Please excuse my pride
My son is a commander with the 173rd-just completed his third combat tour (two in Iraq, and as a CO in Afghanistan). Now home in Germany he has been selected to jump into Nijmegan, the Netherlands. The same DZ where his great uncle PFC Cecil Hines, 508th PIR, was killed Sept. 1944. My son will be carrying his uncle's Purple Heart. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Neat stuff, I'm glad he's able to jump into Nijmegan.
As a former 11B I know it's a tough job, I appreciate his service.

What is the jump for? Is it a regular jump, or a commemoration of the 44 jump? No matter why, that would have to be a moving moment.
My compliments and thanks to your son, to you, and all our Vets.

Thank you for asking. Apparently it's a commemorative jump-based on weather, since the 44 operation took place in Sept. As a foot note-he was also selected to jump into Normandy! Pretty busy in between deployments!

It's really a feeling that is hard to describe when you are in the same place where your father (uncle, grandfather, etc.) served. I had the opportunity to visit the old Buchenwald concentration camp when I was stationed in Germany; my father was one of the leading troops that liberated the camp in 1945.
Good luck to your son in his career.

A wise old Coast Guard WO3 told me this and I'll never forget it:
"There are two times when Real Men cry! Extreme Pride and Extreme Sadness!"
I have found this to be absolutly true! Even reading about your son, I have a Tear of Pride in my eyes just learning about him. We all are proud of him and of all his brothers and sisters in arms!
Carry ON!!!

No brag, just facts.
Yes, you (and your son) have a right to be proud.
Tell him thanks from us, and have him pass that on to 'the troops'

You have the right to be proud:

AIRBORNE TOAST
I have ridden the skies in great machines,
hooked up and jumped with the best of men.
I have fought long and hard, and when I felt I had no energy left,
I have been fired by the fear that I stopped fighting, my comrades would die.
And when I was in danger, enemy all around,
I heard the thunder from my left and my right, as my life was defended.
I have never been alone.
I live, jump, fight and battle to victory with the greatest assemblage of men on earth.
Gentlemen, to the BROTHERHOOD of the AIRBORNE.
To the AIRBORNE !

Congradulations Sir.
You should be extremely Proud.
I severed with many fine young men that I went through the Pre Airborne Infantry School at Ft. Gordon (Camp Crockett) and Jump School (43rd Company) with who became Sky Soldiers. These were fine young men who served valiantly in Vietnam.
All fine young men and I'm sure they have not changed in the intrem.

I posted that some time ago-my son just contacted me from Alaska (he's with an Airborne outfit there) and this is what he told me: a gentleman living in Mook ( near Groesbeek) the Netherlands has been researching MIAs/KIAs from the Nijmegan operation. The area where casualties were initially buried is being developed and he rescued artifacts from that site-He has been attempting to return personal items to next of kin, and has a dog tag belonging to Cecil Hines.
Cecil is now interred in Washington state-so the dog tag was left behind when bodies were moved.
The gentleman had attempted to contact me, having gotten my name from an article in a newsletter-the e-mail address is not valid since it is my Department of the Army e-mail-I'm retired. But he was able to track down my son.
I wear a 508th PIR patch on my motorcycle jacket in honor of PFC Hines.

I believe it's in the vicinity of Sedro Wooley-his parents (my great grand parents) had a farm there- and were very religious- Ill renew my research and find out-drop the forum a note-
I'm still a little overwhelmed that this ID tag was discovered-and coincidentally we were stationed in the Netherlands. What are the odds?
As a PS: the Dutch and Belgic people still appreciate what we have done- through two world wars and thru the Cold War-

A follow up-and beginning of a new journey

I received Cecil Hines' dog tag and a piece of parachute (from T-drop zone) today-The dog tag was recovered in 1988-!!!
There is also a witness account of what transpired by a paratrooper who had been with Cecil-Cecil had been with two other paratroopers well forward of the line of departure-in an effort to re-take the drop zone-they came under fire from a 20 mm and Cecil was hit in the neck-
So the unit had made a counter attack-and what is important, at least to me is that he was forward of the LD-For those who are not familiar with the "control measure-graphic" That is the commitment to the attack-it is duty to the team-it is sacrifice in the face of terrible danger.
Now I will contact The Airborne Museum at Fort Bragg, and the 508th Parachute Association. The dog tag and piece of parachute are in a plastic cover-I'm reluctant to touch either. I understand what they mean and what it took to get those relics onto Dutch soil.
Thank you for reading this-My son is still parachuting in Alaska
