Default Bone grips

Not wanting to hijack the "buffalo bone grip" thread, figgered I'd start another'n.

I read many westerns, growing up, where the cowboy had "bone grips" on his Colt. If they make buffalo bone grips, why doesn't anyone make cow bone grips? Should be much cheaper than elephant tooth, as the bone is readily available. Should be even more available and cheaper than wood, since it is, essentially, scrap.

Anybody know why not?

Well, for what it's worth, about all of the bone grips I hear about are carved a bit and burnt so that it looks like stag. I assume that is cow bone. Now I don't think they are as nice as stag, but I do think that they can look pretty nice. Especially on a single action. Sorta that 50's TV cowboy look, ya know?

It may have something to do with the bone density. The larger the animal generally the denser the bone.
