Default Seal Team #6.

Dick Marchinko, original Navy Commander of Seal Team #6 today told why he commisioned it #6. At the time there were only Seal Teams #1 and #2, so he named his #6 so the Russian would worry about where numbers #3, #4 and #5 were. Smart guy.

Reminds me of the story I heard where some students released 3 goats into the school building with numbers 1, 2, and 4 painted on them. The story goes that they darn near went crazy looking for goat #3...

A very old ploy.

In WW II, the Army designed some Airborne Division patches for divisions that never existed. They are called Ghost Divisions. Soldiers stationed in England before D-Day sewed them on and went downtown for the German spies to see and chat up.

For D-Day they created a whole phantom army group-FUSAG/First United States Army Group base in Kent. The idea was to not only mislead the Germans as to the strength of Allied forces, but to convince them the Normandy landings were a diversion and the real invasion would occur in the Pas de Calais area.
