Default I'm trying to decrease my property value.

I've always heard everyone wanting their property value to go up, and I've never understood it. The only time I'd want it up is if I was going to sell it- but while I own it, I want it to be as worthless as possible- discourages neighbors and, in a perfect world should help keep taxes low, right? (We know this isn't the way it works...)

I think I need some junk cars, miscellaneous sundry junk and metal- maybe a railroad car or two- and give the lawnmower a good retirement. I figure the place needs a little atmosphere.

The only problem I have, is...Mrs. Griffith doesn't agree.

I have a rental that had a neighbor I would like to send you! I think he has lowered my value and my renter is moveing probley due to him!
His rollup garage door fell down six months ago and he hasnt attempted to fix it, and the place looks worse than the town dump! I drove past two days ago to look for wind damage on the roof of our rental and was shocked to see our managment company had put up a for rent sign in front! No one answered the door, and the lease is up the end of june, 3 months! Be carefull of what you ask for!

Contact your local agriculture extention service (google 'state' agriculture extention service). Depending how much property you have, there may be ways to reclasify your property to timber land, farm land, or maybe some set aside programs in your area.

If your area has a forrestry class which often reduces your tax rate, you can plant small trees for christmas tree harvest & qualify.

I've looked into that, but you have to have 10 contiguous acres to get the reduced rates. I've got plenty, but not enough contiguous. If I could just get some in between, I could do it but for now- it's a impossibility. It's already agricultural, but it's still terribly expensive.

I'm all for paying taxes, just not property taxes. Georgia had a bill introduced to get rid of them a few years ago...but the school folks made an uproar or some such.

Put a Cow or Sheep out there and get it zoned AG like all the big developers down here. Thousands of acres of prime property some on water, pay nothing due to the cattle loop hole.

Put the old toilet out front and plant flowers, seems to always work

It won't make any difference.

The 'economy' has caused my assessed property valuation to fall over $100k in the past 4 years, yet my taxes have gone up by nearly 50%.

Be sure to put a wringer washing machine on the porch. If no porch, make one using semi-trimmed tree trunks for posts, and odd length boards for the floor.

Chain at least two coon hounds to the posts.

Take down at storm doors, and put up used screen doors.

The above will definitely get you started.

Above is what the feller up the holler has, and his place is worth almost nothing.

Andy,

Why not go condo? You still own the land.

'Course, you can make other improvements, such as that root cellar I know you want for all that canning y'all are gonna be doin' this August and September.

One of the advantages of this system, of course, is that once installed, it's the dickens to pay to have it removed. You could also use it to to store extra engine hoists and stuff that won't fit in the front yard.

Hope this helps.

Put a huge (five feet tall) blue gargoyle on a stump in your front yard, like a neighbor here did.

There are at least three folks within a few blocks of me who have "gone native" with their lawns. They've planted prairie grasses and other plants native to the area. Most of us around here call them weeds. One of them looks OK. The other two, not so much.

I like the bunker/bus idea, but the water table would be too high here. It would rust out quickly.

You could try starting your own religion. Churches are tax exempt.
My attempt fell through, the Dept. of Extortion doesn't like The Church of the Holly Hand Ejector.
Must be Glock heathens.

Default The First Amendment is the best.

I once got a letter from the city ordering me to remove the junk from my yard. I had to agree with them, it was looking a little tacky, so I got a 10 yd. dumpster and filled it. Then I wrote the city back: "The junk has been removed as requested. Everything left is sculpture."

My next door neighbor has a house built in 1847, as I do. But his looks like a new house. He "remodeled" it bit by bit so he would not have to move it to meet current setback. For a long time, he left the wall facing me unfinished, so my yard looked at old siding and tar paper. I encouraged him to leave it that way for the benefit of my tax assessor, and his. He finally had to finish it off in order to sell it.
