Official "Lousiana/Mississippi flood thread
I have a lot of friends in Louisiana, and I grew up on the West Bank. I know we have a lot of posters and regulars who have updates on what is going on in the bayou...
I was thinking we could keep all the updates in one thread...and I figured I would start it since it was my brilliant idea.....
Post away.....

Well while watching KATC tv it did say it was legal to shoot any wild pigs running through your property. Didn't mention if you had to have a valid hunting license though. Frank

I am just happy the Mississippi River apparently reached a man made crest earlier and lower than expected. Thanks to the opening of spillway gates, a lot of potential damage was prevented.
While I feel for those that lost homes and crops due to the gate opening, at least they had time to get their possessions out and will be well compensated for their losses.

This looks like its going to be devastating to the area's economy. Flood water will destroy thousands of homes, acres of farmland and oyster beds. My prayers go out to all the people affected by this.

Spoke with one of the movers and shakers in lower St. Mary and what he said was VERY encouraging. Apparently the Corps have got their act together on this one and the National Guard is doing wonderful work. Plus it seems we are also getting more than our money's worth from the prisioners as well! This is the first time the system has been fully tested and there is optimism that it is going to work exactly as intended.
As I have said earlier, the sheriff has dictated a free fire zone regarding the pigs on the levees-he just warns us not to shoot the ones that have antlers

Best wishes to all who live in harms way, the weather has been wild lately.
With the huge tornado's, massive floods and crazy weather down south, this is one of the few times that I can say I'm happy to be livin' up this way. This past winter I had 4 inches of water in my basement, worst event of the 15 years that I've been living in the current house. Pales in comparison to what my fellow Americans are going through.
We have not forgotten you, and will continue to help both financially and spiritually.

My heart goes out to all those folks flooded to save New Orleans and, I believe, Baton Rouge. I guess it is the right thing to do, but it is troubling nevertheless. I think the folks in Louisana and the Gulf Coast have had enough trouble to last them a lifetime.

I live in Berwick which is just across the river from Morgan City. So far there isn’t any flooding and most people haven’t done anything to evacuate.
Most people don’t think it will flood
At the insistence of people I work with, I evacuated quite a few guns, tools, etc…. Probably ended up as a big mistake
At this time there is seepage at a number of places in the levees around New Orleans. A lot will depend on how well the levee holds up. If there is a levee failure or what looks like a failure, Morganza will be opened up some more.

I work in and around Baton Rouge . The levees are doing ok . Some seepage and a few sand boils but everything looks fine . The biggest problem seems to be runaway barges on the river .

from what I can see from here, 15 hours away, it SEEMS as if the Morganza and Bonnet Care are doing what they are supposed to be doing...and that the flooding is not gonna be quite as high as expected.....
Unless a levee fails, it seems like ya'll might come out of this thing reasonably intact

Over here in MS they say that the sound as far as Gulfport will be fresh water driving the fish East. The mature fish will leave in search of salt water but the new larvae will not survive. The charter boat captains have been reporting limit catch's on Speck's with plenty of Red's thrown in.
Lots of fish are being caught wad fishing and from the piers.
This will be gone until the fresh water is flushed out in the sound. Last year it was the oil spill and now this.

I took this shot in LA just before crossing into MS on I-20 on Monday. Looks like the river is up just a bit.
