Default No Interest in Sports?

Is anybody else completely uninterested in professional sports?

I just got moved to second shift, and while the guys I work with are ok, they're sports fans and constantly talk sports, which to me is like watching a painting of paint drying dry.

I'd rather listen to Yoko Ono and Lady Gaga "sing" a duet of the teardown procedure for the LeRhone 9J rotary aircraft engine in Farsi than to hear five minutes of sports talk.

During down times, I just surf the shooting related message boards that the customer's guest WiFi doesn't block, on my phone and try to tune it out.

If we all fell in love with the same woman it would be a heck of a fight.

At the risk of being labeled an unbeliever, I've never followed the professional sports. I did go to a couple of Cardinals baseball games many years ago and I do appreciate the teamwork that makes a club perform.

With that being said, the local sanitation truck worker has a more profound and important impact on peoples lives than does a sports superstar.

Blowhard gym teachers cured me of that at an early age. Aspiring General Pattons with captive grade schoolers...

The truth is that you don't really need algebra to succeed in life, and that sports doesn't necessarily "build character".

All you've got to do is sign on that same old dotted line..."

Default i lkie mostly ....

college sports .

followed the celtics from years ago and watched my san fran giants become world series champions last year .

am a big I. U. fan ....both my kids went there but i followed them in roundball even before the generals time.

i DO exercise myself and suppose i like to dream about the goodold days when i was young and even a little athletic too..... but i still can hold my own in some respects . even had a 26 year old attractive girl friend for a bit !
but i am off the subject now ...sorry

but sports DO have their merit . and if it moves one to keep in shape some , well that cant be all bad.

but to have them shoved down ones throat all the time , well , no one really enjoys that ! it would be like talking guns constantly , too bor
ing and i like to think i am more well rounded than that .

i figured god was good to me last year tho ..... was at the indy 1500 gun show and bought a mod 686 4" nearly new condition for $250 and i got to share that last giant out in the world series so i figured it didnt get much better than that unless i can spend some more time with that same young lady ...
please excuse the rant

I'll occasionally watch a pro football or baseball game, more often college football, but really don't have much interest in sports, and zero interest in talking about sports. I always find it a little amusing when guys just assume that other guys are sports fanatics. If I wear a red shirt to work, I'm not wearing my "Cardinals shirt," I'm wearing a shirt that happended to be clean that day and happened to be red. I'm with Bat Guano re: the myth that sports build character. Not to overly generalize, but the jocks in school tended to be more delinquent than student population as a whole.

Another one of those guys most likely cured of any Sports enjoyment by an over bearing Gym Teacher. The guy was never happy with 90% of anyones performance...EXCEPT his little pets who took part in the various sports offered. It was so very obvious...surprising it was allowed.

My wife is a big SF Giants fan and I do occasionally watch the games but don't really miss them if I'm doing something else.

I can appreciate noteworthy performers as well as the hard work it takes for many of them to continue playing as they get older.

I can NOT understand the fanatics who literally mould their lives around various teams or multiple sports interests.

I don't like sports because i was forced to play them in high school.

I did run cross country, swim team, and i liked those but when it came time for football, baseball, basketball it was slammed in my head to try out and win.

To this day i won't play, watch or talk about football, baseball, basketball, yet i still love to swim and run.

Swimming involves just me and the water
5k runs are about the same once you break out of the pack.Just me and the road, along with my thoughts.

Funny thing is,after all these years my stepdad still finds fault in me not living up to his potential.

The problem with pro sports is that if you put all of the players in a hotel, no electronics would work because of the interference with the ankle bracelets.

Nope, no interested in sports here. The whole notion of spectator sports is contemptible.

Yoko Ono and Lady Ga Ga? Really?

That's pretty tough! You really don't like sports very much, do you?

Couldn't care less about 'em. Even less interest in hearing people talk about them, whether it be sports TV, radio, or just chatting.

Playing sports, yeah, that's fine. Rooting for a friend or family member who is playing sports, yup, good thing to do. But getting worked up about some dude you don't know playing sports on TV? Nope.

Same here, although I do regret never having been to the old Yankee Stadium. In the Summer of 2007, I attended several local Minor League Games, they were fun.

Never was a jock. Dad played baseball in High School but I failed miserably. Tried motor cycles then drag racing, not good at either. Discovered hunting & fishing, that's the way I go. Organzed sports are just that, organized to take your money.

For me, I am a manly man standing 6'3" and weighing 250. Been married multiple times and have three children. NEVER thrown a football, never played ball, seldom ever watched a pro game of any type (the exception being when company came over to watch SuperBowls or other game on my big screen tv.

Went through high school and college without playing sports. The closest I came was being on the swim team in my junior and senior yrs of high school.

Never cared about playing sports with the guys and cannot stand anyone that plays golf.

Now I love NASCAR races but that is a lot due to having other interests at the tracks.

While growing up in the Bay Area during the 70s I was a Raiders fan and went to a great many games. They had some real characters on the team, and knowing a bit about the behind the scene stories made watching football fun. As time went on and career began... I slowly lost track of the players and within a few years I didn't recognize the team. Once I lost the storyline of the players and team rivalries, just watching the game of football became uninteresting. I watch Washington (banned topic).... there are some real characters playing.

Again...agree with you 100%

BUT....

These guys make this kind of money because the team owners make enough money owning the teams to pay them. They are "worth" it in a business sense because the people paying them are making a profit off of the players. The reason why this is so is because people pay to watch them, and so on. It's called business. Why is water, a priceless resource without which we die so cheap while gold (which does nothing but "make us rich" whatever that means)is so expensive??

Does it make sense in an etheral way-certainly not. In a perfect world we would all be walking aroound naked eating from all the bountiful fruits available to us, there would be no war-unicorns would sing and it would never rain except at night. Nobody would be hungry there would be no need for guns and we would all stand around holding hands.
But that ain't happening now is it
So, in the mean time, Lets watch those football/hockey/baseball/bas'etball games, play golf, shoot forest critters, cut grass sweat, drink beer, fight, fish, and (ahem ) and generally do what we enjoy doing.

You could start naming professional sports teams and I'd be unable to tell you what sport they played 3 out 5 times. Maybe less.

Can't understand why grown men get so excited about watching other grown men chase a ball.

Yeah, I actually have no interest in professional, college, whatever sports.

Total waste of time, IMO. And professional athletes, for the most part, are pathetic role models and grossly overpaid.

My wife's ex-husband, who is really a nice guy, is obsessed with sports. He wears nothing but pro and collegiate hats, shirts and jerseys, plays X-Box sports games constantly, and watches every sporting event he can in person. I find it sadly ironic that he is a fat ******* who probably couldn't run 100 yards to save his life, so why the interest in athletics? If he watched the Food Channel all day long and wore a chef hat around it would make more sense.

I've often wondered why is sports considered news and why are people who play sports considered heroes? My dad and many others fought in WWII.They and all of the others who have been in the wars and conflicts of this country are the real heroes. Also, people who work in LE,firemen, emergency personnel, etc.I just don't consider someone who makes millions of dollars a year for bouncing, running,or hitting a ball a hero.

I enjoy baseball and follow the SF Giants. I also like to watch a hockey game but don't really follow any teams.
I could not tell you what any of the programs are on the big 3 or 4 networks, who hosts dancing with survivors or X nation's got talent to save my life. I have been known to spend a week in a hotel and not be able to tell if the TV worked or not. If I have a wi-fi linc for music and can follow baseball scores i am a happy camper. I also read books. Thanks Goodness it is a wide world and there is still room for everyone.
I would not force my opinions on others nor let theirs be forced on me in a work break situation. Sports are a lot more favorable topic than Religion, Politics and Sex in a work situation.

+1

I spent the past week rappelling/rafting/orienteering/etc. with 120 kids and had a blast.

But I'd rather have a root canal than sit in a room with a bunch of fat guys blathering about sports.

Zero interest in all team sports at all levels. My interests have always leaned towards mechanical things. Sports cars (british '50s & '60s), Aircraft (USAF jet engine mechanic '66 - '70). Motor cycles (H-D) & guns (S&W, Beretta, SIG)

My entire adult career has been in industrial manufacturing.

I enjoy a good grand prix race once in a while but can't watch NASCAR.

Cannot stand sports but do enjoy going to a little league team baseball game. Just something about the live event. When parents behave that is.

I played football and baseball in high school. When I graduated I found out that I am a very poor spectator. I would rather watch paint dry than set around watching some sporting event on TV and listen to couch potatoes give instant analysis. I have no interest and seldom even know what teams are going to be playing in the Super Bowl or the World Series.

In my lifetime I have been an active participant in Flying light aircraft, SCUBA, Desert Motorcycle Racing, Trap Shooting, Skeet Shooting, Indoor Galley Range Target Shooting, USPSA, IDPA, and Competitive Benchrest. I ride motorcycles of all sorts, hike, hunt and fish. I don't recall the last time I actually sat still and watched a televised sporting event. ................. Big Cholla

I like watching sports, probably mostly because I was good at playing sports and enjoy competition. It's all entertainment whether it's sports, comedy, drama, action or thumb twittling. It's just like any other industry. Most of what we buy is what we like not need. If everyone liked the same stuff most of us would be unemployed and the world would be a horrible place. A lot of people like stuff I don't care for but since it all creates a job market I'm all for it.

I doubt that a single player on the St. Louis Cardinals/Rams is from St. Louis. Nor the managers, coaches or owners. I'd feel some pride if a bunch of local boys won big.

I despise pro sports of all kinds. As far as I'm concerned if most of the so-called pros didn't have their particular talent, they'd be picking up our trash, dealing drugs, or be in prison. Sure, there are some exceptions, but not many. Many can't even carry on an intelligent conversation.

The drugs, strikes, prices, after hours activities, arrest records, and bloated salaries made me give up on most sports years ago. Not to mention that it galls me that most people can talk sports or entertainment stars while they don't even know who their elected officials are or what they are up to lately. Maybe I just listen to too much Neal Boortz.

I don't believe I've ever seen a thread on this forum with quite as much cynicism.

I was a pretty fair athlete in HS and I had some wonderful coaches. My Daddy was a good athlete, and now I realize how much enjoyment he got from seeing me and my older brother, who could not have afforded college if not for athletic scholarships, play baseball and basketball.

In my case, playing competitive team sports in HS was indeed a character building proposition. My coach didn't demand any more from me than I was capable of doing, but he did expect that level of performance. You know what? Sometimes I surprised both my coach and myself with what I could do.

My wife grew up on a farm in the 60s and 70s that could have just as easily been in the 30s and 40s. Her athletic ability was a vehicle for her to gain some recognition and have some good opportunities. She played in the first women's basketball game The University of Georgia ever played, as a member of the opposing team, a two year college. She transferred to UGA for her last two years, and has her name on a monument on the UGA campus prominently displaying the athletes who have been recognized as Student Athlete of The year. She was on scholarship, one of the first women scholarship basketball players at UGA, and it really helped her family with finances. Her daddy was a farmer and mechanic, and her mother a teacher. She had the same HS coach as I did. He was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame a few years back.

I used to be a fairly big fan of collegiate and pro sports. Now, I am only interested in the Braves. Actually watched them whip the Astros while typing this. I follow UGA to a much lesser extent. Sadly, too many college and professional athletes have garnered too much negative publicity, and the thug mentality of pro basketball and football have tarnished those sports.

Regarding salaries, some of y'all sound like you are falling prey to a little class envy. A person is worth whatever someone is willing to pay. As Caje pointed out, these talented people are making money for the owners, else they wouldn't get these salaries. These people are entertainers, and I figure they are worth more than most of the actors and singers. If life were fair, farmers would all be billionaires, because without them, we would all starve.

I have some interest in watching good sports - like the college world series. But I can't take these 24 hour sports channels arguing ad nauseam about who they think will win. Just let me watch the game - but I don't care what "the experts" think.

Really I could not humanly care any less about sports. My old lady LOVES Duke, but I really don't care.....she about had a heart attack when I worked the Duke Mens Basketball Banquet. Me? It was just a paycheck. I get paid to go work most Duke athletic events, but really, I don't care.

Professional sports?.......don't get me started......pure idiocy at its best.....

An interesting thread with a number of interesting attitudes expressed.

I believe cmort666's initial question concerned professional sports, but then his post seemed to be more focused on sports talk. I have little interest in sports talk, also; I will participate on occasion during family gatherings, but generally pay little attention.

Generally speaking, professional sports don't interest me much. There's something different about them; for some reason the games don't seem to exhibit the intensity that their college counterparts do, at least until the playoffs begin. Then I will get a little more interested, but only with football. That was the only sport I played in high school, and my Dad was a football fan; so some of his interest rubbed off, I suppose.

My largest interest is in Division I college football. I have fond memories of watching the teams coached by Bear Bryant, Tom Osborne, Darrell Royal(sp?), Barry Switzer, Ara Parsegian, and so on. Even so, I don't get nearly the enjoyment from watching unless I have friends or family watching with me -it's therefore somewhat a communal thing for me.

Other sports don't interest me much, and so I don't follow them. Baseball is too slow for my blood. I enjoy it more when errors are made and people are racing around the bases than when everyone performs as they're supposed to. The only basketball games I enjoy are the fast, high-scoring ones -which are fewer and further between these days. Ice hockey, in my view, is much more interesting when watched in person rather than on TV.

Re: ridiculous salaries, bad behavior, etc.: I understand how this can sour people, and to an extent it does me also; but I've somehow been able in many cases to appreciate a person's athletic ability even if he/she is a scoundrel of a person otherwise. For instance, I don't care for Ray Lewis, because I strongly suspect that he escaped punishment for a serious crime; but nevertheless I can still admire his superior ability as a linebacker and would vote for him for the Hall of Fame were I in a position to do so.

Sports a "character builder"? I think that that depends on the individual participant and his/her coaches. I think I may have learned a bit about the importance of perseverance in adversity while playing high school football. I was a four-year letterman, and thus did fairly well. But my school only won 6 games out of 38 during those four seasons, and many of the losses were by lopsided scores. Under such circumstances one needs to decide if he is going to keep hard at it or not.

Andy

I gave up on football when Dallas fired Tom Landry. I gave up on baseball when Wayne Huezenga sold all the players on the Florida Marlins team the day after they won the World Series. Gave up on Boxing when they let Mike Tyson back into the ring.

Haven't watched sports in years. Don't miss it at all.
