I will help raise the average. Turned 86 this month. My guns range from a Police Positive made in 1917 to a 6906. Everyone has a right to their choice but I like wood and metal.

I hit 50 this year. I have some plastic in my safe. This is mainly due to a lot of my time spent teaching and the "New Breed" usually goes this way. I find this is frequently caused by them not having the needed guidance from old guys. I just don't enjoy shooting plastic guns. Gimme my 617 and a brick of .22s and I am set.

Go forth "Old Guys" and show the "New Breed" the error of their ways

But the thread confirms what I thought from my personal observations. The youth is the market for the plastic guns and the older set are the ones buying the real guns.

Now I am thinking that anti gun Hollywood is the reason for the popularity of the newer, high capacity plastic guns. The youth watches more movies than the elder generation.

I recall how Dirty Harry made sales of the .44 mag soar. When was the last movie made that showed a gun other than black plastic?

I think that Mel Gibson / Danney Glover movie with Mel using the Beretta 92 started the "wonder 9" baloney.

I'm 32 and after watching the Dirty Harry movies a few times I now own two 29's and even bought a 629 with the same barrel profile. If I could both find and afford an Auto Mag I would own one of those too. I just watched The Gauntlet and would now love to own a 2.5 inch 66. Then I watched Brannigan and now I want a .38 Special Colt Diamondback. Neither of them were the best of movies but I still like them and the guns used in them.

I think they tried with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in last years "FASTER", when a Ruger 'Alaskan Redhawk' was prominently featured, but The Rock has never quite achieved Clint's status as an action hero. I'm sure sales of the Alaskan probably spiked a bit, but nothing like the old "make my day" 29.

These days in most movies it be mostly a Glock in fo-tay . . .

Age 58,I think if the OP would add a poll you would see this forums average age is around 50.May be one of the reasons for its stability and knowledge base.Lots of real world experience here IMO.

If the OP, who BTW was educated past his level of intelligence, knew how to do a poll, I am certain he would.

I am also certain that some here underestimate their age. According to the CajunLawyer's billing hours, he is likely over 130 yrs of age.

I'm 36, no black plastic guns at this time but I'll be a Glock owner again (issued one for so many years that it's hard to get used to much else).

Only 20% of my guns are semi-automatic.

This is the only real condescending comment I've seen. Most of these guys have their tongues planted firmly in their cheeks when talking about "plastic" guns, or really couldn't care any less than they do.

I’m 62 and I own a Glock, but I have a 5906 and a Mod 10-6 to make up for it. I like the Glock to shoot but I don’t think I would try to collect guns that all look so similar. I really enjoy the look and feel of the S&W revolvers, they can really grow on a person.

63 and own only blue steel and wood. Also prefer revolvers. The only bottom feeder I own is the Colt remake of the 1917 version of the 1911 I have to tell people it's not original. The only thing that gives it away is the serial number. All of the original markings are on it.

53 here and still waiting to peak.

There is nothing I love more than blue steel and fine, oiled American walnut. They go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Old Smiths are like looking at a work of art. The case hardening and fire blue of an old Colt is absolutely hypnotic. Having said that, my daily work gun is a plastic M&P 45. It's what I trust to keep me alive every day. It has never failed and I never worry about scratching it. I have to say that my main hunting gun has become a plastic and stainless Remington mod 7. I used to hunt with a beautiful Winchester mod 70 but Every time I went out in the rain or it got covered with mud on an ATV ride, I found myself feeling bad. Now I get wet, muddy, bloody and what ever else without thinking about it and the 70 has been retired to a place of honor in my collection. I also own a couple of AR's but that’s more because the Government here doesn’t want me to than anything else.

The last one I can recall that led to some sales had to be Quigly Down Under. As for the last movie without polymer, well Public Enemies had some very nice iron, and The Crazies made good use of a Smith 27 with a 3 1/2 barrel. What more can you ask for than to see that onscreen?

I think Oldman's sweeping generalizations are likely more true than not, and I don't read condescension in his remarks. The suggestion that young men are more likely to enthusiastically embrace the future than desperately cling to the past rings true..... and that they're more likely to be out on a date to a movie theatre on a Saturday night than having a BENGAY evening with Turner Classic Movies sounds reasonable too.

Don't take any of this stuff here too seriously....

52 and really enjoying the plastic.... while the 'real guns' hold down the safe.

I'm 34. I love my M&P's, but my favorite firearm is my marlin 336. I love how versatile it is, how it cycles, and the history of the lever action rifle. I know they're cheap and there are a million of them out there, but it's a thing of beauty to me.

Condescending:

Acting in a way that betrays a feeling of patronizing superiority.

Yup. I stand by what I said. How exactly am I being condescending? I certainly do not feel superior? Am I being patronizing?

Condescension is the perfect word to describe what I am trying to describe. I do not think I could find a better substitute. I said what I meant, and I meant what I said.

Unless condescension equates (to you) as a person remarking about the condescension? Wait, so your response would be further condescension if that is what you truly think?

[QUOTE=ChattanoogaPhil;135854184] having a BENGAY evening with Turner Classic Movies sounds reasonable too.

That sounds like a pretty good Friday night to me. Better make it the 8 o'clock movie though. I'll probably be asleep before the end of the 10 o'clock one.

I'm 61, and I own "tools" and "toys". Among the tools, are an M&P45, a Ruger LCR, and a couple of stainless snubbies. The toys are all steel of some kind, with wood or ivory handles. The only thing I will not tolerate is a rifle with a plastic anything. Rifles, preferably bolt action, are to be wooden stocked, and blue steel.

What I think is interesting is the fact there have been 125 posts as I type this, and they all appear to be Men. (If any Ladies posted I apologize, I was skimming them). I'd better not comment any further on that one I guess, so come to your own conclusions.
Anyway, I'm almost 46. I tell people I am a 45 year old Man, who is 17 in his head, who has the attitude of an 85 year old. I.E. I open doors for Ladies, help them on with their coats and call them Ma'am. I'm a dinosaur and darned proud of it. If you saw my gun collection, no further explanation would be necessary.

I am a 30 yr old lady here, and I have a S&W 642 airweight. I like revolvers and hope to add to my collection in the near future. My husband bought me a Huglu shotgun blue/wood over/under for my birthday. He is deployed and is having it shipped from Turkey. I have always preferred revolvers over plastics. They are more appealing to the eye.

Yes! $500 buys S&W's top-of-the-line plastic gun. S&W's top-of-the-line 1911 replica costs considerably more. I see a lot of younger people driving VW's, but the people who get out of a new Mercedes tend to have a few more grey hairs. Young people don't tend to earn or have as much money as older people, so price matters.

I also think comparing a 65-year-old's gun purchases at 25 to the purchases of today's 25-year-old might be apples-and-oranges. Plastic guns are available today; 40 years ago they were a novelty if they existed at all.

I'm not in my 20's or 30's, but my first handgun purchase was an M&P9 FS. I was willing to spend $500, but not more. The gun I got is reliable, accurate, and I like it.

I was whining about something at work one day when I was in my late 30's, sounding like a grumpy old man, when one of my co-workers, who was pushing 60, looks at me and says, "You know what you are? You're a young fogey." Of course, I was dumb enough to tell my wife about it, and still hear it on a regular basis (I'll be 50 next month).

My age is 26 years old. I'm more into the older Smith's. I don't like this newer stuff except for the M&P. Hate warts too... I think it's a PC thing and I'm not a PC person.

Hey guys, I am old and I own a few plastic guns. In my opinion, they look and feel cheap. We all know what a Glock looks like and we surely all know what a stainless 1911 looks like. Put side by side, which will be more attractive?

We know what both a Rhino and a Model 66 looks like. Which is more attractive?

All guns are supposed to work well and most do no matter what they are made of. All I am saying is the older the owner, the more apt they are to appreciate the workmanship and materials of the older guns.

I will also admit that I do not like the new stainless barrel rifles with the plastic stocks. Give me an older walnut monte carlo stock with a blue barrel. Stainless is not black but I do not think it looks good on a rifle and sun will reflect off the barrel in the woods.

what makes you all think this way? All ive read on this thread is how younger people dont know about guns, dont appreciate hard work and detail that went to making guns. This thread has really offended me, even though I know that wasnt the intention.

Why do you feel that way? If I said a younger person was more likely to receive a DUI, would you be offended? It is a fact. An older person will appreciate and care for a finely built car more than a younger person. Guns are no different. Youth see things on tv and in the movies and apply it to their lives. All of us have seen the gangsters on film turning their guns sideways to shoot them. All of us have seen people at firing ranges do such as well but how many of those are older people?

There is nothing to offend in this thread. My youngest daughter is young. She has a good education, does not do drugs or drink, owns her home and a nice new sports car while still single. She has been employed at the same place for seven years and none of that is stereotypical of the youth at large. i would agree that many youth enjoys the looks and quality of an older, quality gun but not the majority of them.

When I was 15, I dreamed of owning a Belgium Auto 5 even though it was over 20 yrs old. I now have one and it is 57 yrs old but outshoots some of the nicer, newer guns of today that I own. It is fact.

I do not see any reason anyone would be offended by this thread and no offense is meant toward any age group. Would you be offended if AARP called and would not allow you membership because of your age? Same thing. I am not offended when someone wants to hire a younger consultant with more electronics.

why do i feel offended? Because someone is telling me that because I am 25 years old I cant grasp the concept or appreciate the hard work and detail that goes into a finer made firearm. I own all types of guns, but nothing beats steel. Just because we are young doesnt mean that we dont know what "real guns" are in your own words. That all young people are influenced by what they see on TV is ridiculous and ridiculous to assume so. There are exceptions to the rule, I thought this thread was just to get an AVG age of the tenants on this wonderful forum not to bash anyone under 50. FWIW my dream gun is a S&W PC 629 with 7.5" barrel. I just cant afford it right now. I guess this thread is screaming out to me "young people dont appreciate hard work" thats all im getting when i read this thread. I work 50-60 hours a week to send my wife through medical school. I have 84 college credit hours that I cant use until she gets done so I can go back and finish. I know and appreciate hard work/craftsmanship. Do I have plastic guns, yes I do. I own a sig 522 because the price of .223 ammo has gotten ridiculous. No hard feelings here I just want some clarification. Maybe its because I live in the mountains of Virginia that I have a different outlook on things than the young men you are accustomed to. This response wasnt directed toward only you oldman no hard feelings I just hate that you think the way you do about us youngsters.

Have you noticed that younger drivers pay higher car insurance rates and older people pay higher health insurance rates?

Things are different between the years of all of us and no offense should be taken. Not all young drivers are bad drivers. Not all older people are unhealthy.

Not all youth are against the older guns or even the newer revolvers, stainless or whatever. But most will buy what they see on tv or in the movies.

Businesses pay huge amounts to get their products shown on film because it sells. Many years ago, Lucky Strike would spend a hundred thousand dollars just to have a pack of their cigarettes shown laying on a table in a movie as a prop.

Go to the city jail and watch the youth being booked. Look at the clothing they wear, their hairstyles and the guns they used in robberies. Standard movie fare. We know those here are not doing such and most youth are not doing such but youth emulates what they see on MTV, movies or tv. Their doing so is why so many want to limit the amount of tv and movie entertainment seen by the youth.

As to your wife being in med school, I spent 12 yrs worth of college money putting my youngest daughter through it and have not regretted it. Prior to that, I put her through 7 yrs of private school and it was money well spent. It paid off. Each of my kids got a good education and they each have great jobs now because of it. You will not regret doing as you are now with your wife. She will not regret the work she is doing to get through med school. But for now it is tough on anyone.

I am 520 months old and I like things that stand the test of time. That is one reason I chose a revolver. I also like new ideas so I chose an alloy frame.

im 25 and still building my 2nd amendment rights i have both so called ugly plastic guns and traditional old man guns. one point i believe has been overlooked is progress. i dont own a gun that i seen in a movie i own guns for their practical uses. as for progress why doesnt everybody drive a 50 year old car? bc the newer ones are more efficient. dont get me wrong who doesnt enjoy seeing a 60 model impala hardtop with the factory 283 rolling down the street but that guy driving it probaly has a 2010 plastic version impala sitting at home to drive everyday. it just seems like the market now is flooded with more guns that have more plastic than metal on them because of cost effiency and in my experience my xdm9 & sr9 both have held up just as good as my old man guns if not better bc instead of 6 shots i got 18. also look at muzzelloaders how man hunters are carrying a flint stone style 54 cal 6 foot long octagon barrel which weighs a ton (which i have) compared to my plastic tc encore with primers and my leupold scope ? bc its more efficient and practical guns have come a long way from what they used to be just like cars and cell phones. me and my dad argue this point all the time but he sure likes shooting my ugly plastic gus too. but i just enjoy shooting that why we buy guns. Guns were made to shoot not look at only. My favorite motto "If its brown its down, and if it flys it dies" who cares what i shoot it with as long as i can eat it after. God Bless America

You forget the power of youthful credit. I have a 29 yr old neighbor I envy and I am on the downside of my 60s.

This neighbor has a respectable job for only a high school education. His home sold for $287,000. He has a new truck, a late model car, a 30 foot ski boat, a 36 ft fifth wheel travel trailer, TWO new full dress Harleys and a drop dead beautiful stay at home wife. I cannot have notes on all that at once but he does. He tells me they just buy on credit and then refinance as the balances pay down.

A baby is not afraid of falling while learning to walk. The same with youth. They buy whatever they want on credit without worrying about the future. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it does not.

I find that young do not care about the cost, only the amount of the monthly notes. My own 30 yr old single daughter is the same. Well educated, her own home and her third new car in the last five years. I was there at the home closing and the last two car purchases. Her concern was not the sticker price or the asking price but rather how much is the monthly payment. She buys to fit a monthly payment. If she wanted a new gun, she would likely take one of mine but if she bought one, the price would not matter to her but just put it on a credit card.

Years ago, I think I looked at prices differently than today. I bought what I could afford. Today I buy what I want but it took yrs to get to a point where I could afford what I want. Many of the youth of today buys what the plastic will allow.

The youth buy homes they cannot afford simply because recent laws say they can. They buy cars they cannot afford because they can. Tv ads are directed to younger buyers trying to entice them to buy. I am still waiting for one of the gun makers to begin advertising on the 6:00pm news. Youth of today are more bold than we were when we were young.

At the risk of repeating something someone may have already said. I don't have time to read 141 posts right now. I think more so than the age factor is that as humans we tend to favor what we were brought up around which does make it age related. I agree the older steel guns are a thing of beauty and if I was rich I would have quite a collection of them. I have a few reasons though for carrying plastic. Lighter weight makes for more comfort when carrying for long lengths of time. I don't have to worry about sweating on it or getting caught in the rain. If it gets scratched I won't feel like I ruined it. If it gets dropped in the water or in the Florida sand in the heat of battle it's a comfort to know I can pick it up and it's still gonna fire. I kinda look at like this: If i'm venturing into unknown elements I'll lock up a Rolex and strap on a Timex. With no offense intended to the Sigma haters this thing can surely take a licking and keep on ticking.

Jswiney9, come on! You know all of us older guys secretly just wish we were still your age!

My experience here is that if you are here pecking away about S&Ws, we really don't care how old you are. I don't have a PC629, but if you ever get to Indiana, let me know. You are welcome to shoot some of my "old guns."

At the same time, all you have to do is check out a couple of other gun boards (other brands) that are seem to be inhabited by mostly younger shooters, and you will see, at least in my opinion, that there is a marked disinterest, even to the point of denigration, in older style guns, revolvers and lever-action rifles, for example, by what appears to be a majority of the younger crowd. I read a bit on those boards from time to time and I assure you, their opinions don't bother me, and I doubt it bothers anyone else here.

You may be in the minority of younger shooters, or you may not. I don't know. Either way, it doesn't matter. If you're interested in S&Ws, you are welcome here.

That's interesting because I find that it is the parents and grandparents of the youth today who have borrowed this nation into the state it is in over the past 30 years while babbling about the cost of servicing the debt being manageable. Parents and grandparents expect their bankrupt entitlement and retirement programs to be funded by the youth... which by the way is becoming more difficult because the parents and grandparents have shipped so many of the jobs for todays youth overseas. Of course the youth should save their money... so it can be devalued by their parents and grandparents printing money in Washington, right? Oh... one more thing.... Went to a 500 meter match this weekend. All the gray haired old timers were using "plastic" stocks.

I'm 22 and just really started getting into wheelguns over the last couple years. I own 17 handguns, 16 of those are metal...the one that isn't is a Calico, because I thought (and still think) that it's "neat". I really do love the older stainless S&W's though. I own 6 S&W revolvers, 5 are pre-mim and pre-lock, while the 6th is a no-lock M442. I can see where the generalization about younger guys not being able to appreciate the attention to detail and finer materials that went into the older guns, but I'm not one of 'those' young guys. I love the looks and feel of my vintage SS guns and am adding a 2" M63 here shortly thanks to a great guy here on this awesome forum. I wish I was around when these guns were still in common use, but they definitely get their share of love from this 22 year old. I had a Glock 19 for a while, but traded it quickly when a mint M60-7 crossed my sights. The plastic guns (Glocks specifically) are great and serve a real purpose in todays world, but like many have stated...they are souless and have no character. I don't plan on stopping my 'accumulation' (obsession?) of the good ol' Smiths anytime soon...and hopefully when I reach some of you other fine gentlemen's age, I'll have a great collection amassed. I want to thank all of you here that share your experience and knowledge with young guys like me that are just now getting to appreciate the wonderful world of vintage S&W's. I really appreciate it -Rob

28 here. I have a mix of both old and new. K frames, a Winchester '94, .22 pumps, and my grandfather's early Remington 11 sit next to ARs, Glocks, and extended tube 870s in the safe. As much as I'd like a nice 4" 19 or 3 1/2" 27 with a carved El Paso rig for the range, my working pistol is a SIG P226R with nightsights and frequently a mounted flashlight, usually in a Kydex holster. My do-all AR sports a mini reddot and will soon have a light of its own. I'll go with functional over nostalgic any time.

I'm 63 next month.

I have owned a couple of plastic guns that came my way.

Over half my revolvers are SA of one taste or another. Colts, Vaqueros, OM Blackhawks (my current passion). I have 12 1911 of different flavors. My oldest auto is an 96 Mauser. I do have one S & W 40 that's new(er)=my bedside gun. Carry gun is a 649 or a Commander.

Most of my rifles are from before WWII (hell, half of them date before WWI). Have had ONE black rifle-traded for a 2nd generation SAA.

'Nuff said!

Looks like a well over 40+ crowd. I'm shootin' 62 and I'm on both sides. Love all my old Iron as well as the "fantastic plastic". Lets just say I'm helping S&W keep the doors open. I own 2/3's of the M&P handgun fleet and over 1/2 the MSR's. Adicted to melonite since 05-06 ? I like shooting the combat comps. with the pups. Keeps me young
