I'm surprised that nobody
apparently noticed the date yesterday, April 18th, nor even mentioned the ride of Paul Revere. Or, that on this date, in 1775, Patriots met the British in the towns of Lexington and Concord.
Those, to me, were important events in our nation's history and worth of remembrance.

Nothing was mentioned in my kid's school either...apparently, he was taken out of their new history books under pressure from PETA since he slapped his horse before galloping off...

It was my birthday. Also the Doolittle raid on Tokyo. I remember these things.

This is a busy week historically. Revolutionary war begins, ATF lays siege to the Branch Davidians and the CSA, Columbine and VA Tech shootings, OK City bombing, Deepwater Horizon oil rig blows up, Danica Patrick wins an Indy race, etc., etc.
Keeping my eye on the news. The red light on my tinfoil hat has been flashing erratically.

Paul Revere
Listen my children and you shall hear
Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere
On the 18th of April in 75
Hardly a man is still alive
Who remembers that famous day and year
He said to his friend
If the British march
By land or Sea
Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch
Of the North Church tower as a signal light
One if by land, two if by sea
And I on the opposite shore will be
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
To every Middlesex village and farm
For the country folk to be up and to arms
That's all I remember, I'm 61 and had to learn that poem in sixth grade.

April 18th... why that's the day when construction began on St. Peter's Basilica in 1506.

I had the pleasure of visiting St. Peter's Basilica a couple of weeks ago. It's amazing what they could build hundreds of years ago. Much of the stuff they put up today is ready for the wrecking ball after a few decades.

yeah ... which is a lesson in why we need to listen to our crazy old grand parents when they rant about how they did things back int he day .
somewhere in the rambling often lives some long lost method

Sesame Street use to have a little segment called "which of these things is not like the others". I am going to go with Danica Patrick. I am not saying she is not news worthy, but.......! I wonder if maybe that is what is making the red light on you tin foil hat flash?

Yeah; I remember Jimmie Doolittles raid on Tokyo very well. After many defeats America was reeling. Doolittles raid didn't do much damage but we thought at last we had a chance to hit the Japs where it hurt.

When I was stationed in Masssachusetts in the late 1950s, April 19 was a state holiday: Paul Revere Day. do they still celebrate it?
In a like vein: when I was stationed in Thule, Greenland, sometime in March was the King of Denmark's birthday, and we celebrated it as a holiday. I remember drinking a toast to him at the O Club.

It is sort of an "off" anniversary-the 236th, likewise the 69th anniversary of the Doolittle raid. Also I think the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War is getting a bit more attention.

In most of New England it's a Holiday called "Patriots Day".The "Boston Marathon" is held that day.
