I have posted a couple of times before trying to impress upon people, especially the younger ones, of the dangers of too much sun. I won't try to list the problems that sun damage has caused for me except that I have had melanoma plus skin cancers too numerous to count, many resulting in surgery, some pretty painful. Because of the melanoma I have full body exams every three months.

Three months ago I had four pre-cancers and cancers removed. One month ago I had to make a special appointment because of a place that showed up on my ear. It was removed. Two days ago I went for my regular three months check and had five places removed and one frozen.

It is so important that you protect your skin from sun damage yet so easy to not think it worthwhile. It really takes little effort use sun screen and wear protection on you head and arms when you are going to be exposed for a length of time. It will keep you from much misery and pain in your later life.

Not trying to get into anyone's business, just giving you some hard facts hoping to keep you from making the mistakes that I made.

Great post, thanks. I hope that you overcome your health issues. Once in a while wise info sinks into people, hopefully yours does.

If I could go back and do things over, using more sunscreen and limiting intentional sun exposure would be one of the things I'd do. I've had a number of spots cut off. Youth is wasted on the young

Well it only has been a few years since they started warning people about sun exposure. My kids are 20 and 21. I try to impress upon them that your body is like a machine. You have to be careful what you put into it and how you take care of it. I tell them to make sure they come home to a real home cooked meal made from raw scratch ingredients by my wife, rather than eat frozen, preservative laced, artificial foods, including fast foods. They listen 1/4 of the time.

I am 48 at least when I was younger, my Mom was a "homemaker" who made sure we ate right.

I suspect a lot of the problem is due to changes in dress in recent years. I attended a fireworks show in a nearby town, I noted almost all the teenage and preteen girls-and quite a few of the "adult" ones-were wearing short shorts and trying to show as much skin as possible. When they're 20 they'll look "mahvelous"-and when they're 40 they'll look like Pruneface.

I agree it is a terrible, condition.
I do remember a wall poster in my dermatologist's office, it claimed 80% of the sun damage is done by the time one is 20. This seems to imply that the remaining 20% of the total lifetime damage will be spread out over say 50 years. (the Florida Dept of Health says 90% by age 18)
Seems not much one does as an adult would make a lot of difference. None the less play it safe, I do a lot of boating and fishing and usually wear long sleeve shirts, wide brim hat and sunscreen. A baseball cap won't do much for your ears or back of neck.
Good health!

That's a tough ride FM. Let's all hope it's over for a long while.

Thanks guys. I just got home. So far the surgery was a piece of cake, of course I am on a pain pill and a little in la la land. If any of you have been putting off surgery by cause of fear, quit it! Belive me it`s harder on our women than it is us! Right now my wifes ex is dieing in a vets hospital in idaho. My step daughter is up there trying to handle his affairs and it`s killing her! Sounds like he dont even know her. Prayers for him and her would be appriciated.

Thinking of others as YOU are recovering . . .

Doesn't surprise me a bit, sir.

Heal quickly, FM.

My prayers for the all of the family. My First Sergeant had skin cancer on his nose, they took some tissue from his buttocks for the skin graft. Then once everything healed he start growing hair on his nose in that one area!! Boy we gave him hell, but we were also glad he went in to get checked.

My first trouble showed december of 1985. Just a zit that wouldnt heal on the beak. All my younger life was spent outdoors but around 1967 I worked graveyard from then on. I did have many injureys to my nose prior to that. I was well scared up on the nose and the first spot was on a scar. Every proceedure I was told not to worry, the type cancer wasnt fatal. Every time they thought they had it. I would heal but maybe 6 months later something would show again. Once in awhile they would heal on their own but only temporary. I probley should have went every six months or so but didnt. I ended up getting another proceedure about every 1 1/2 year, about 13 in 22 years. The last time the doctor said I had 2 to 6 months if I didnt get the nose cut off. Seems there are openings through the skull and the cancer was ready to go straight to the brain through one. Maybe had I not been recently married and still single I might have took my chances. I am sure it was harder on theresa haveing to nurse me than it was me. I am suppose to wear a hat and sunscreen, truth is I seldom do unless I am rideing the trails. I am okay now, but like the old joke, "Had I known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself". I am 70. The wifes ex isnt quite 63. He has stage 4 cancer all through his body and brain, and we expect news every day from our daughter. Dont know what caused his. He also has always worked outside mostly as a destitute cowboy for some rancher. No matter how rough we think we sometimes have it, there are always many more have it a lot worse.
