got one of these shortly after i turned 18. other people drank i bought guns and ammo!

picked it up for 90 bucks. friend of mine has one he inherited from an uncle who passed. was telling me he wanted bayonet for it. so i figured it would be fairly cheap seeing as how my 90 doller gun came with all the fixins thrown in for free. found out the bayonet sells for around 150 at a cheap deal lol.

anyway wondering does anyone else have one of these? if so have you done any crazy mods or anything. been thinking about pickin one up for a kinda sniper build

I picked up this '44 carbine about six months ago. Haven't fired it yet because I can't find ammo that is allowed by the range I shoot at.

yeah be careful my friend and i shot through a three inch tree an inch post ten feet behind the tree and into the tree about five foot behind the post lol

The 7.62x54R is equivelant to our 30/06. I'm told milsurp ammo out of the short barreled carbine is a hoot.

lol should have guessed cheaper than dirt is good on a lot of things but an occasional hih price slips through

I wouldn't pay $150 for a Winchester marked 1917 bayonet!
(They go for a whole lot more...)


But then, I do more or less need one, but haven't found one for the price I want to pay yet.

If you search, you can likely get for for $5 or $10 out of a barrel of them.

fishslayer that is a model 38. the m44 has the side folding bayonette.the 38 came out first.and yes the short one are like a flame thrower when fired.I love the old mosin nagant guns.at one time I had 15 of them.Im down to 2 now. looking to get another m44.

OP, before you start modifying anything you should make certain of what you have. There is some significant collector interest in the Finnish Moisin Nagants so watch out for the letters "SA" enclosed in a box, you might have a Finn.

I've got three T-53 Chinese Mosin-Nagants. I got them from a dealer in Arizona who said they had been in a storage container and forgotten for twenty years. They were cheap ($35.00 each) and I had just gotten a C&R license. To make the shipping worthwhile I ordered three.

They were ROUGH when I got them (which was how the dealer had described them. No surprise.) A good scrubbing with hot water and dawn stripped the finish off the stocks, most of the metal. A little Birchwood-Casey stuff made them look sort of presentable.



The others look just like this one. I've never fired them. Probably never will. But they are kind of neat.

This is what the first couple looked like out of the box. That cosmoline was just baked on.

well i did background checking on mosin nagants my frined was from a diff country not one of the big ones. most of the ones from buds are all russian. i went back and checked for one of the gems. just bought another one for my father. my mom and i are goin half for fathers day. paid 125 for it. came with a side folding bayonet and a leather sling. didnt have the full kit i was hoping for but did come with 160 rounds so it was around the right price. dad gets the gun i get the ammo and mom gives me 40 bucks

A thread about these will pop up every now and then. In short, they are a hoot. I need to drag my M44 out and have a little fun come to think of it.

Shameless plug here... I've been making sight tools for the 91/30 and the 1947-up M44 Russian models, JUST about ready to release one for the M38 if the latest test model works out right.

Bad thing about the Mosins is they tend to make you want more...or is that a good thing? lol

well since they and their ammo is cheap. at least around here. guy i bought the last one from said a box of 20 was over 20 bucks. ive never paid more than 7 for the high quality.(odd thing is mine liked the cheaper ones better) id say its a good thing lol

First thing I did with my M-44 was strip the orange shellac off and stain and Tru-Oil it. Then I bought a M91-30 and did the dame thing. They're kind of a big brother-little brother thing now. They sure create a stir at the range when you touch them off at dusk. That fireball at the end of the barrel is a real draw for spectators.

good to know. next time i need ammo. which at current consumption wont be for awhile. dont get to shoot it very often. though now i know a place may have to more often

Traded mine in for an early excellent condition91/30 with a hex receiver.

I put a scout set up on mine that uses the original rear sight bracket and a 3-7x pistol scope.Went through a couple aluminum bases and rings before finding one made from steel at a gunshow that has held up great,looks home made.While its not perfect and isnt super accurate,it is what it is and does a good job.For the price,its a bargain.

i know while they both fire like brand new one is i think from 47 and the full size one is i think 33-34 cant remember. it really shows how much they put into engineering/machining these firearms. you also gotta love how long they were in service both in russia and then pretty much all the way down to middle east. there have actually been mosin nagants recovered from afganistan and iraq

My PE & PU snipers. For a couple antiques they sure don't shoot like them.

I always thought they were neat guns, I remember reading about the American intervention in Russia right after WWI and the troops turned in the 1903s for Remington made Mosin nagants.

I watch Russian and Finnish films and they have great scenes with these rifles.

I have 5 Mosins... if you go to Russia don't call them Mosin Nagants, you'll get dirty looks. The only thing Nagant contributed to the gun is a screw that holds the magazine spring in place. He then sued for patent rights and rather than giving him half of the patent money they gave him an equal amount as Mosin. Russians were very angered by this.

A nagant is a pistol. It is the only pistol to be pretty well silenced with a suppressor because the cylinder moves forward putting the brass into the rear of the barrel -- the bullets are set beneath the rim of the brass. So none, or very little gas escapes at that joint. Still not a very powerful round. Holds 7 rounds and loads like a single action revolver with a loading gate. There's no return spring on the ejector rod, so it's a pain to unload and reload. I'll have my hands on one in 11 days. (I live in Fascist California)

Of my 5 Mosins one is a PU Sniper all matching numbers which I'll keep original. ATI makes a stock that is supposed to be a drop in deal. I already have the stock and one of the mosins will go in that with the barrel cut down to 24 inches or so. I'll add a modern scope. When I do that I'll have an extra bayonet and You can have it for nothing if you send me your mailing address (harold5216(at)gmail.com It may be a few weeks before I decide which one gets what. Actually it shouldn't take too long.

I have 2 spam cans of ammo. 880 rounds -- the rounds are corrosive (I believe it's the primers they used actually) One can to shoot, one can for zombies. I think it was $170 for both cans.

Because of the corrosive ammo you clean the gun the day you shoot it. I use Ammonia mixed 50/50 with water. Some people use Windex because it has ammonia. Rinse the barrel and the ammonia will neutralize the corrosive salts and then clean your rifle as you would any other rifle.

Fine weapon, but would still rather roll with my China SKS.

The shop I bought my 2 Mosins from had a huge sign saying they are the rifles seen in "Enemy at the Gates". Always thought that was a good way to sell more Mosins.

I own three M91-30's...one is an original --- IZZY, 1943 PU sniper --- it has a beautiful stock. I get 1 3/4" moa at 100 yards with Russian N-10 sniper ammo. After shooting, my current cleaning solution is: 1/3 Simple Green, 1/3 hydrogen peroxide and 1/3 rubbing alcohol. Then I go with a ammonia based copper cleaner; then clean it all out with Hoppes #9.

People have to be careful not to polish the trigger group too much, so as to make a Mosin fail a decent drop test.

I made a poor man's scout rifle out of this one. Only change to it was the removal of the rear sight and putting a Darrell's scope mount in it's place. It wore glass for a while, but I like the red dot better.

Thought about removing the bayo. Maybe I will, maybe not.

I believe Westinghouse also made Mosins for the Russians

New England Westinghouse and Remington made them in the US. The French made some of the early ones at Chatellerault. The Russians/Soviets made them at Tula, Izhevsk and Sestroryetsk.

Mosins were also built in Poland, Romania, Hungary, Albania and China.

The Finnish rifles were former Russian/Soviet guns extensively rebuilt.

Are the 91/30 with the welded scope mount holes worth anything more than the standard Russian 91/30?

The ex-snipers are more of a novelty than anything else. If you find one that still has the original bent bolt they'll bring a decent premium, and once in a while you'll see an ex-PE or PEM that's priced higher, but ex-PU's don't usually seem to command that much more. That said, I'd probably still take one over the run-of-the-mill variety if I spotted one in with a batch of refurbs.

It did not have the bent bolt I was just curious. My local dealer had one with the rest of the 91/30's. I do not know if he noticed it or not. I already have three of them. I would like to pick up a M44 but not worth paying that much on a military surplus rifle.

Most ex-snipers do not have bent bolts. Indeed, it has even been suggested that rather more rifles were drilled for scope mounts than ever got them. No proof, but "ex-snipers" with welded up holes are not that uncommon. The holes were filled during one of the late or post war refurb cycles.

As for the prices of M44s, they have shot up in the last couple of years. I snagged one of the mint Polish pieces about three years ago and it has probably doubled in value since.
