Default Deceptive advertising

So I'm getting ready to take the plunge and but one of those fancy Yeti Ice Chests-the ones that will keep ice for 10 days(even though as my wife reminds me that the longest I've ever had an ice chest in the boat without adding ice was about 48 hours at the camp in the dead of winter ). Getting tired of replacing the Igloo's every 3-4 years.
Anyway, As I compare, and measure for the boat I come to realize that the labels regarding how many quarts are basicly being pulled out of thin air!!! After looking at the inside dimensions and taking a caculator to it and looking up on the net to find out that a liquid quart consists of 57.75 cubic inches, I made the fololowing observations:
Yeti 105 qt actually is 85.8 quarts based on cubic inch measurement
The Yeti 85 qt measures to 82.889 qts
The Yeti 75 measurews 65.038 qts
The Yeti 65 measures to 60.77922 qts

These are all the Tundra series.

I found an new old stock Yeti Roughneck 120 qt (the old Icey Tek) that measures in at 115.425 qts that is $125 cheeper than the "105 quart" Tundra above.
Same thing with the Engel Ice Chests-the biggest external dimension I can handle on my boat is the "80 quart" size which measures out to 70.077 qts for the same price as the old stock Icey Tek.
Looks like I'm buying the old Icey Tek!!!

Interesting exercise

Then you gotta deduct the thickness of all them there bottles and you will find that your cooler will only hold a 6 pack.
have a great day!

Yes, in fact! Of two Yeti ice chests, both labeled as 25 quart capacity, the "Roughneck" model has thick deep lid that intrudes into the oblong space of the interior. The other "Sherpa" model has a concave lid and somewhat different shape, and while it may have the same nominal capacity, I believe the "Roughneck" has superior insulation, especially because there's more of it in the lid. Both are excellent, and vastly superior to even my "extreme duty" Igloo. These coolers are sinfully expensive, but worth every penny if you need to hold ice for any extraordinarily long time. I still had ice cubes for cooling drinks after five days of what in most places passes for summer weather on Memorial Day weekend, starting out with 14 lbs. of cubes, 5 lbs. of CO2 (dry) ice, lots of ever expanding insulation as the cubes were consumed (to prevent/delay the C02 ice from sublimating). These super-coolers are a godsend when camping in 110 degree weather...!

It sounds like the ice chest measurements are displacement, not capacity.

Kinda a float your boat thing....

Indeed, you can buy a lot of ice for the price of these ice chests, but ... when you're in circumstances in which ice can't be replenished, and when the ice you start with is the ice you end up with, the ability to preserve it may be invaluable.

Over my long and now long-abandoned protests, the AZ Game & Fish Dept. has opened bear seasons ever earlier, so that now you may be hunting in August, when daytime temps are still approaching 100 degrees, in some hunt units. Kill a bear in these temps, and ice quickly becomes a very valuable commodity...

Sinfully expensive-but it's why you buy an M&P9 rather than a Hi-point.

It's an engineering problem, not a legal one. Volume is calculated in cubic inches not square inches.

Probably the same guy figures the size of coolers figures the size of 2x4s.
He's also, most likely, a big fan of Glen Close or his sister Glenn

Last spring I met a guy who was very happy with his, it was about 50 qt. I believe. I got the urge to buy one till picked one up in a store, they are very heavy even empty. Now when I load it up with ice and fish it would really be a job to move.

Man! Those things really are obscenely expensive, aren't they?

I'm in the market for a new cooler for the car. I go to shoots and am outside all day long. Sure, I can go in the Clubhouse and, if the line is not too long, I can get a Gatoraid or something else, but it's real convenient to have a cooler with water, sodas and whatever else in the car.

Even the smaller ones are out of sight on price. Techni Ice (if I got the name right), have some they CLAIM are better and a bit cheaper, but the smallest one I found was over $150 shipped.

I guess I'll just buy a bag of ice at the Stop N Rob each morning and use the old cooler.

Bob

But where else can you get a cooler that's Grizzly Bear proof....haven't you seen the Yeti commercials on the Outdoor Channel ??

You never know when one of those pesky bears may want to steal your beer.

FWIW I've had some old pros at keeping things cold in a cooler tell me it's the dead air space that heats up and melts the ice. A piece of bubble wrap the size of the cooler over the top pf all the goodies really helps and takes up little space.

I agree that Yeti's product names are deceptive. I've been doing more research into their sizing compared to other brands and I came across this guide that shows the "true quart" sizes of their coolers compared to Pelicans.

I wouldn't buy a Yeti or a Pelican cooler because of the weight, but I gotta tell you, the $30 I spent for a Yeti Colster (the can cooler) is the best money I've spent in years. Your beverages stay cold and frosty until you finish them . . .

I've never understood the need for a cooler.

Beer never stays in long enough to get warm.

If you need a $30 beer coosie to keep your beer cold while you are drinking it-you need to practice your beer drinking

I think the "size" given is total volume of the entire cooler (outside dimensions) rather than interior volume. I'll bet that if you do your calculations using the exterior dimensions you'll find they are much more accurate.

Though logically they SHOULD be rated based on interior or storage capacity, giving the exterior dimensions as the "size" makes for better marketing...

Y'all need to check out the Coleman Extreme line of ice chests. They will hold ice for 5 days, are widely available, and you can buy 4 or more for the price of 1 Yeti. They may not be grizzly-proof, but nothing is except height off the ground. I put a high-density, white plastic, cutting board on top of mine, as I knew it would be sat/stood upon and that would destroy the lid. I drilled it and the cooler for nylon bolts, washers, and nuts, and bedded everything with 3M 5200. I have had it now 15 years and it is still going strong. I don't abuse my stuff and it lasts a good while.

I have no need for a super-insulated cooler, especially one with the price of a Yeti. I've used a Coleman for over 25 years, is still in the same condition it was 25 years ago, except for missing the original drain stopper plug (replaced it with a cork). By the way, just why are Yetis so expensive?

Shipping them in from the Himalaya region costs money.

I don't have a yeti cooler, but do have a yeti coffee cup. My wife will not use it, she says it takes over an hour before she can take a drink from it. It normally tales me about 2 hours to finish and the coffe is still hot.

I have used it for ice water, I can't sleep unless I know I have a water bottle by me to drink out of at night. In the morning there is still ice in the water. They are expensive but do work, thankfully mine was a gift so I didn't buy it.

I have a Yetti 105, it sits in the back of the boat. I put ice in on Saturday and have cool water on Friday. It does sit in the sun uncovered, and I don't have it full of stuff. The old igloo cooler would be all water in a day and a half, hot inside by Friday.

I did get a few things to go with it, cup holders, a tie down kit and still waiting for a cushion.

Its well built I can stand on it, we use it as a seat, a table etc. It has great feet and it does not slid around at all. I bought the tie downs so it can be strapped to the swim platform.

I am happy with it I would buy it again, but I might take a closer look at the Pelican brand.

Put this Yeti in your Yeti Cooler. Cool it down. Then enjoy it. You'll soon stop worrying about the volume of your cooler. If you haven't tried Great Divide's Yeti Imperial Stout I highly recommend it.

I have a Yeti 30oz tumbler, it is hands down the best for keeping my iced tea cold like it was freshly poured from the fridge even after several hours. It was cheaper at Bass Pro than on Amazon.

Caj, I noted that you use dry ice. You may know to seal it as best you can. Not insulate, but seal from air. It doesn't thaw, it evaporates.
A vacuum sealed bag would be perfect. Otherwise a couple of heavy trash bags with the air pressed out and sealed as much as possible will keep your dry ice as long as possible.
An old friend in the dry ice business taught me a couple of tricks.

When did ice become so expensive it requires a $200 cooler to keep it?

We have an Igloo Marine cooler that's at least 30 years old. It might not hold ice for a week, but it will keep it from Friday night to Monday night on a long weekend. It's been camping, boating, fishing, hunting, and once held more than a case of champagne at a friend's outdoor wedding reception, with all the bottle standing up. Big blocks of ice last longer than cubes, and the more volume of food and drink inside, the longer everything stays cold.

Research and development.

Also white collar bear engineers are pricey.

The Yeti union in Nepal is very poweful. You wouldn't believe what they get per hour.

Default Coolers

Have you looked at thr Orca brand? I didn't measure mine for truthfulness in sizing but they are excellent coolers and a little less pricey than the other premium models. Also off subject but I'm dying to hear the rest of the stoey on the Exorcist prank.

Certainly as an educated man of the world, the fact that advertising is deceptive should come as no surprise. The only thing that surprises me about advertising is those rare instances where it is actually honest in what it claims. It would be amazing if our governments would actually do something to correct false advertising, rather than controlling the times when children may go out trick or treating.

Yeti themselves doesn’t list the quart capacities of their coolers - on their size & capacity page on their web site they only give the x,y,z inch dimensions of the cooler's interiors and not the calculated volume. But they choose model names that might well be quart capacities (but aren't), and because coolers in the US are usually named for their quart capacities, Yeti is taking advantage of that learned assumption on our part and lead us to deceive ourselves about their quart capacities. Clever.

Here in New Braunfels I got to watch a large Yeti float down the Guadalupe river during our 15 ft. flood surge yesterday. People commented on the poor sap who lost it. That seemed to pale a bit when the 30 ft. RV went by.
