I deleted it.
Had I read it yesterday, I would have deleted it much sooner.

It was highly insulting to the French, and I will not spit in the face of the grateful french who remember what the Allies did.
As I said in one of the D-Day threads-

Those who went on to fight another day and those who sadly didn't. The British, Americans, Canadians, Danish, Polish, Free French and all the other nationalities who took part.

400 French pipers met to pay their respects to the brave Scot Billy Millin who marched ashore armed only with his bagpipes, and continued to play when he reached the beach. Sadly Billy died last year but it is nice to see the French haven't forgotten him. Nor have they forgotten all the other soldiers who landed on that day. American and British flags fly permanently throughout this region, and the Canadian flag in areas where they fought.

We owe them a vast debt. They will never be forgotten.
anglaispierre,
Thank you for that, and for remembering.

I know the French often take a bashing from us nowadays because of some stances and actions by the French government since WW II.
I find that sad, and about as logical as blaming the average US citizen for the actions of our politicians.
Don't forget, the french suffered ALL the collateral damage of that day, and the many months after, and that was after 4 yrs of occupation.
I don't think they deserved the bashing in that post, nor will I cheapen what the Allied forces did that day with that hypothetical story.

I wasn't referencing any of the stories, just that had the press known about it there would have been a different story line.

Didn't mean to fan the flames.

Good for you , Lee. The French have a long and proud martial history. They invented modern artillery.

A small French village invited and paid for a friend's mom and uncle to come to the rededication ceremony of a plaque in memory of their brother who died after bailing out of his P-38. For decades, the plaque was dedicated to un soldat inconnue, mort pour Le France. The local historical society finally identified Lieutenant Poole and rededicated the monument. I could go on, but the French really remember their heros.

did you know there is tin in modern smokeless powder?
as rifle velocities got up there, copper started to fowl the barrel kinda like lead did ..
The thing is, copper is harder than lead and far less forgiving in the barrel.
Then one day some bright spark stuck some tin foil over the charge in and artillery piece and solved the copper fowling issue through creative metallurgy....

Thank you French ... I do appreciate this contribution to the shooting sports as well as avoiding the need to risk a perfect bore with ammonia dope.

I am sure there are negative things that could be said about France, but to be honest most of the same things could be said about America today.
Sometimes I find myself sickened by what certain people in our country are doing. Still, I prefer to think that our country is basically good. The U.S.A. is a lot more than just it's gov't, the news media and Hollywood; much as these three would like to think they represent the heart and soul of America.

I don't find it hard to believe that there is more to the French than has been stereotyped.

Default The French

The French people suffered horrendously under the Nazi occupation - that is well documented. The French Resistance
also provided extremely valuable service in hiding downed airmen, providing vital intelligence, and sabotaging the Nazi war efforts. By disrupting communications and transportation of the the occupiers at great risk to themselves and their families. Many paid a terrible price to assist in the Allied war effort. Many soldiers have expressed their gratitude of the efforts of the French people upon returning home.

After running into as many rude people as I did while in Paris I had to swallow some anger and remind myself that a visit to NYC is not much different.
