Default Average age here

Anyone have an idea as to the average age of the members here?

I get the idea that the avg age will be well under 40.

I have also noticed the younger the shooter, the more prone to owning a black plastic gun. The older the shooter, the more prone to owning a more conservative traditional gun.

Since I am 65, most of my guns are the traditional designs of old. While owning a few of the standard ugly black guns, I am not one to be on a range shooting some tactical weapon simply for impressions. I was at a range yesterday and noticed what those there (about 15 people) were shooting. The young were shooting Glocks, the older were shooting stainless steel or blued revolvers with a couple exceptions.

Some of the young lawyers I work with do not know the quality features of the older shotguns like the Browning Auto 5 that was made in Belgium and in fact, never heard of them. However they know all about the new scatterguns out there that cost as much as a late model used car.

Do you think age has an effect on the type gun a person buys?

YES, with "old age" comes wisdom. Youth has a lot of ignorance because of inexperience. But that can be overcome with time and guidance from "old folks".

I'm 64 and will not be lured to the dark side. I probably have an equal number of semi-autos and revolvers, but they are all made of metal.

You can not beat the alure of a finely polished & blued S&W revolver. I am adding another one to the collection this week.

I am in my 60's and still have a love affair with blued Model 1911, Smith J, K, & N frames, Triple-Locks, Register Mags, Colt SAA, Pythons, etc

My wife keeps telling me I'm a 12 year old. You don't ever want to tell her she's wrong. So I'm not 50, I'm 12.

This 12 year old likes old blue steel and walnut on his guns, I don't like do plastic on any firearms, unless it's old school Bakelite grips.

I'm 37, and although I dislike plastic guns, my Ruger LCP sure rides nicely in my front pocket. It's my only plastic gun.

Default Tupperware

My 3 evil black rifles each have black anodized aluminum hand guards. Stainless steel or blued steel handguns don't have no tupperware, except maybe the grips.

The social security check still arrives on the third Wednesday, but I ain't old. I'm not new either.

I'm 67 and all my handguns are revolvers dating to the 60's and early 70's, with the exception of a recent 640-1(NL). When I shoot my friends Glock it feels like the toy gun I had as a kid. I can shoot it well, it's reliable and functional, but still......many of the young people I see on the range have never held a revolver, let alone shot one. But that's OK. Times change, as does technology. If I were a new LEO I'd want a pistol with as many rounds as I could carry (back when, we had 6 in the revolver and 12 on the belt, now they can carry 3X than many). I wonder if, 40 years from now, will people hold their Glocks and feel the same way we do about our revolvers? Or are our guns becoming like computers, something to use and discard as they get old and "outdated"?

"Past 55" is as close as I'll commit

A lot of grist for several rabbit trail discussions on this topic; for instance, the current thread on "So Much Negativity".

Now, I've lived long enough to know for a fact and witness first hand many times over that some folks never outgrow enjoying being an Alpha Hotel . . . but >hopefully< most people outgrow prickly anti-social tendencies as they grow older or at least learn to suppress them, common sense notwithstanding, a by-product of age usually being wisdom - if for no other reason the cruel vagaries of experience.

I note with amusement that there seems to be an abundance of folks that feel compelled to contribute to the "comments" sections of the on-line news blurbs out there such as "Yahoo News". For the most part it's a free-for-all and apparently very lightly (if at all) moderated. Some of the most baiting, asinine, juvenile, ignorant comments can be seen in response to most any article, but you can imagine the crescendo that takes place when it gets political or hits on some other hot topic. And I believe I would be safe in assuming that a great majority of the posters are younger people judging by the attitudes, language and content of the comments.

Thus I really found it ironic this morning when I scanned a story about a young man who died near Lake Tahoe performing "extreme skiing stunts" to the tune of doing a back flip off a 40 foot cliff. Apparently, he was somewhat of a celebrity to many of the younger folks. As could be predicted, in the "comments" section there were a few indelicate observations about the wisdom of such undertakings, speculating about the intelligence of such individuals who engage in these "sports". The explosive vitriol and reaction from the younger crowd was immediate and predictably vicious, attacking anyone who disagreed with their view of this "hero" as "old, ancient, out-of-touch" . . . you get the picture. Thus I found it ironic that when gored by their own ox, so to speak, they can't take it very well. They feel well qualified to comment on "adult" things in any news story, political or otherwise, spouting off about things which they have no real experience or understanding of; but when the shoe is on the other foot . . .

When I was a teen in the 60's (that's 1960's for those tempted to comment) there was much made of a "generation gap". I don't think much has changed. When I was that age I was sure I knew more than I was given credit for - most of the time I now see I was wrong in my certainty. In fact, the older I get, the less I'm sure I know.

I figure the average age on this board is a little older, if for no other reason the average internet surfer of a younger age is very likely to become quickly bored here, since his colorful language and immature behavior is not allowed by moderation and those types are rarely responsible enough to have any real knowledge or ownership of firearms, especially something as arcane and old fashioned as revolvers.

The "younger" crowd we do have here is no doubt comprised of many who are of the military or police services and thus have already set themselves apart from the average person of their age and maturity.

Being adamant and set in your ways from being curmudgeonly (i.e. - *^%&& IL ! *@%%## plastic guns !) is just as bad as the opposite, spouting off and denigrating from the impudence of youth those with more knowledge and experience .

I appreciate the opportunity to come here to learn from the "ancient ones" since there's really nothing new under the sun and it's easier to tread an established well worn path than bust your way through the brush on the side of the hill . . . .

I am 54 and I like the lure of a finely blued or stainless handgun, but the last three I purchased were SW99's. I agree.......us older farts like the classics, and the younger generationhave no idea what they are missing out on.

I was camped on the "Greasy Grass" when Custer and Sittin' Bull had that there squabble, and I durn near went over to complain about the noise.
I ain't at all convinced them new caplocks will ever catch on.

I like the old wood and steel guns. I don't have anything against the newer models, but I don't own any of them.
I'm 67

I am 61 and to be quite honest, while I like and collect steel and wood guns of all types I also like many of the new evil black guns as well as plastic pistols, however, there is just no "pride of ownership" attached to many of them. I appreciate what can be done with them the same way that I like Craftsman Hammers, but if you visit my gun room I won't be dragging one out to show you. AS far as age goes ,all that we see both the military and police using are "new" style firearms so it stands to reason that young people will want what they see much the same as us older guys did. I know I couldn't wait to get an M1 Rifle and an M1 Carbine as well as a Blue Steel S&W Revolver and 45 Gov't. We truly are shaped by what we see and read about.

Personally, I believe age equates to experience and the lack of experience adversely affects those lacking it.
Unfortunately, the actions of those lacking experience often adversely effects those of us having it.

I once justified my reasoning for hiring a guy that received his BMET training in the military and had 5 years of experience over a guy fresh out of college with a BSEE by stating the college grad lacked "the expensive errors in judgment known as experience". From that point on, HR didn't try to dictate my selection criteria or process.

If more than 30 characters were allowed, my sig line would read: "Age and Treachery will always overcome Youth and Skill"

I just turned 68, so other than stocks or grips, all my guns are all metal of some type or other, mostly ferrous.

I must confess though, I used to own a XD-45 and PT-24/7, but I gave those to my daughter. Not because they were plastic, rather because they were bottom feeders and I can no longer rack the slides reliably, or at least not quickly and/or safely enough for HD/SD.

Bottom line: I think plastic guns have their place and purpose, but none meet my purpose, so none are at my place.

Started this hobby later in life than most (like Jack Benny, have celebrated many 39th birthdays) first shooting a Model 10 and my left thumb also gets in the way when using semi's, so 10 or 11 revolvers later, all but one not a Smith, I am pretty much set in my ways.

Plastic, wood and steel... Revolver, bolt and auto... Blonde, brunette and redhead.... 52 and not limiting my 'experiences' due to old age

I'm 45 and tactical minded given my profession but love Old West guns, WWI, & WWII. Only have one engraved Glock and that was given to me by my oldest son last year when we were both home on leave from down range (he got my 29-2). While I'm issued both a M9 and M4A1, I still manage to carry a M1911A1, National Match M14 and a M79 (did also mount a M1919A6 on my Humvee but .30 M2 linked is hard to come by now)

69 here and, IIRC, we did a poll a couple of years ago and unless the demographic has changed drastically, the average age was in the late 40's, early 50's.
(There's a lot of us "old" goats to offset the young pups.)

I'm 57, and my favorites are the fine old blue and walnut of yesteryear. I'm not going to be closed minded about technology, closed minded= foolish. I don't like DAO or IL guns, but I like my heavy barreled Bushmaster. My latest gun is a stainless Savage Model 12, Low Profile Varmiter,in .223, with brown laminated stock. I've got a silver Weaver T36 to put on it. This is going to be fun.

I'm 57 and I like blued steel and walnut guns. An occasional stainless for carry, but have no want of black guns, not that I disapprove of them, I just do not like them. I like the traditional calibers and traditional guns - AND yes I know I am a dinosaur!

31, and owner of a "plastic" M&P 45C, M&P 15A, and a Model 37 Ithaca 12 Gauge.

I do like the look and feel of a old revolver, but for my practical use for a concealed carry, I choose to buy a "plastic" gun. I'm not at the point in my life where i have enough disposable income to collect many more firearms, but if i did, i would very much like to own some of the nice s&w revolvers of past generations.

I would like to say that some of the comments here are very interesting. I would say the avg age is closer to 50, and a previous comment is correct in that most of the younger crowd (myself included) are of the M&P background. And in most cases, much like mine, i think we "younger" guys tend to buy the "plastic" guns for the simple fact that we like to own the weapons we use on duty and become more proficient on our own time.

On another note...i know that when you use the term "plastic" you use it in a negative way, but i'd be careful with that. In some cases you may be painting yourselfs in a corner, and continuing the segregation of gun owners. It sounds a lot like you are turning your nose up at us younger guys. Most of us have thick skin, and can brush off comments like that, but you may be turning others away at the same time.

If you look at the average age (here and at your local club) you may notice something startling. The younger crowd is getting smaller. What is going to happen when the younger generation takes your place, are your guns going to go with you, or have you passed on the knowledge and appreciation that goes with it in order for those types of guns to stand the test of time?

I'll get off my soapbox now...hopefully this makes sense, and i provoked some good thoughts.

V/r
Brian

I forgot to add my preferences in guns......
I like guns that are older than I am and I was born in 1941.
I currently have around 3 dozen, mostly handguns.
My four "youngsters" are a M1 Garand (which I can be forgiven). A Chinese TT Olympia (which is a copy of the pre-war Walther Olympia so it almost qualifies). A Benelli MP95e .22 Bullseye gun (because it shoots so well in league.) And finally, a H&K USP .40, which, as far as I'm concerned, is a piece of ****. (I only have it because I bought it from my son when he was out of work. He has a year to redeem it or it's gone.)
5 or 6 years ago I picked up an Armalite AR15 just to see what all the hoopla was about. I decided I'd rather shoot my M1, so the AR is long gone.

Navy96, Brian , I hope you do not take offense at us older farts using the term plastic. It is merely an easy way of lumping alot of modern style guns together. I actually own quite a few myself. Now, if you must know, On this forum you can own plastic pistols and not be made fun of {we that own pony pistols and revolvers keep quiet about them out of respect to the other members however} and will always be welcome. All my best, Joe.

30 here, and don't have any polymer firearms in my safe, not for function, as I have shot a couple M&P's, Sigma, Sig, and cause I was shamed into it a Glock. Just find all stainless steel more appealing.

I have been carrying my Medicare card for awhile. I also favor rust over plastic!

Recently turned 65. The only plastic in my gun safe is my 15-22.... I've owned Glock and M&P pistols, just like guns with hammers, made out of metal. Call me old fashioned....

I'll be 65 in a few months....just waitin' for my Medicare card. No plastic guns here...just a bunch of 1898-1945 vintage stuff. If it ain't older than I am, I probably don't want it.

Well I am 59 here. Almost didn't make it a few days ago,had a few stents put in 2 arteries. As I left the house that night I had to pull my mdl 37 and speed loader out of my jacket.
Only thing plastic around here is the stock on my Rem mdl 597 22cal.

Even the stents are stainless.

I think us about 70 year old guys were raised with the old classics. We experianced the cheaping of guns with cheaper wood, and then the plastic was pushed. The manufactor short cuts were obvious. Now the action movies show the gangsta`s shooting their plastic pistols sideways over their heads like a matador going for the final coup de grass. Also the new movie tactic`s of spraying countless rounds instead of a well aimed single round in real life. We associate the stupid tatics with the plastic black guns that we have no use for outside of a mass military situation not likely in this country.
I have owned a colt AR 15, mini 14, etc. I saw no need for them in my life and sold or traded them for other stuff. I carried and qualified with revolvers on my guard jobs for over 35 years and feel compitant with them. I own or have owned colt 1911`s, browning hi powers, smith 39`s, walther, radom, luger etc. Never a glock or plastic.
I did own a remington nylon 66 once.
Us old boys were brought up on winchester 62`s, marlin mountie`s, ruger single six`s, and pump shotguns, winchester 94`s etc.
Mossburgs, marlins etc were considered "christmass tree" guns when I was a boy.
Times change. Cop`s used to wear aviator glass`s, mustachs. Now they shave their heads and wear those space looking glass`s. You gotta have that "preacha roll" of fat on the back of your head too!
How did we ever get by without all that tatical stuff?

39 and not a single plastic gun in my inventory. I've collected early post war S&W "Pre" Models since I was in my twenties. In my 30's I moved along to earlier Colt's.

Well, a couple have owned up to it - I am a curmudgeon about a lot of things and often decry a lot of what I perceive is being lost to our heritage in today's "culture".

But when I use the term "plastic" to describe a gun I'm using the term literally, in the traditionalist terms. A "wooden" gun is a toy I had when I was a kid - it looked like an old muzzle loader. A "steel" gun has a wood stock or grips and a "plastic" gun has a polymer frame. That's just how I think about them. No judgmental inferences. Now, when I am joking, I refer to my Glock 17 (yes, had it for years) as my "Tupperware" gun. I like it because it works, and it was primarily bought to participate in night matches and was outfitted with tritium sites from the get-go. But for carry purposes, I find a Sig 239 or a Browning HP fills my preference/needs for 9mm better. I've tried other "plastic" guns and let them go for other reasons besides the material they were manufactured from. I decided I didn't like the Springer SD's because, to me, the bore axis is too high and not comfortable to me or conducive to me doing my best shooting. I had two and traded them off. I've owned 5 Glocks of different calibers and traded them all off except the 17, mostly because I practice "Mexican" carry more than anything else and I don't recommend doing that with a Glock.

By the time the S&W M&P semis came on the scene, my stable of semi-autos was full up and though I like the way they feel, I saw no need to buy one since I didn't have a niche to fill. But it wasn't because they were plastic guns. The Sigma style guns . . . well, that's another story.

I just appreciate the artistry and workmanship of a fine "steel" gun with wood appointments; a "plastic" gun to me is a working tool.

I am 77 and do not own any plastic guns of any kind, don't own any black ones of any kind either, but see nothing wrong with those who do. All of mine are blued or stainless.

I'm just a baby on this site, 39. I have never had a dishwasher safe gun. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to guns, no plastic pistols and my rifles all wear wood. There is just a better feel to a wood rifle stock.

^66 here in April. Own one glock and I like it. This year my favorite is my nickel 34 snub. Sold all other plastic and have a 36 blue airweight J frame this will be the wife's if I can get her well and taught how to handle the little 36. Her mother gave me the fathers old pre 10 and wife liked it. To large for her to carry. K frames seem to fit my hands better these days. authur-itus has played heck with both hands.

Im 24. I appreciate the spectrum of age range here, over the years a lot has changed but some stuff has stayed the same. It is nice to get opinions from people who have had various types of training and experience throughout the years. Also it is nice comparing new schoold to old school tactics and weaponry/equipment.

Default Age is Nothing but a Number

I'm 55 and if it makes loud noises and spits lead at high velocity I like it.
Black and ugly, polished blue steel and walnut, matte silver, I don't care as long as it is accurate.

I started out at "0", I'm now "63" so I guess my average age is 31 1/2.

Don't sound so bad when I say it that way.

Just turned 67. If the younger set wants/likes the plastic guns, more power to them. I've never owned one, nor ever will. I prefer metal/wood only. Sure, the plastic ones are probably more accurate, and trouble free, but they just don't have any personality. I can take any of my metal/wood guns and put them on a table with 100 others like them, and pick out mine immediately. They all have a story to tell, and personality. I doubt that you could do the same with a plastic one. I will never never fault anyone for their choice of firearm.

Badda bing, badda bam, badda boom! Works for me, Kraig.

No plastic here, either. Body parts are one thing, but guns?

I'm 56 & my accumulation runs from a '52 S&W blued wheelgun to a Parkerized 1911 to a Ruger KP90 bottom feeder.

While I don't much care for plastic guns I own a Ruger 22/45 and the wife has a SIG Mosquito. She doesn't know it yet but she also has a SIG SP2022 she was liking so much down at the LGS. Our anniversary is the tenth.

My preference is for old skool blued steel, but admire stainless and reallize plastic has it's place, tho I try to keep the polymer in my safe to a minimum.

You will never, ever see me totin' a long gun with a vertical foregrip tho, and it's highly unlikely you'll ever see me with a handgun that doesn't have a hammer.
