King of the wild Frontier or Lion of the West
I just started reading the new biography on David Crockett, it is written by Michael Wallis, I liked his ealier book on Charles Floyd. So far this one is pretty good, I have always admired 'Davey Crockett', he was a good adventurer and explorer.
I know recently there has been a debate whether he surrendered at that Alamo but the fact is he still gave his life for freedom.

Hi:
How would it be known if Davy Crockett died fighting or surrended?
Was not all the alamo defenders killed and then the bodies burned?

I was rideing quad yesterday in the boonies and seen "Davy Crockett" carved in a tree!
There has been a intense campaign for many years now to discredit every american hero we ever had. I am positive it is by the liberal left.

Supposedly years ago someone found a diary belonging to a Mexican officer claiming that Crockett and 7 others surendered and were executed. Some historians claim it was authenticated and others say it was faked.
I myself believe the history I was taught, but as as was stated earlier there is always a campaign to bring down American Heros by some corners of the system .

I was about 8 or 9 years old when Walt Disney brought the Davy Crockett story to television... I still have some Davy Crockett toy guns and coon skin caps in my collection... Later, Dave

Hi:
IIRC the last "Alamo" movie with Billy Bob Thorton had Davy and several others alive after the battle but executed dispite pleas of several mexican officers to General Santa Ana not to kill them?

Congressman Crockett was one of Americas greatest heroes. He was the only congressman who tried to stop the Indian's trail of tears and he butted heads with Andy Jackson on that. It cost him his re-election but he stood his ground. He was truly a free man. I don't know how he died but he died fighting. Santa Anna was a very bad man and need a whoopin'. I hope you Texans never forget what Tennessee did for you. Santa Anna proclaimed himself the "Napoleon of the west" but he was toppled by the King of the Wild Frontier......and Sam Houston....and a few hundred Texicans and Tennessee Volunteers

David Crockett was one of those VERY RARE true statesmans of history. He was elected as a representative from Tennessee to the US Congress. Crockett spent his entire career fighting and defending real individual liberty and the abuses of the US Congress violating the Constitution. In a fury of anger, David Crockett rose on the Congress floor, in 1835, when Congress again was violating the Constitution, and cried out:
"Ya'll can go to hell, I'm goin' to Texas!"
A True Son of Tennessee and a Texas Patriot....

"I hope you Texans never forget what Tennessee did for you."
And two of the most famous Texans were Stephen Austin and Sam Houston, both born in Virginia.

I ordered a copy of that book from Barnes & Noble and it should be here in the next day or two. Thanks for the recommendation!
I just finished the book "Boone" by Robert Morgan. Very interesting biography about Danial Boone. One interesting fact was that when Boone returned from a 2 year scouting trip he came back to Becky and a six month old daughter.

Tha Alamo is like the Battle of the Little Big Horn-because only one side survived-and didn't file any after action reports-it has led to all sorts of speculation and legends. IIRC one of the woman survivors-Mrs. Dickson (?) said she saw Crockett lying where he fell-she said she recognized his distinctive cap.

One of Santa Anna's officers Enrique De la Pena wrote a book in which he stated Crockett and some others were taken alive but were then executed by order of the general. Other officers who wanted to show their dedication to Santa Anna thrust themselves forward and used their swords to kill the captives. He said they all died bravely without complaint or humiliating themselves. De la Pena termed it a base murder.

There are after action reports on the Battle Of The Alamo. They are in the Mexican National Archives...if they are in a controlled enviroment and weren't destroyed during the numerous wars and revolts, they are still there. I highly doubt that the Mexican government would ever seriously consider releasing them.
In short, the real truth of The Alamo will probably never be known...like the blade Col. Bowie had at his last fight...what it looked like is lost to history.
In either case the Alamo defenders one and all...were heroes and martyrs. When you look at the big picture, there was really only one bad guy at that battle: General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna...may he suffer unspeakably for all eternity.
