Default Armed Forces Day

Today I would like to thank the men and woman of the United States Armed Forces that are out there continuing to do what their parents and their parents before them have done, protect our freedom.

Today I would like to thank them for continuing to showing the honor and discipline of the fiercest & finest fighting force this world has ever known.

Today I again proudly display my United States flag in honor of these brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces knowing that I enjoy the freedoms of life and sleep peacefully at night because of them.

Today I proudly salute you all. Thank you!

God speed and may you all return home safely to the greatest nation in the world, the United States of America.

While you are thanking these folks for protecting your freedom, you might give a little thought to this fact. Only 1% of the American people are in uniform today. What's wrong with that picture?

This discussion just reminds me of something.

I graduated from high school in May of 1959.

Back then we all thought about and talked about something....your "military obligation."

What did I do? Well in November of 1958, in the first semester of my senior year of high school, I joined the Army Reserve, under what was call the Reserve Forces Act of 1955, aka RFA55.

The day after my high school graduation I was on a train bound for Fort Jackson, South Carolina in May of 1959.

Out of my high school graduating class of just over 300, nearly fifty were with me on the way to basic training.

I did six months active duty for training and was on my way home in late November 1959 and enter college in January 1960.

Now did I sit on my keester and just screw around? No, I went to school "year round" and graduated with a four year degree in May, 1963, all the while serving in an active reserve unit.

My only regret is that I did not stay in the reserves until retirement.

Now as an added note, after I graduated and had spent one year as a public school teacher....I decided to go into the Air Force officer program. I took all the tests....and waited....and waited....and out of desperation, because my wife was preganant with our first child....took another teaching job. The Air Force had "lost" my application and I found my self in a situation of noting being able to buy groceries, so I took another job. (I was not obligated to the military since my priot service.)

These were different times. You went to the military because you were "expected" to do so.

I am seventy years old now. My only regret is that Uncle Sugar doesn't want me now. I would enlist in a New York minute if I were able.
