There is an excellent article on how to tell genuine Ivory from fake Ivory at the Rock Island Auction site:

Wow. From nuts and milk to storing it with rotting meat. I had no idea. One I would be furious with and the other I would guess would stink to own. Very interesting read. The only one I knew about was the hot needle test.

Neat post. Now I can tell if some of my grips are real ivory. Thanks!

Don't know about Ivory, but my wife can tell a real diamond from a fake just by getting close to it

Bring it to the zoo and wave it in front an elephant...if he doesn't rear up, it's fake.

Not to beat a dead pachyderm, the author failed to mention that African ivory and Indian ivory are different. African has more of the distinct chevron pattern while Indian is much less apparent. I've worked with both and prefer African. Also the quality varies in degrees, bark to plain to degrees
of A to AAAA exhibition grade, much like fancy wood.

My favorite FAKE bonded ivory from Altamont:
They aren't the real deal but just so everyone gets the difference. The lack of grain and the sub gazillion dollar price tag help too... I haven't tried the hot pin on epoxy to see what it does.

Real ivory is illegal, plastic isn't. Unless it's ooooold ivory (It has wrinkles, easy to tell the difference.)

Not necessarily. The U.S. ban on imported ivory began June 5,1989. That wasn't so very long ago. Of course, the age of the elephant from which the ivory was procured will have a direct bearing on the age of the ivory. And ivory in and of itself is not illegal. Just the importation of it.

See "Fat toms" post. Legal ivory is redibly available though diminishing, thus $$$. Have fun cause you'll never get out alive, much like the pacyderm. We have an ill Eagle locally they've been trying to catch for two weeks. THATS Ill Eagle!
