Angry Ignorant irresponsible dog owners..a rant

Driving down a neighborhood street this morning in the golf cart when I see this woman, about my age, walking a very large black dog. Probably some lab in there and he must have weighed 90 lbs. Hey, when you gotta go, you gotta go and so the dog did, right at the curb in front of someones home. As I drive by I see the lady head up the street leaving the large steaming pile of poo right where Fido dropped it. I turned around and drove back to Ms dump and run and told her she needed to go back and clean it up. "I don't have a bag" was her defense. I asked her why she was walking the dog without one? No response. I suggested that if she would just knock on the door of the house where she left it I am sure they would be happy to give her a bag. "I'm not going to do that".

I drove away shaking my head. Fortunately we live near by, I got a bag, returned, and cleaned it up. We are responsible dog owners and always clean up after our Greyhound, and believe me they **** a lot. We can't take our dog to many parks and on most trails because of Bozo's like this idiot. If I knew where she lived you can guess where I would have left it...without the bag. (o; OK, rant off for now...

I agree, that is uncalled for.
But my question to you is, are golf carts legal to be driven on the street?, because they are NOT in my area.

If you couldn't make a golf cart street-legal in AZ, you'd de-mobilize a significant portion of the residents and/or force them to move elsewhere, like maybe Florida. The golf carts are harder to see, but do nowhere near as much damage as a four-door Buick when they careen out of control...

I understand completely, but they are no more legal than a young kid on an off road dirt bike riding up the street, and I KNOW the cops are after them.

Guilty!I have a big dog and like the man said' when you gotta go...'.
I have a bag in my pocket whenever we go anywhere.
On the other hand, the little dope likes to run out back and **** on the neighbor's back section. I have a scooper for those, but we have had a little ice age here this winter, and so I have not been diligent as I would like on account snow. Be assured that my job is to go around with the scooper as soon as the area is accessible. I don't want to leave dog remnant around, anymore than anyone wants to look at it or worse, step in it.

They are also irresponsible in training Bozo as well. I bet he was taking her for a walk rather than the other way around. Probably can barely control him under the best of circumstances.

I like the idea of returning the poop to her front porch.. If that happened a couple of times, I bet she would get the message.

Some dogs though... My last dog, a rescue Borzoi, went to the end of the fenced in yard, went behind the pine tree and deposited. Some dogs just "get it" . Others like their owners remain clueless their whole life.

I live on a corner. All the folks down the side street walk their dogs up to my yard for them to do their work. I guess I should be a better sport about it. But I'm not. For years I discovered and followed a fun practice.

Prior to cutting my lawn, I walked my sidewalk with my "dog "shoot" shovel" And I was very good at scooping it up and slinging it...right out in the roadway where all those folks had to drive. They drove over it and mashed it to a smelly pulp, working it into their tire treads and slinging it all over their inner fenders and on occasion all over the outsides of their cars. (when they turned the corner, the outside would sling it all over. )

My wife didn't like it. I didn't care. The same culprits who allowed fido to dump on my grass had a very good chance of taking it down the road.

On the more interesting side, the local city commission (the equivalent of a city council) passed an ordinance requiring anyone walking their dog to have a device for the containment and removal of dog excrement. Interesting ordinance. One of my friends was a local judge when it passed. He was what is known here as a District Court judge, hearing minor stuff. So I asked him about ordinance construction and how a proper judge would construe it. He smiled (he did that a lot.) His interpretation was, if you had the device, you were golden. Device could be a commercial scoop, any shovel, or even just a set of gloves. And equally good was a plastic grocery store bag.

Nothing in the ordinance required the dog owner to use the device, it just required anyone walking their dog to have such a device along with them. Now, maybe 15 or so years later, I don't think anyone has been arrested, cited, charged or prosecuted for the heinous offense. But our fine city fathers (and mothers) felt it necessary to spend city funds passing it.

We live in an "Active Adult Community" which translates to old fart city(at least one member of the household must be 55). (o; Actually there are roughly 5,000 homes in our community and the streets are private. Anywhere there is a county maintained (public), road in our community, and there are two that provide outside access, there are adjacent private concrete golf cart/bicycle/walking paths. For a golf cart to be legal on any public road in Arizona it must have seat belts, turn signals, brake lights, registration and insurance. The paths enable "Illegal" carts to get around the community legally.

In our community the private streets have no such restrictions. My cart, a 1998 Club Car I picked up 4 years ago for $2K, has no title/registration, insurance, seat belts or turn signals but it runs like a Swiss clock. My bride drives it far more than I do and every time it is out of the garage her car or my truck isn't. A new cart, moderately equipped run around $8K+ which is why I have a 13 year old beater.

Guilty.

I have an 80lb chocolate lab. I finally learned to take 3 bags if we are going more than a few blocks. His nickname is "pooper" for a good reason! Don't know how many times I detoured on the way to work in the car to pick up a "surprise" he left on our morning walks before it sank in I needed plenty of extra bags and a sanitary way to carry them to a garbage can.

I am stuck living in an apartment till my house sells. Its disgusting how little clean up people bother with. And the property managers have gone out of their way to put baggy dispensers all over the place. I actually feel more pity for the dogs than the displeasure of having their poop around.

Default Two large breeds.

I have a good size yard with a fence. Some times I forget to look where I'm stepping.I guess thats my problem and my lawn guys.

What was the saying "Don't .... in your own front yard"? don't mean what it used to.

i love dogs but dog owners are another animal. there have been several times over the years when i stepped in doggy doo left by dog walkers while i mowed the lawn. i've verbally stopped a few that i saw before their dogs got started and one guy was so upset that he now crosses over to the other side of the street before he gets to my yard. just the way i like it

over the past 20 some years i've had 3 mastiffs, all very large dogs far north of a hundred pounds. they never dumped anywhere other than my fenced in backyard.

I feel the same way about those who want to save the whales, ban cigarette smoke, nuclear power and coal mines . . . IF they are hypocrites enough to not extend the same "make the environment safe/clean for everyone" to idiots who throw their fast food trash out the window and let their jumbo dogs take a dump wherever they feel like it without cleaning it up.

The old proverb goes 'if everyone swept up the walk in front of his house, the whole world would be a cleaner place' or something to that effect.

I think the OP did the right thing - the reason people indulge in selfish, anti-social, think-of-no-one-but-themselves behavior in public places is that they are used to no one in society having the stones to stand up and say to them that what they are doing isn't right and hold them accountable.

Some of nastiest specimens I've ever encountered that were severely challenged by the concept of personal hygiene were some folks that would have you believe their passion was making the planet/environment safe and clean for everyone. They would have done well to start cleaning up their personal space and themselves . . . .

Probably. I don't know what your problem with golf carts is but then I really don't care. With gas prices headed north we'll use the cart instead of the truck or car every chance we get. As far as getting another hobby I was coming home from playing golf, shot a smooth 79. I ride my bicycle on a regular basis, go to the gym to work out and then swim 1,000 meters 3 times a week, shoot S &W's and a few others, do lots of camping and I'm a pretty serious cook. No, no time for any more hobbies. The only problem with being retired (after working for 40 years), is you never get a day off. (o;

Not my yard? Yes, but definitely my community and I care about where I live. Maybe you enjoy seeing a large steaming pile of poo left for someone else to clean up but I don't. Every year I see more and more areas such as parks, beaches and trails closed to dogs and responsible dog owners like myself just because of idiots like this gal. I did her a favor, hopefully embarrassed her enough that she won't do it again. Had the local Patrol seen her do it the fine is $50 first offense.

We bought a house in a new development. They quit building for a while and there is nothing but empty lots across the road. So the neighbors with two dogs like to cross the road and leave the remains to bake in the Florida sun and humidity. Want to open the windows and turn on some fans to beat the A/C bill. Better have a good gag reflex. Other than going to jail I don’t know what keeps me from losing my mind and using a shovel to sling it back at their house. I can’t believe how inconsiderate people can be for one another. They banned smoking in restaurants in Florida a few years back. I get it; the smokers like to puff one right after a good meal. I’d just like to eat my over priced meal and not feel like I’m suddenly in a pool hall. What doesn’t bother one person makes someone else nuts. But when people get completely obnoxious about it I don’t see how you are supposed to feel. The complete indifference people can have to what they don’t see is a big deal is funny sometimes.

Both of my dogs have one of these clipped to their leads. Bags are pricey so I'm sure the gals at WalMart are a bit puzzled that I'm stoked when I get my stuff in the small bags...

Default What kills me

Howdy,
What kills me is that places where dogs are welcome are getting scarcer and scarcer.
The last two places we stayed were at Mustang Island,TX.and Lake of the Ozarks in MO., both were dog friendly and nice places. Both were covered in dog poop. Mustang Island was horrible. It is a nice place. No reflection to anything Mustang Island related other than inconsiderate dog owners. If you were looking for shells on the beach you better be careful not to step in dog piles
Lake of the Ozarks where we stay is the same way. Good enough to let you bring your dog, but inconsiderate dog owners will spoil that too and wonder why their dogs are no longer welcome.
I don't feel superior for picking up after my dog. It is part of owning one.
Those who don't will(like most things) screw it up for others.
If you own a dog you are off your own property please pick up after it.
Thanks
Mike,Mary and the dog

Golf carts are street legal in the town I live in. They don't take up as much room on the road, and use less energy than some guy tooling down to the local HEB to get a loaf of bread in a 3/4 ton PU. I cannot imagine why the cops would be against golf carts, or why you could not drive them on the streets during hours of daylight.

I am a lucky guy, my Shepherd/Ridgeback mix, "Ruger" is 97 pounds of muscle and solid ivory teeth. But he is very shy when it somes to his toilet habits, he won't go anywhere but in the deep woods where only other four footed individuals walk. And we have a heavily forested preserve nearby. But I still pack a bag as normal equipment for any outing-along with my S&W 940.
BTW, I have had a previous dog named Colt, and a pair of Labs named-Smith & Wesson!

That's the point. I don't like to get in anyone's face either, but if you like walking your dog in public places...

Too bad you couldn't help her out with a bag, but you made your point - and it was a good one.

Glad I don't live in town or some subdivision.

On a related note, I heard a dog barking incessantly last night at 0230 hrs. Went on and on. Then heard a single gunshot, total quiet the rest of the night. Maybe the dog was gun shy?

I live on a cul-de-sac with a center island. There is a poop station with a waste container and bags that is always stocked by the HOA on said center island.

There are piles of poop within feet of the waste station

Neighbors dog used to use my yard. It took about a week to train it not to. My neighbor hated the fact that I repeatedly shot their dog with paint balls, even called the police. Big deal. After a couple more days of non-lethal impacts, the dog stayed away. What can I say? Dogs are dumb and most of their owners aren't any smarter...well maybe smarter, but certainly not any more considerate. Hope this doesn't offend those of you who are responsible dog owners, but you are the minority it seems.

What's the deal with golf carts? Do they pose a serious threat in some parts of the country? I have seen them on the road, along with tractors, cherry shakers, ATV's, snowmobiles, cyclists, etc. and I just drive by them. I must be missing something here!

Last time I checked it was against the law to drive a golf cart on a public street. What's that about removing the moat from thine own eye?

My late dad had a wonderful quote . . . though I sometimes get worked up and don't follow his wise advice.

He'd remind me, "In 100 years, NONE of this will matter."

It kind of puts things in perspective for me. Maybe it will encourage others too.

Default How I stopped dog POOP on my property ...

I have STOPPED getting dog POOP by my driveway. An owner and his Lab thought that the electric pole and culvert by my drive was a doggie comfort station and regularly contributed large piles of poop verifying this belief.

When picking up pine cones in the back yard, I noticed that they had sharp prickly points all around. If these pine cones hurt my fingers they would probably hurt the feet of the dog if he tried to stand on them to poop.

BRILLIANT IDEA ??

I collected a large basket of pine cones and put them where the doggie comfort station had been.

Later I added a basket of those "porcupine eggs" (those spiky balls from gum trees) to the newly designated Discomfort Station.

Not a shot was fired ...
