Talking First week in the new prison

Well I finished my first week at my new prison, still learning the system there. I conducted some Professionalism and PREA classes with the staff. It was a quiet week and I worked on bringing their policies and procedures up to date.

The staff there are friendly so far, I know most of them and the inmates for the most part went through the one I worked at in order to get here so they know my pet peeves.

The lady I am replacing retires on the 30th of the month so after that I won't be office bouncing and am trying to learn her system since it works I won't make many changes to rock the boat.

This prison is in the inner city of Milwaukee and has about 80 female inmates some on work release and some in AODA classes, it is a fairly new building the staff are a bit younger than the ones I left but they do a good job. I will get to know them better in the coming months as they will get to know me.

I told my new boss that I plan on being there for 4 or 5 years maybe longer, I have known her for a little bit I actually filled in for her captain a few years ago when she went in for surgery. She told me her expectations and I told her that I would do my best to follow them.

So far so good

Sounds good so far.
It's good to see you recognize things are well run. Sometimes a new guy comes in and wants to make changes just to have it his way or to show whos the boss.
Most people don't like changes to the routine, gets them out of their comfort zone. Working with them for some time and seeing what needs to change and making the changes over time seems to work better. Unless the place is a disaster from the start.
Good luck.

Good for you! That first week thing could have been rough, but sounds like you've got the right handle on it.
