Best "Doom & Gloom" books...
I just finished the book "One Second After" about EMP attack on our country...Very Creepy, no deaths initially from the attack, but 80% of our population gone within a year...caused by total electronic failure, loss of refrigeration, disease, & mayhem. Wow are we vulnerable right now!

I didn't consider "One Second After" to be some much as a doom and gloom book, but more of a are-you-prepared for a meltdown of society.
Another good book is "Alas Babylon". Writen during the Cold War, I still see if from time to time in paperbook in the book stores.

Another Place To Die, by Sam North
Quote:
Another Place to Die is a vivid account of individuals caught up in a worldwide flu pandemic. Set in Vancouver, Canada, this is a terrifying and realistic scenario of people facing the horror of a killer virus that will kill millions. Everything your Government said would protect you is a lie. Make a choice. Escape to a safe place or tough it out. As martial law is declared and soldiers have orders to shoot anyone breaking curfew, normal life begins to break down. Mass burial pits are being dug. Everyone is afraid of each other. The Pandemic is coming. Where will you go? Where exactly is safe? Another Place To Die is an essential survival manual everyone should read.

[QUOTE=OCD1;135857503]On the Beach, the movie was good also
But only the original movie with Fred Astair.
"Fail Safe" is good too. Can't beat those late '50s early '60s Cold War flicks.

Amen that.
Along the same lines as "On the Beach" I read one once called "The Last Ship" by William Brinkley. A US Frigate, and a Soviet nuclear submarine in a post atomic war world. Long out of print I'm sure.
Another that I really liked since I was a kid, is not really an end of the world story, but more of a brave new one, was "Tunnel in the Sky" by Robert Heinlein. A group of young people on a "survial mission" to a distant planet are left stranded there and have to start a new civilization from scratch. Years after I read it, my kids loved it, and so did my wife. Good read.

For those who go for that type of stuff as fantasy/escapism I suppose it makes interesting and entertaining (?) reading, - in reality we are all just a moment away from calamity of man made or natural apocalypse at any given time.
But Mel Tappan, who has been dead for over 30 years by the way, made a living and gained notoriety for advocating being prepared for "doomsday" and was convinced it was upon us at any given moment. He wrote books on the subject, magazine articles, ran a 'survival' business, gave seminars, and oh, did I mention he's been dead for over 30 years ?
Don't get me wrong, just like fire and auto insurance, there are a few common sense things folks can/should do to prepare themselves for unexpected emergencies, but you can waste a lot of your substance and miss out on a lot of life preparing for "doomsday". In reality, I find survival under apocalyptic upheaval a bleak and distant prospect - you'll either find a way to survive or you won't. You can't stockpile enough food, water, medicine, fuel, ammunition, yadda, yadda, yadda, to ensure your survival and those you love for a truly extended period. Even if those who remain who didn't stockpile all that stuff manage to let you keep yours. But we all die of something eventually. I'm not a defeatist and I'm pretty sure I would fight and scrap and struggle to the best of my ability and means to preserve the things I find precious, but the poster who referred to the Book was on the only sure path I know of. YMMV.
I don't know where Mel Tappan is spending eternity. One would hope he spent just a fraction of the time and effort he expended on surviving a theoretical holocaust in making preparation for the certainty of eventual death and eternity. Our lives are but a vapor, we're told - here one moment and gone/evaporated the next. Our society/culture tends to act as if we don't have to face that, even in the face of it happening daily around us. That's a fool's bet against the house - and the house never loses.

I'd forgotten about "The Last Ship". I have a hardback copy, last time I read it Reagan was President.

"The Overton Window," by Glenn Beck is pretty good. Whether or not it's doom and gloom depends on which side you're on. And I've always liked "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury.

"Vandenberg" by Oliver Lange is a good one.
Dated now but still worth the read.
One of the first paperbacks I bought at the bookstore
at the college I eventually graduated from.
Also like the Rawles books I've read.

War Day, by Jim Kunnetka and Whitley Strieber. Another EMP situation brought about by a limited nuclear war--limited by the fact that EMP has taken out much of the nuclear and other weaponry early in the initial attacks. Parts of this country and Russia left devastated and others untouched. Raises questions of health care triage according to radiation exposure, etc.
Older book but quite interesting.

Patriots. I found the economic collapse of the US followed by the rest of the world to be as plausible and probably more imminent than EMP.
World War Z was a good read.

The Road, Cormac McCarthy. The book, definitely NOT the movie.
Also, it features a S&W revolver...with only two shots left in it.
They say that people are drawn to these doomsday/SHTF scenarios by the human desire to 'start over'.

Lights Out by David Crawford is about an emp attack and we'll written. Couldn't measure if there was more doom than gloom but if you liked One Second After you will like this one.

Chuckle. Forstchen, spelling?, is a good friend of Newt Gingrich. He likely knows perfectly well that the United States has a fully functional defense against high altitude EMPs. Though it makes good money selling the idea, amd doesn't hurt to make countries like North Korea and Iran think it viable.
(HAARP, among other things it does, is our EMP shield.)
"The Last Ship" became a series on TNT, now about pandemic rather than a nuclear war.
If you have a kindle, or even the app, simply put "zombies" in as a search topic on Amazon. Thousands of books will come up and at any given time several hundred are likely to be free.
Rawles....years ago I called him out on selling expired body armor for more than new vests in conjunction with an associate of his. They were peddling a story alongside of armor being banned. This was pre Y2K. He was a proponent of that too if memory serves.
His book on economic collapse was originally supposed to happen in the early/mid 90s.
To Max Brooks credit, at least he doesn't make a living selling dubious items, and instead simply speaks out on a certain level of preparedness being a good thing.
Whitley Streiber went on to predict, wrongly, a real apocalypse many times. He said the information came from the aliens who had been abducting him.
My favorite though is Ed Dames and his shameless pandering of "Killshot" seminars.

Surprised.......
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned 1984 by George Orwell. The year 1984 came and went and people said Orwell was wrong. I think he was right, it just took 20 years longer than he predicted.
"A Clockwork Orange' is a pretty terrible view of the future.
"Farenheit 451" isn't too optimistic either.

I spent a week in NC at a resort that is in the town where EMP's epicenter was.
Having just read the book I was hoping it was not as Yogi Berra said about being deja vu all over again.

I was scrolling throught this again and remembered another one.
"Arc Light" by Eric L. Harry.
As I remember the blurb on the back of the book saying, "It starts with a nuclear exchange...then the action heats up."
Starts with a limited nuclear exchange between the US and Russia, then evolves into a more conventional war. I remember it was a 'can't put down" book.

I guess Harlan Ellison's A boy and his Dog would fit. Also a pretty entertaining movie featuring a very young Don Johnson.

This is a genre I’ve enjoyed ever since my mother gave me a paperback copy of ‘Alas Babylon’ when I was 14. Many of my favorites have already been mentioned. I’ve also recently discovered the ‘World Made by Hand’ trilogy by James Howard Kunstler and enjoyed those books very much.

There's this brand new writer on the market, and I recently read one of his books. It's called "The Time Machine", and I think his name was H.G. something. I hear he has a couple other good sci fi books out.......

I have read some of his works. He makes some good points and had great action scenes, but the writing and dialog leaves much to be desired. And what's up with the comma before his last name?

I think you mean :"The Mist".
The Strain (book, not the movie), the sequels are "OK"
The Stand (already mentioned)
BTW: The Biblical book is "Revelation" (of John), NOT "Revelations".

Last year I downloaded these books for reading during my vacation and found them to be in the main scary plausible. Bracken posits that the Federal government tries to confiscate all semi auto firearms and finding that hard to do, performs several false flag operations to give widespread support to their efforts. things go south from there with a corrupt president that wants to give the SW US back to Mexico, economic chaos, ect.
I enjoyed them. The lesson is really about forming a community as one person in a SHTF time does not have the ability to survive.

I got hooked on A.American's "Home" series and am anxiously awaiting the last one....due at the end of the month.

Matt Bracken's "Enemies" trilogy has been mentioned already; it's awesome! His "Castigo Bay" is good too.
