gun-oriented ice cream?
Well, if you've just been longing to waste a few minutes reading the most useless trivia currently on this board, you've come to the right place.
Last evening I was on a grocery run to the area Wally World when I noticed that they are now carrying a brand of ice cream called "Magnum Classic"(Really, they are). Now that got my inquisitive mind going. Unfortunately I had no classes in marketing in college, and thus didn't get very far trying to determine the rationale for using such terms as a name for a frozen dessert. In these parts a fairly good percentage of patrons spotting the carton might momentarily wonder why they had put ammunition in the frozen food section. The only thought I could generate in my ignorance was, "Does it go through you faster?"
Knowing the vast, broad base of knowledge to be found among this forum's membership, I thought maybe there were at least a few marketing experts who could offer some plausible explanations.
Anyone want to step up to the podium?

The quick & logical answer is that Wally World locates their stores mostly away from well to do cities. In rural areas where guns are supposed to be more common. The name "Magnum" got your attention and that is good marketing.
Did eating it before a trip to the range improve your marksmanship?

I don't think they are trying to be gun-oriented at all but simply calling their ice cream "great". "Magnum" doesn't make me think gun first. I go straight to texts like "O Magnum Mysterium" which mean "great, or magnificent, mystery" or think of a "Magnum Opus" a "great work" So they are saying their ice cream is great or magnificent, not trying for the gun angle, from what I can see. Not that I'm a marketing anything but merely a word nerd.
ETA, Can also mean simply "big" as pointed out in the next post about the champagne bottle.

Keep in mind that Magnum also means a larger bottle of wine, especially of champagne.

Ah, I knew there would be some enlightening comments. The title wasn't intended to be serious; it's just what came to mind to fulfill the requirement.

Wrench,
We have more in common than I thought. I was a music major and an arrangement of "O Magnum Mysterium" was in my college choir's repertoire. I'm also a word nerd from way back, and am aware of the word's meaning. But since it's used in my current circles only to refer to certain firearms, ammunition, and a certain model of vehicle, that's the usage I tend to think of first. Thanks for the response!

I think performance-enhancing ice cream is against the rules.

Snowman, I'm particularly fond of Morten Lauridsen's setting of O Magnum Mysterium.
In any case, I'm sure Magnum Ice Cream can pack a punch.

Back on target:
Gun Shaped Ice Cream
Probably not the best marketing idea, in fact a down-right stupid one. And, no; this was not offered at the NRA convention. -S2
