Helping a Friend
He has a 75mm pack howitzer, I believe the nomenclature is M8A1. Yes, it's registered. The recoil mechanism is shot and he's trying to repair it, but is having trouble and lacks information. Some questions:
1. Does anyone know of a depot level maintenance manual for this contraption; in private hands, in a military museum somewhere or in the Adjutant General's library of superceded publications?
2. Does anyone know of some individual or some World War II artillery reenactment outfit that might have some knowledge of the inner workings of this howitzer?
Possibly in the running for the strangest post in the 'lounge' forum.

Ideal for zombies.
I'll look through my collection of manuals and see. I know I have an artillery manual, but i don't thinkmit's specific.

You might contact these guys.
Brashco Specialty Ammo
Lon is a great guy and has been shooting cannons including the 75mm for many years. If he doesn't have what you need, he probably knows where to find it.

Lee, I think the question is: "Can you shoot +P's in it?".

Artillery School
Fort Sill, Oklahoma is the Army Artillery Center. Start with the museum. Also, many installations use the guns for ceremonies (they use one here for Retreat). Contact the museum at Sill-the arms repair depot at Fort Leonard Wood.

My Dad, who retired from Red River Army Depot, once told me that when McNamara became Sec. of Defense, he was big on streamlining the military and getting rid of anything he deemed unecessary or obsolete. the little pack howitzer was one of them. Then a few years later when the Viet Nam conflict was escalating, we were trying to get every one we could.

When I was an ROTC cadet in the mid 1950s, I did my summer camp at Fort Sill. The course was heavy on Forward Observer proceedures. Just before that they had found about 15K rounds of 75 pack ammo in a cave in Okinawa or somewhere. They shipped it to Sill and we shot it up in Forward Observer practice. When it was the turn of my class, the ground was wet from a thunderstorm the night before so almost no dirt was being thrown up upon impact. Those 75 shell strikes were almost impossible to see. Made for 'good training'.
I don't know about bears, but my friend lives less than 100 miles from the Mexican border; a pack 75 might be comforting to have around.

Sorry, I don't have a FM on the pack howitzer. I'll keep my eyes open though.
