Is a Jeep a Peep?
I'm reading Patton's, War As I Knew It, and he repeatedly refers to his vehicle as a "peep", not a jeep.
What is a peep? It can't be a misprint; he used it too many times.
Thanks,

Any truth to the story I heard decades ago that Jeep is short for GP = General Purpose? And Peep short for PP = Personal Purpose?

My father was in an armored cav unit prior to, and during WWII. His unit was one of the first to get jeeps, on a test and evaluate basis.
They called them Peeps, after a comic charactor. They were made by Bantam, before that company was forced out by big detroit.
As far as I know, my father always called the Dodge command car....the Dodge command car.

David-
I'd heard that GP story, too, but the research that I've done
this past week said that it isn't so, and that there was even a cartoon character in the 1930's called a Jeep. And some ineffective soldiers were dubbed Jeeps by the others.
Patton was an Armor man, so that probably explains the Peep name, based on what's been posted here.

The Dodge command car looks like the predecessor of the "Power Wagon" of the late 40's and 50's.
We also had a 3/4 ton version with a water tank in it that we used as a rural fire truck for fighting prairie fires.
We also had a Dodge Weapons carrier of Korean War vintage that was six wheel drive. It came with chains that could be hooked together and almost made it a half track.

...Coast Guard had one of the first Jeeps to run around on the beach with, and of course managed to stick it in the sand. Since I was a bit of a Jeep nut as a kid, he used to enjoy telling the story. Apparently they got it pushrd out before the tide came in. He also drove a Jeep a lot in the ETO so his enthusiasm for four wheeling was minimal in later years.
...This one-handed typing gets a bit erratic at times. Sorry 'bout that.

Good grief! I think I'm sorry that I asked.

The Chinese knock offs were called "cheaps".
The "weeps" were made by Saab.

The original of what has come to be called the Jeep. was originally designed by American Bantam. It wasn't a matter of being forced out of anything, Bantam could not produce the volume of vehicles required by the government during WWII and contracts were awarded to other companies to produce so required numbers could be obtained.
This is exactly the same situation as many other other products. Many aircraft were produced by different manufacturers, as were firearms and ancilary items like leather goods.
Regardless of which vehicle was really the Jeep, the name is supposed to have originated with a character in the "Popeye" comics, a peculiar little animal which was named "Eugene the Jeep". The character predates the military use of the word "Jeep" to popularly describe either the American Bantam vehicle, or the Dodge "Command Car".

The original Jeep was a character in the Popeye cartoons. He was not only magical, but very strange looking.
I always understood the name Jeep was given to the vehicle because the soldiers thought it looked stranges. Compared to a nine-passenger Packard, it was.

Funny/odd names given things from back then, like "bazooka". Where did that come from?

The "bazooka" was an experimental brass in Artie Shaw's band.

reply to ttex about jeep vs peep army vehicles
The early name for a jeep was a peep and the jeep was listed as the 1/2 ton dodge command car. Pictures of both are located in the October 1941 Motor Annual Magazine.

That's terrible! Even worse than Sip's original!
A radio personality--musician and sort-of comedian--named Bob Burns played a weird instrument made out of pipe and other junk that he called a bazooka. I've read somewhere that this was the origin of the name for the rocket launcher.
I remember Burns, and the strange sound of the instrument.

As said above, The Jeep from Popeye, was a magical animal and could go anywhere. I saw photos of one of the Test Jeeps, going through the test and development stage, and it had a picture of Eugine the Jeep painted on it. Maybe the testing troops saw the similarity and the name stuck?

I saw that on the Military channel (AKA "The Hitler channel") the other night. Once in a while they do get something right. Mostly they spend their time ID'ing British ships and troops as US. Italians as Germans or Russian etc.
As for the jeep I really think G.P. makes the most sense. Since I think they were called a "truck 1/4 ton general purpose."

My Dad was with the Army Corps of engineers when they were first testing the Jeep. He told me that jeep was for g. p. or general purpose. Eugene the Jeep from Popeye was first. Is the name just a coincidence?
I also read that the Jeep was named for Eugene the Jeep but since my Dad was there, I'll believe his version.

The name may have come from 'bazuin', a Dutch word for
'trumpet'.
