Default Fathers Day...GREAT day....

I have my own challenges with my 20 year old son, but we are dong a lot better now, and I hope our relationship continues to grow...but he came to see me today and showed me the new to him 1999 Ranger pickup that he bought yesterday...and we hung out, took it for a ride (I gassed it up for him gladly) and had a good afternoon.....
BUT, this morning, I met my 78 year old Dad (Korea War Marine Vet) and I drove him up to Currahee Mountain in Toccoa GA of "Band of Brothers" fame.
We drove up the mountain, hearing the echos of the footsteps, groans and cries of those paratroopers who ran it every day..."3 miles up, 3 miles down"..we hung out at the top and took pictures and exchanged presents,.we then ate lunch and visited the military history museum in Toccoa...and then headed back...
I got to see my Dad, and my son....it made my day.....

My dad passed away in 2007, but I had breakfast with my daughter and did spend the day with my son and his wife. He made me some BBQ on his Big Green Egg and didn't try to talk me out of any handguns the entire time I was there. I love my kids.

Not too many of my friends my age still have our fathers. A few do, but most of us are the "old men" in our families. I was glad to be able to spend the day with my son. We pedaled across town to an old motorcycle/bicycle event that I have been going to for 35 years, since before my son was born. We used to ride our motorcycles there, but he hasn't been riding them so much lately, so we have been bicycling. A lot of my old motorcycle buddies seem to bicycle more these days.

Pedaling makes me feel maybe not so old, although the youngster has to be gracious about waiting for me at the top of the longer hills. He had worked late the night before, and when we got there, he broke out a bottle of ibuprofen. After we had walked around for an hour or so, I asked him if he had any more. He started laughing: "Pop, I was wondering when you were gonna ask. I thought you would need some right when we got here." Well, I got to bed earlier than he did last night, and in any case, standing and walking is a lot harder on my knees than sitting down and pedaling.

We passes a few pleasant hours talking to old friends and looking at oddball machinery. The crowd was pretty thick, and there was a lot of dreck there too. I ride BMW's but don't find them particularly interesting too look at, at least if they are recent enough to have disc brakes. Similarly, if a Harley newer than a Panhead goes by, my eyes glaze over, nor am I impressed by guys who dress up like gay pirates to ride their motorcycles.

I like the old Brit stuff, and the East European oddballs, like a Jawa 350 twin that looked like it dated back to the mid-'50s, from the cut of the seat. That and the crazy home-built stuff. One guy rode a Harley-powered trike laid out the right way, with two wheels in front to steer, and the single drive wheel at the rear. He parked it right next to the new white Can-Am Spyder, whose owner sort of wilted.

Neither one of us minded when my wife showed up with the sag wagon. We stopped at a place where we could sit outside for a barbecued chicken and some pulled pork, with corn bread, black-eyed peas, and greens, washed down with some locally-brewed beer. That was a fine Fathers' Day.

I had a good Fathers Day also. Heard from both daughters & my son. He forgot my BD yesterday & appoligized for that. Best thing I heard from my grandson tonight. Good kid, a real hunter & fisherman. He's 19 now & working & going to college. Watched "Stagecoach" again with John Wayne. For a 1939 movie it's great. Hope all of my friends had a good day also.
