can't get an honest job, sell drugs. If you can't sell drugs, sell your body. If nobody's buying, steal unattended property. If you're an armed robber it's because you LIKE the idea of terrorizing other people with the threat or use of violence. It gives you POWER that you don't feel that you can acquire by being a decent human being, or even by being a non-violent criminal.
Every profession has its occupational hazards. At least in the civilized parts of this country, getting shot is one of the hazards of being an armed robber. If somebody doesn't like that, they need to reexamine their career choice.

cmort666,
Thank you for taking the trouble to spell it out for those who may not have gotten it the first time around.
