Red face Another Gun Shop Experiance

Hi:
I was in my LGS (only one in the area) talking to an employee when a young man came in the front door waving a large military bayonet over his head. He loudly said "I am going to kill everyone in here!"
I turned to face this young man and said, " you are real stupid bringing a knife to a gunfight!".
The employee shouted " Put it down, this man doesn't know you!"
It turned out that the foolish young man is a regular customer plus a joker.
My "Pucker Factor" was at 100%.
My main thought in this encounter was "Double Tap to chest first-Then double Tap face/head".
I left the shop and haven't returned (Yet).
I was reminded of the Elvis song "All Shook Up".

Jimmy's "mistake" was talking, not shooting...sort of. It was lucky for the dummy with the bayonet (and Jimmy that he wasn't COMPLETELY nutty).

Jimmy,

I'm glad that you had the sense and time to evaluate the situation a little bit before shooting this guy.

Yeah, he's an idiot...but we've all done stupid things in our lives.

I imagine it would be hard going to sleep at night knowing you killed somebody that was playing a joke.

Good work, Sir.

A lot of jokes are stupid. Jokes that could get you instantly shot fall in the same category as Russian Roulette. BEYOND stupid.

Reminds me of the time I was helping resolve a barroom incident...off-duty at the time.

Two knuckleheads resented the fact they were bounced from the bar; kicked a hole in the glass door on their way out. As they were being helped along (NO blows exchanged) one said "go get the gun."

Believe me, getting the gun was very soon the last thing on their minds.

You just don't joke about such things.

Be safe.

Is this for me, Bob? If so, "Terroristic Threats," and "DisCon" are among the charges that could be considered. In the instant case, county police happened upon the scene, and dumb guys were ToT'd to them.

Yes, their vehicle was searched; no gun(s.) No charges were filed...yes, that includes the damage to the door.

Be safe.

Okay, I'll answer this one.

A LEO would be just fine as would (likely) the "perp" if clearly just a joke.

e.g. Once was in position to effect a felony stop (and did so) following the report of a driver pointing a "gun" at another vehicle. Problem was it was a plastic toy alligator (you cannot make up stuff like this!) that the "perp" pointed at the other guy following a traffic dispute.

Once, again, however, no one thought it funny until after the stop was over and the alligator was revealed.

Be safe.

Of all the places to pull a stunt like that, a gun shop, in the South is not the place to even think of doing that.

People, including myself, are much more aware of the possibility of something happening as the joker was suggesting. More aware to the point of being a little jumpy. I think I have thought differently about my own personal security and the security of those around me since 9-11.
I did not have my usual weapon in the car on that day and I won't forget how downright naked I felt on the 25 mile ride home.
You did good because even if you could have shot the poor kid and not gotten in trouble, he still was just making a really stupid joke.
Be safe sir,
Gordon

My Mama tells a story about when my older brother was 15, and learning to drive. He had to go off the road one time, 'cause another driver changed lanes on him. My brother cussed a little, sayin', "I had the right of way. I should have stayed there and let him hit me. It would have been his fault. I had the right of way." Mama told him, "Yes, it would have been his fault, but your car would still be wrecked."

If the idiot came in waving a knife and announcing "HOLDUP", and you killed him, you might not get charged. Even if they did charge you, they would probably drop it. After all, it would be his fault.

But he'd still be dead, and you'd still be the one that shot him.

Quick action by the gun shop employee is what saved this situation. I believe he should have a heart to heart talk with this idiot about doing things like this in the future. If he keeps doing this foolishness it's just a matter of time until someone lights him up like a Christmas tree. And that will NOT be a joke.

We simply can not assume that someone brandishing a weapon and threatening to kill; is just playing a joke.

And??

This does not present a problem for me. I'm not an internet tough-guy or sociopath, but sometimes a person pays for their stupidity with their life.

In the not-too-distant past, this was an accepted norm. Nowadays stupidity is allowed to flourish, and society pays for it in many ways. This time the dummy got off light, but if he continues this irresponsible behavior, it's only a matter of time before his guardian angels go out for coffee when he needs them the most.

Really does my heart good to know that this immature dolt is a "regular" at the gun shop. We need more of his ilk representing gun owners as responsible...NOT!!!!!

Default It ain't so easy

As to the "Oh well, he asked for it" mentality expressed by a few, that may work for you intelectually, but in the real living it out, it's not so easy, before or especially after the action is taken, and can not be re-thought, but usually is, for long periods of time. There is about 2% of the general population who have little of these second guessing after thoughts, or lack of restraint about taking another persons life, in a life and death, "kill or be killed" situation. The rest of us fall into assorted sub-groups, with the great majority finding it hard, if not impossible, to take another human beings life, even in a combat situation in the military. An extreme case would be that horrible war the pitted brother against brother, the so call American Civil War. There were 1700 unfired rifles picked up off of the Gettysburg Battlefield-some of them had been re-loaded many, many times, but NOT FIRED! A good read for anyone who wants to learn what has been documented about human beings killing other human beings is a book titled, "On Killing." It's a real eye opener, and we need to have them opened to all of the truth, in my view. One of several very poignant things that Sec Bob Gates said in his comments as he prepared to leave the office of Sec. of Defence was that he had found out that ALL of the Doves wore uniforms. Flapjack.
