Default .22 Mag Ammo Advice?

I just recently took delivery of a .22 magnum revolver. Being as I've never had a .22 MAG firearm before, what would be your recommendations for .22 MAG, (WRF), ammunition?

What I mean is which cheap .22 MAG ammo for target shooting/plinking and which game ammo for say taking critters down fast such as raccoons, opossums, etc.?

There is no such thing is as "cheap" .22 Magnum ammunition.

All I can say, is the Federal 50gr. shoots extremely well from my model 48 with a 6" barrel.

Thanks and I do realize that .22 Mag ammo is not cheap. The cheapest I've found is Winchester .22 WRF 45 gr. flat nose at 15 cents a round.

22 mag ammo is way too costly. Since you can't reload it, just buy whatever you can find that is the cheapest. Then load up on it if its on sale.

I have a buddy who bought one of the 22 mag semi-auto's. It couldn't feed a full magazine of ammo without a jam no matter what you did. We finally went out and bought one box of every brand/bullet style/bullet weight we could find. I went in halves with him and got to keep all the unused ammo. These days I've only got a 351, so my hearing isn't so good anymore.

You can do the usual stunt and take the different ammo samples you find to the range and test fire it at paper. Some really does seem to be more accurate than others, and some seems to be less dirty (but its all dirty.) It won't change your conclusion one bit. Buy the cheapest and live with it. Its still cheaper than shooting any factory centerfire ammo. But it won't compare with your own handloads.

OH, what to try a cool trick? Pick up your empties. Take them home and some evening when you've got nothing else to do, file, saw or cut the rims off them. Then fit them with 22 lr ammo. The thin ones work kind of good and form an adapter to fire 22lr in 22 mag guns! Not real accurate, but less noisy and worlds cheaper!

Default 22 mag ammo

Be thankful you have a revolver. I have an AMT automag II that I bought because the Automag III was so much fun... It started out as a "jam-o-matic". Could not feed a magazine without a jam. Went to the Jackson Gun show and bought up every brand I could find. If one of those didn't work.. I was going to get rid of it. It hasn't jammed with anything since. Go figure.. Cheap and 22 magnum do not belong in the same sentence.

Thanks for the above posts guys. I would NEVER buy a .22 magnum autoloader as I remember all the unsuccessful attempts of them from the '70's and even now.

One of the reasons I LOVE .22 revolvers, .22 bolt action rifles, lever action or even single shot .22 rifles is I can shoot whatever rimfire ammo I have whether it's sub-sonic, shorts or whatever.

Semi-auto .22 pistols or rifles have high limits of velocity that is required to cycle them correctly and you just can't shoot whatever you want in them.

So, thanks for taking the time to all that responded and I will just buy whatever is the cheapest...err, the LEAST EXPENSIVE!

Just want to be sure that you know there is a difference between .22 Magnum (Winchester Magnum Rimfire - WMR) and WRF (Winchester RimFire)..

I can't tell from your post!

OH, one more thing!!!! The .22 Magnum's are LOUD........please wear hearing protection.

I have had good luck with the Winchester DynaPoint ($7.99 at WallyWorld) and amazingly good performance and accuracy from Fiocchi solids, which normally run about the same for plinking, target and general use. I got a great deal on a brick of the Fiocchi at Cabela's last year, as I recall about $75 in one of their dry boxes.

The CCI Gamepoint and Remington Accu-tip have done well on vermin for me.

All this from a Savage 93 heavy barreled rifle. My only .22 Mag revolver (a Colt) went to college with my youngest son and never returned.

Ah, I didn't catch it as fast as Road Rat did.

There is some confusion about the abbreviations used for:

.22 Winchester Magnum rimfire (.22 WMR or .22 Mag)
and
.22 Winchester Rimfire (.22 WRF)

The .22 WRF is the old antique round that the the Winchester 90's and 61's were chambered in, and also Remington and Stevens chambered guns in .22 Remington Special (an identical round to the .22 Winchester Rimfire). The .22 Winchester rimfire can be shot safely in any .22 Magnum chamber because it is shorter, but it may not feed in repeating firearms.

The .22 WRF also is not commonly found in most gunshops, but is usually listed in the same columns on websites online. Just be certain of what you order, as no company will accept returns of ammunition.

Thanks for clearing that up and I don't know why I included WRF. I appreciate the responses and thanks for all your replies.!

Another post to mention the loudness. Whether target shooting or whatever hunting you'll use it for, wear something to dampen the truly ear damaging noise it'll make!

I shoot the lower velocity 22 WRFs in my 22 mags at times when full power isn't called for. The WRF ammo is also quieter. I chrony'ed some 22 WRF ammo last Fall, it was at or below normal 22 LR speeds.

I too have had good luck with the Fiocci .22WMR. Got some online somewhere for $6.99 on sale, so I bought a few bricks. Seems to shoot well out of all 3 of my 48's and my Anschutz 141m rifle. Great for pest control.

I have my Dad's AMT AutoMag II in .22 WMF and it runs just great...as long as it is clean and ONLY with Winchester ammo. My Marlin 25MN is a very accurate shooter in a rifle, too. I also have a Ruger Single-Six convertible that rarely gets any range time.

Sometimes you can find PMC .22 WMR pretty cheap and it is fair ammo. Nothing I know of likes the Armscor stuff from the Phillipines.

The Winchester Dynapoint seem to shoot best of all in my Ruger Single Six and it the cheapest that Wal-Mart has.
