Default Concerns about serial numbers

In another forum where members discuss other types of guns, I posted the complete serial number of a gun that I own and that I was seeking information about. Members of that forum warned me not to do that, because someone could take down the complete information about my gun, including the serial number, and then report it as stolen from them. That seems pretty far fetched to me. How would they know who I really am? Is that a valid concern?

If you filled out a 4473 when you bought it, & remember where you bought it, I don't see how it could be trouble for you. But in the future, as said, "better safe than sorry", IMHO.

Speaking as a dealer who has been thru a few such transactions , as long as ya got a receipt and proper papers from an FFL dealer or Law Enforcement Agency saying ya bought it legally , nobody else can claim it's theirs unless there's a report filed back when it supposedly happened. If for some reason it does come up stolen , the dealer has to refund your money , and it becomes the dealers problem. (trust me , I know!) The dealer SHOULD have the ID of whom he received it from. States have their own way of doing things , but some state police agencys do run numbers thru a database upon transfer of ownership. Some do not.

But someone would have to PROVE prior ownership , and prove he reported it stolen.

Some people balk at transfering privately owned guns thru FFLs or LEAs , but getting caught , however innocently , with a stolen firearm is a headache ya don't need.

It's more about privacy than anything else. For example, I don't mind saying that I own a 5" S&W Triple Lock but it serves no purpose for me to tell the world the whole serial number. It's sufficient for me to say that it is 15xx. Anyone interested in S&W Triple Locks would be able to determine that it was produced fairly early and know all they need to know about my revolver. On the other hand this forum and any guests would benefit not at all by me posting the whole serial number and I would give up more of my privacy than I care to. On the other hand if someone chooses to not x out any of their numbers, that's their business.

What's really funny is when someone x's out a few numbers in the written text and then posts clear pictures of the gun with the serial number fully visible.

Default I never understood it

Howdy,
I never understood it. I would not be afraid to post a whole number.
How would the thief know how long or how well documented my ownership has been?
If this is done to prevent some con-man from stealing your guns on line then I think it is silliness.
It doesn't hurt anymore than it helps so if it makes you feel good, I guess why not?
Me....why?
Thanks
Mike

That would be me... I just start to pay attention and then stop caring. If it ever comes to a point where they show up to take them all away I figure we are so much more screwed than that worry.

I've done that. Since my guns were purchased through FFL & I have paperwork proving it I'm not overly concerned.
