Default shipping ups

Can someone explain why a handgun must be shipped next day air when returning it to the factory for repair? Then it is returned ups ground. I paid $64 with ins. and the factory charged me $14 for return shipping. I dont understand.

The shippers say overnight cuts down on theft of guns...but not sure why they don't have the same policy on return...

If I may ask, what Company sent it back UPS ground?? Any company I have ever dealt with has usually sent it back 2 day Fed Ex or UPS.

But I do agree it it's pretty lame for the customer to have to ship it overnight and to pay the big money for that. One of the first not so good guns I ever bought I am sure I paid more in shipping then the gun was worth and that was for "warranty" work.

The carriers require overnight to cut down on theft, as Sip says.

It is NOT required by law- it is simply their policy.

Big companies can cut a deal with the carriers. The company can play them against each other to allow INSURED ground shipments. You know- "Well UPS, if you won't, I bet FedEx will...."

I think some big distributors even ship ground without cutting a deal.
Think about it-
Ship 3000 handguns per year for $12 ground= $36,000.
versus
Ship 3000 guns per year overnight for $60= $180,000

Ya think they can eat a few stolen Glocks for the $144,000 difference?

You'd think they would screen employees and do a few lie detector test rather than put up with theft of this nature. What keeps the dishonest employees from stealing other high end items? This just doesn't pass the b/s test. Rip-Off in my opinion. One reason I avoid UPS if possible. They are just greedy and taking advantage of the industry.

There is no legal requirement that a handgun be shipped via overnight. As Lee said, it's a UPS & a FEDEX policy. All that the BATFE says is that it must be shipped via common carrier, which means UPS or FEDEX. Here's the exact citation:

May a non-licensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?

A non-licensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30]
