So...he's still here and I put a collar on him and got him vaccinated. In ten minute car ride he can drool at least 5 gallons.

He's tired and happy today. Tired? Yeah, because someone has been playing with him and took him running.

One of the girls said something, and the Mr said well, that what happens when you own a dog. He tried to backpedal it, but I think he stays. Bear--still not sure about the Mr staying.

You really need to get the heartworm test done if you haven't already.

A dog like that should be pretty smart and easy to train. Just remember to be consistent, moderate in the tone of your voice, and give a command ONCE and have a way to enforce it, like a lead or leash.

Nope. Not a chance. If he was a beloved pet he would have been neutered, had his shots, not been 15 pounds underweight or dehydrated, not have a flea problem, been left outside alone all the time, etc. This dog had been in neglect for at least a year. Also, no kids in the house attached to his old yard, let alone any on the entire block.

heartworm test scheduled. just took him for a quick once over and the shots at the mobile clinic.

ETA: So we're sitting with him in the yard, and one of the girls said "You want me to go get you a beer? I saw you sitting out here drinking beer with him last night." Works for me.

OK, I read all the advice and knowledge you guys have about guns and it's reliable and trustworthy (I really do read it, but don't have much to share in that department) so I need some help with this dog.

he is really good and sweet tempered and smart. He's quiet and gentle. BUT he has one quirky thing that I don't know what to do.

Lawnmowers! Anytime someone is mowing, he gets a little freaky. He alternates between running in a figure 8 pattern (herding behavior?) and going up to the fence where he hears the mower and barks and jumps.

Where he was before, nobody cares. I live in suburbia where my neighbor doesn't like it if my sprinkler gets a little on his truck. I can't have this dog doing this.

So he started it today when the neighbor behind was mowing. I went out and I waited patiently to catch him, with all the running up and down the fence and umping it took a while. Then I held his collar and gently but firmly pushed his butt down and told him "Sit" and "quiet" When he obeyed, he got a "good boy" and some ear scratching. And he did sit and stay quiet for the most part, as long as I was there and holding the collar. If he tried to get up again, pushed his butt back down.

How do I work with him on this? It was fine as long as I was right there, but there are days--lots more coming up--when I won't be here to do that.

Does anyone else have a dog who does that running in a figure 8 at a loud noise? why do they do that? What is it? Were you able to train them to not do it? how?

You are on the right track. You need to keep up this training even if it means that you have to train him while one of your family members cuts your grass repeatedly until he "gets it". Make him sit, praise him and give him a treat, then walk away. He will follow you and start barking again. Make him sit and when he does, it's treat time again.
Over and over. He'll figure it out.

Does he do the same thing when you play that sax?

Border collies traditionally are used to move flocks of sheep in open areas, and it sounds very much to me like the movement you're describing is an instinctive response to what the dog perceives to be a flock. I raised sheep with my father growing up, and when a number of sheep are bleating, the continuous "baa" sound they make is not so different from that of a lawn mower.

The "8" pattern makes perfect sense; when your dog moves along the fence, he/she is right at the heels of the sheep and startles them enough to keep them moving. When the dog moves away part way along the fence, any sheep which has turned around and is headed the wrong direction is picked up by the dog, turned around, and kept moving the direction the flock is moving. That would be my take on it.

I'll let the experienced dog trainers here tell you how to break the dog of the habit.

No. It doesn't bother the cats either. The one time it did, I did it on purpose. he was being nosy and stuck his face in the bell so I gave him a good blast.

A Border Collie Warning

"A Border Collie in the herding "mode" is a dog that misses, forgets, or simply ignores all commands and no amount of pleading from the owner will work. Countless Border Collies are killed by cars every year because the dogs, when the instinct kicks in, are oblivious to almost all other external stimuli."

Not to say it is impossible, but it will require much time and patience to redirect his instinctive behavior. (It will still probably be easier than trying to train Shar Peis)

Somewhat over a year ago my brother in law was coming over to help me with some stuff. Door bell rings and he's standing at the front door with a pit bull terrier standing next to him. Open the door and both walk inside. I say nice dog you got there,he says I thought it was yours. Sort of a take off on abbot & costello who's on first type of thing. Dog walks over to me and I rub his head and he lays down at my feet. So after asking around I found out that a lady up the block had been keeping him due to the cold weather. So we decided to keep him. No chip or any identifing things. We get him chipped, licensed, and then found out he had heartworm. Well about $1000 later he ok.
I called him BOB. Well pitties like to roam. He got out a few times so we hop in the truck and go looking. Found him way the heck out in a cane field. Pull off the side of the road, open the door and here he comes. He got out once and we traversed the whole area. About 5am the wife hears this banging in the front of the house. There was Bob trying to devour the seal thing under the front door to keep out drafts.
My wife woke me up and asked what I would give to get Bob back. Anything was my answer. And here he comes jumping up on the bed like nothing was wrong. Bob get along with our other two dogs a chaweenie and chicuha (can't spell) two cats.
Had him checked by the vet and heartworm is gone. Stinks as a watchdog so I'll leave that to the other two. Was easy to house train and loves sleeping on the lounge back by the pool
which is totally fenced in. All in all a good dog and does not show any signs of viciouness and has become a member of our family. He weighs in between 85 & 90 pounds and loves to ride in my truck. frank
