Question Your Gun Buying Habits... Any Rhyme or Reason?

I was just thinking about the guns that I've purchased this year. Three!! I love wheel guns but also semi-autos. If a good deal comes along, and the stars align just right, I seem to pop for it!

The last four guns I have bought (including one at the tale end of last year) are as follows...

4013 TSW non-rail NOS (Nov last year)
14-4 6"
FNP 9
19-3 2 1/2"

So, Do you have any rhyme or reason to your gun collecting and What were your last 4 gun purchases?

Last year I bought 6 new (old) SW's. Now, I have a real itch for a nice Colt 1911 - it has to be a Colt and a real nice one - sentimental I guess. I have no R or R - I should make a list and stick to it, but it doesn't happen like that in guns.

I buy whatever I see that catches my fancy and is a good deal. No rhyme or reason whatsoever. I thought for a while I would collect Eastern Bloc military stuff, but then I got sidetracked on this whole S&W thing. The last four have been a Remington 760, an H&R .22 revolver, a Heritage .22 revolver, and a Remington 870.

Here is 2011 so far.
98% Mossberg Palomino .22lr lever action.
80% Marlin 39A 1958 mfg with old weaver tip-off scope,
99% Rossi mod 92 .357/38 saddle ring carbine,
99% Marlin 883ss 22mag laminated stock, ss, bolt action, tube fed,
99% Taurus mod63 Winchester clone. 22lr semi auto,
LNIB Henry .22lr pump octagonal barrel,

S&W Mod.64-4 2 inch
S&W Mod.25 4 inch
S&W pre mod. 10 2 inch
So far this year. Humm, seems to be a pattern developing here. Wonder if I've become a S&W wheel gun collector?

I guess there's no rhyme nor reason to what I buy. Of the last 4 I've picked up, only one was something I thought about buying well before I did. It was a new 642-1 (I "needed" a new carry gun.)
The other three are pretty disparate. A TT Olympia. (Chinese copy of a Walther pre-war .22 target pistol), a Colt M1903 .32 ACP and an original Springfield M1875 Officers Model Trapdoor.

Smith Model 39 (no dash).
Smith Model 625, 45 Colt.
Feinwerkbau Model 300 air rifle.
Feinwerkbau Model 65 air pistol.
The latter two let me practice at home without going to the range. Thney're a LOT more accurate than I am.

I think we need to see pictures of that Officers Model Trapdoor.

As for me, targets of opportunity.

Most of them find me instead of the other way around. I'm always interested in finding a nice gun at a good price. My last four (in reverse order) were a Springfield Range Officer, S&W Model 13, S&W .22-32 Kit Gun, and a nickel S&W 34-1.

I bought a brand new Model 638 last Oct. Nice little carry piece, Loading some hollow points @ 860 FPS. S&W's always were my favorites. That's going back a lot of years.

My tastes have changed several times over the years. I seem to be seeking out the guns I first desired (and sold off) many years ago! guess I should have just kept them the first time around, LOL!

If it's a good deal I may spring for it. I'll either stick it in the safe or use it as trade fodder at my local GS. No rhyme or reason as to what I might buy with the exception of 1911's and variations, .410 shotguns, oddball shotguns (Darne France le site officiel).

The last four that I've bought/traded for:
S & W M10 6" Taper Bbl. 38 Spcl.
S & W M & P 4" Taper Bbl 38 Spcl.
S & W 1076 (Pictures and paperwork mailed to Roy Jinks for possible confirmation as an FBI gun)
Colt Double Eagle Commander 45ACP

Here behind the tofu curtain ya kinda gotta grab what ya can, especially older S&W. They're not on our "approved" list so if they're not already in the state... and if you want it ya gotta move. Even at our inflated prices nice handguns don't last long.

I have a mental list. If something presents itself and is a decent deal I jump on it if I have the $$$.

Right now my top of list is a .44 Magnum. S&W M29 or early Ruger SBH. There's a 3 screw SBH in excellent condition at one of my LGS.

Too bad I got laid off last Friday....

I buy guns that I like and want first. If I see it, like it and want it and the pricde is right, I buy it.

Next I buy guns that I may not want but the price is so good (usually bought from individuals) that I cannot afford to not buy it.

Many of the guns I own are duplicates of others I already have but the condition may be better, the price right or I just want to buy something.

People think I spend a lot of money on guns but there are some that spend way more fishing and after the trip will not have anything to show for their money. Spending money on guns is an investment.

I used to fish multiday. I tell the wife a gun costs about the same as a 2-3 day trip & I'll be able to enjoy it for years...

A good friend of mine spent $20,000 on a boat. Each trip to one of the local lakes will cost about $100 in fuel for the truck and boat. Then there are launching fees, tackle, food, drinks and such. Add in yearly insurance on the boat, repairs and a four yr depreciation on the boat. Each trip, by his own figures, cost him about $200 for the day. This does not include lake permits, tackle replacement and casual expenses.

People spend more on fishing and hunting than they think.

My only R or R has been to scratch a lifetime itch I wasn't able to scratch for most of my adult life. I have been successful with the scratching for the past 3 years and have purchased most of what I felt the well healed shooter should own.

My first prize was a M17-6 no lug, then a M14-4, 4506-1, S&W 1911, M25-2 and lastly a M18-3. I also managed to purchase a few off brands such as Beretta and SIG. My stable is about full and I have narrowed my search to mostly older S&W P&R revolvers. As retirement is approaching in a year or two, my buying habits are going to have to taper off, but I think I will have enough toys to keep me happy for another 40 years.

Whatever catches my fancy and is a deal.

More importantly, it has to be a deal first, and then it has to catch me.

Well I have a short list of guns that I want to buy. For me buying is a permanent venture, so I cull over everything in search of something I can value as a family heirloom. The next two on my list are for the fact that I don't have either style: revolver, and semi-auto shotgun. Would like my kids to have a little bit of everything to try when they get old enough.
Looking for either a S&W model 66 or 686 with 4" barrel for a revolver, and for the semi-auto shotgun I am looking for a Remington 1100 preferrably "skeet" model. While on my search I am looking for a couple .22 caliber guns for my youngest son a semi-auto and a rifle. As I purchased a 2206 w/4.5" barrel for my oldest and a Winchester 290--which was his great-grandfathers. So for my youngest I am looking for a 2206, and either a Rossi 62SAC or Ruger 10/22.

Buying guns is an evolutionary process like addicition. With me it started when I was a young hunter and wanted something besides my dads old 1890s Nitro Hunter 12ga SB to hunt ducks in Louisiana (still got it). My first shotgun purchase was an 870 Wingmaster 12ga and later a model 12 Winchester 20ga. Passion (obsession) takes over at some point as you horse trade, you end up with Lugers, Marlins, Winchesters, Colts, etc. I was late coming into the S&W phase of my addiction, and that has taken a sharp turn to restoring old scarse Smiths to good shooting condition as shooters. Not to say that I still don't look for bargins as others do. My 2011 score so far:
S&W m28-2 4" s serial number
S&W m28-2 6"
Colt Frontier Scout .22 SA, 125th Anniversary
S&W New Century Triple Lock 4" Nickel in .44Spl (project gun)

I have a number of long guns and hunting revolvers. I started my auto buying binge with a High Standard 22 because of a great deal, but was always partial to S&W and have gotten into their autos and really like them as it shows in my sig at the bottom.

Most of the time it's something that catches my eye. Sometimes it 's something that is just "too good of a deal to pass up". The last four are:
M66-2 2 1/2" engraved (caught my eye)
Rossi "Ranch Hand" .357 (caught my eye)
Glock G27 .40 (what can you say? Practical)
K-38 Combat Masterpiece (too good price to pass up)
Wish I would run in to more S&W's at a price too good to pass up.

I ain't saying that I own guns, but here's list of 4 that I have seen around here.
S&W .357 magnum, nickle, 3.5 barrel
S&W Model 35-1
Colt .22 Official Police
Savage Varmiter Low Profile .223

Sometimes they are planned, sometimes they are impulsive, sometimes I'm smart, sometimes I'm stupid.

Scratching the N Frame itch . . . .

58 (pulled me back into the .41 magnum)

They are the same as the women I've dated. They have to have a certain look and feel. I don't care if others think they are ugly I just love them for what they are.

My collecting leans very heavily toward stainless steel J-frames, and that's what my last four (actually, last six or seven) purchases were.

Absolutely no R or R to my buying. However, it's usually one of the following: 1. Something I've always wanted. 2. Something I had once upon a time and in a moment of stupidity traded away. 3. I'm at the right place at the right time.

So far this year, they have been always wanteds. A Browning BL-22, in at least 99%, it had just come in to my LGS, and he hadn't even put a tag on it yet. A fair price at $375, but I'd always wanted one, so it went home with me.

A month later in the same store, in came a Savage Model 72 Crackshot. I had wanted one since I was a kid. It was on consignment, and in excellent condition, and he was asking
$115. It went home with me also.

Then, about two weeks ago, I bought a Yugoslavian Mod. 98 Mauser. My very first rifle was a 1891 Argentine, and I'd had a couple Spanish 93's, but this is my first 98, although not a true K98. It took an hour and a half to clean the cosmoline off, and it had the shiniest bore with the sharpest rifling I've seen in a military rifle. I haven't shot it yet, but all the necessary stuff for both shooting and reloading is on the way. I've been buying, selling, and trading for 40 years now, and this is my first 8mm!

My handgun collection is very S&W and Ruger heavy.......well, pretty much dominated. I don't look for semi-autos anymore. Gun shows for me are a blur of black plastic handguns and rifles, I don't even look at them.

I have been selling rifles lately, but my rifle collection is mostly bolt-actions, and half of those are various Mosin-Nagants. I got bit by the Mosin bug in 2002 and ended up with about 40+ of them, I use all of them as shooters and I guess I would say 7.62x54r is one of my primary rifle calibers.

Boats and fishing = $9.00 per month boat insurance and boat hasn't gotten wet in over a year.

629s with unfluted cylinders, L-frame blue and stainless in 4 barrel lengths, random nickle guns for her, 1911s because it caught my eye and the price was right.

Now that my gun buying stopped, I have more disposable income -- until that Bushmaster lower receiver arrives. Just got my latest bank statement. My savings account is earning 0.15% annual interest that's 1/64 % annual interest. Any old S&W will do better than that.

EDIT 4-30-14: Just spent big money on fishing. Wife's 2-year fishing license was $17 and 1 year boat ramp pass was $30. First fishing trip is planned for 5-5-14 with a shooting buddy. If the boat isn't used this year, it will be up for sale in March 2015; boat, trailer, motor, fish poles (28) and tackle boxes(3). Use the money for vacation.

Added a Kimber M82 surplus target rifle in 22 LR from CMP and a Unertl 15X scope from GunBroker to the collection.

No rhyme or reason whatsoever...
I grab what is there if it is something I have thought about and the price is right. Condition is unimportant, but the thing must be in shootable condition machanically. A lot of my stuff is of the old & beat up variety, but they all work, and were secured with minimal outlay.
Last 3: 1903 Colt .32ACP Pocket Hammerless, ( #6xxx, ~1903 or '04), S&W .32 Safety Hammerless,(~1908), S&W .38 Safety Hammerless
(~1890) Can't remember what the 4th one was; a C-96 Mauser rework, A 1917 DWM Luger (all waffen markings and correct numbers), or a decent Walther P-38 AC-44. So count all 6. The luger was the biggest hit, but it was $500 under low book, and 95%. It's actual value is every penny of high book. Cannot walk away from things like that.
I will never likely have a museum collection, but I will have a bunch of decent shooters. By God....

My 2011 activity (so far; in reverse order of acquisition):
S&W M58 ("S" series; first year, I think. Just outta lay-away; paid way too much)
CZ 452 22 LR (suppressed; this one is still costing me)
Yugo Zastava M57 (cheap gun binge continued)
Galesi 22L (not LR)(...yeah, another cheapie)
S&W 1000P 12 ga (the beginning of the 2011 cheap gun binge)

I dunno; my theme seems to be cheap and slightly unusual guns, counterbalanced by a few excursions into the high-rent district. Mrs.Speedo swears that it comes from my no-class, trailer park up-bringing. -S2

Seems like I am in the same boat-no real rhyme nor reason. I have a few things that I would like to have, but don't "need" any of them, so I wait until a good deal comes along on any one of them.
Last four :
-686 6"(awaiting delivery now)
-Mossberg 12 ga 3-1/2" ("needed" a new turkey gun!)
-M 28-2 6" (great deal, couldn't pass it up)
-6946.

I find that I buy guns when I go to a store that has them, or when I get flyers in the mail from those stores, or when I find myself with several hundred dollars of discretionary cash, or when I find myself disappointed or tired of looking at one of the gun in my safe.

I just counted, I may have a problem. I might be a gunaholic.

I bought just 2. First a Browning Medalion left handed 7MM Mag for my grandson and a 22 Marlin Model 60 for a granddaughter. All were B.D. presents.

For many years I bought whatever caught my fancy, and ended up with a bunch of nice stuff to no particular purpose. More recently I have concentrated on S&W and Savage 99's.

Last four were:

Nickel 38/44 HD
Savage 1895 in .303
Savage 99F in .303
Savage 99G in .303

Seems to be a pattern. I finally have managed to develop a collection rather than an accumulation. Last twenty have been S&W or Savage, but one never knows what will come along.

WOW! A thread revival!! Since my first post, I've picked up a NOS Sig 2340 LEO version and last week a Model 60 Class A engraved 2" that I couldn't refuse! Going to get that one lettered.

Guess there ain't no rhyme or reason!

Any rhyme or reason? . . . . 5-screw S&W, pre-64 Winchesters and older Colts. If they're original, good condition and price reasonably; almost impossible to say no.

But the Trapdoor Springfield. I always wondered exactly how the action worked. I'd see them open the breech and a 45-70 casing come flying on outta there, so when an original condition 1882 Trapdoor came available at $950 shipped, I bought it. It showed up in an extra long box and was pretty heavy. And it was the gem it was advertised to be. All original in every respect and a nice shiney bore. Wiped it all down and marvelled at the sight of it. Yup, the 1882 cartel was still firmly impressed into the stock and everything checked out perfectly. But, after a few days of looking at it and not being a S&W, Winchester or a Colt, I began to wonder what the heck I bought this thing for. So I stuck it for sale at $1075 shipped and it sold the first hour. Bought me a 99% 4" barrel Python with the money and figured life is good. So my answer to the question of ryme or reason, is yes.

Rod
