They arrested the killer.

Norway: 'At least 87' killed in terror attacks - Telegraph

Terrible shooting in Norway but the Yahoo AP story does not help. Do you agree that the following is pretty stupid but somewhat normal of the press.
"Ballistics experts say the so-called "dum-dum" bullets also are lighter in weight and can be fired with greater accuracy over varying distances. They commonly are used by air marshals and hunters of small animals. Such characteristics potentially would have allowed the gunman to carry more ammunition and fire his weapons at varying targets without adjusting his sights."

Yeah, it's getting a lot of coverage here, too. Of course the first thought was Muslim terrorists, that's just the way things are today. So he has fundamentalist Christian leanings? Any more word as to why he did it?

There are more traces which leads to the political right-wing than to a religious group.
They say that the shooter is Neo-Nazi and this groups hates
the socailists / left-wing-politic. He killed young people who
were on a camping-event, which is organized from the socialist-
party of Norway.

Rudolf Hess's body was recently exhumed and either destroyed or secretly located. The grave sight had become a pilgrimage of sort for Neo Nazi's.

What a terrible massacre. How can anyone be so evil.

I don't do prayers, but my thoughts are with the families and friends of all the victims.

Let me see if I got this RIGHT,Neo Nazi hates socialism.Wasn't that the first step to fascism?
I think he was confused.I know I'm confused but I guess thats the way it was designed.Lets blur the lines between liberal and conservative and call left right and right left.Works like a charm.

CNN is reporting 85 killed on the island - he was able to continue shooting for 90 minutes. Those who tried to swim away were shot in the water.

I suppose Norway doesn't have concealed carry...

The chief of police's explanation for the delay:
"There were problems with transport to Utoya," where the youth-wing of Norway's left-leaning Labor Party was holding a retreat, Sponheim said. "It was difficult to get a hold of boats."

The police subsequently leapt into action and arrested on of the bystanders who was carrying a pocket knife.

A man is taken away by police, who told members of the media as he was loaded into a police car, that he had been carrying a knife, shortly after Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg arrived at a hotel in Sundvolden, Norway, to meet survivors fro

There are people in this country who think those of us who cc are paranoid. The potential in the US for something like this is very real. The shooter in Norway had 90 minutes to kill people. What might have changed had just one person been carrying? We'll never know, but I for one won't rely on people who say "but it could never happen here". Wrong. It could happen anywhere.

If he was a "Neo Nazi" it doesen't make a lot of sense that he hated socialists. Since the word Nazi was just the short term for "National SOCIALIST German workers party."

Two thoughts on the above comments:

Don't bring him over here, we don't want the Europeans in our business and we certainly don't want to be in there's.

Second, many of our left leaning courts would coddle this guy as much as any socialist court in Europe.

You and I both know it could happen anywhere. Ninety minutes before response is unthinkable in the US.

I know from my own experience though that it is easy to draw down on the wrong person. I did it with good reason but I drew on the good guys and not the bad guy. Fortunately I did not fire.

It would be entirely to easy for the permit holder to see someone shoot and think he was getting the bad guy when he may be shooting a LEO that is stopping another offense.

While all for every qualifed persons being armed, it is best to correctly assess the situation before opening fire.

In the Norway incident, it should not have taken long to figure out who was a bad guy.

Huh? I thought police services had access to boats...if not them then the fire service...or the military...or commandeer a civilian vessel.

That comment makes NO sense whatsoever...

I don't care WHAT he claimed as an ideology, he was an evil, demented person. Simply a mad dog amongst us.
Trip the trap, and let him swing in the wind till the birds are done with him.

I really don't care if someone wishes to be an agnostic or atheist, or whatever they wish to call their beliefs. We don't allow them to be ridiculed or goaded here, but people with other beliefs will be extended the same courtesy.
Likewise, we keep preaching and proselytizing off the board.

You seem to have trouble with a lot of views commonly held on this board.
Perhaps another place on the net would make you happier. If you have a need to expound an anti-religion or left wing agenda, take it somewhere else, and we'll all be happier.
Need any help, I'm your huckleberry.

A talking head on TV said that the 'only' way to prevent this sort of thing was to get people to be more willing to report on the odd actions of their neighbors.

After all, that's why things like this don't happen in Israel.

He apparently was not totally alone, although he may have done all preparations alone and may have been sole actor in the explosion and shooting. He wrote (apparently with assistance) a 1516 page manifest and sent it to many politicos in Norway. Manus is said to describe extensively his preparations, etc. I have yet to see much about this in English-language news. Here is link to one Norwegian new media report, in Norwegian. Sendte ut ideologisk bokmanus én time fřr bomben - Norge - NRK Nyheter Those of you that read Norska can sample bits from that document in NRK's article.

English Language title is "”2083 – A European Declaration of Independence"

It is clear that he is a 'bit' deranged.

There is also article in Swedish Aftonbladet, in Swedish. Mördarens manifest skickades till politiker | Nyheter | Aftonbladet and in main Stockholm daily Dagens Nyheter has article with rubrik "Manifest describes attack" Mördarens manifest beskriver attentaten - DN.SE

Waiting to see what is in English language news media in USA, England.

Anyone for more gun control?

I'll give it two weeks and we will have the UN pushing for world wide gun control and getting free press fron our media and backing from our government.
Perfect time to sweep "Fast & Furious" under the rug.

Let's be fair, though. If the shooter had been a left-wing nut-job, with a left-wing agenda, we'd have heard no end of comments here about how that person's actions made the case that the left-wing agenda in itself was nuts, wrong, immoral, etc. Now we are hearing that this guy was a right-wing nut-job, and everyone is silent.

Unless of course the gun was sold by an Arizona FFL.

OK Lets be fair,How is a Neo Nazi right-winged?Other than uninformed people confusing their terms.I consider my self mostly on the right.I don't hold any beliefs that a Neo would. It has become a description used to make the conservative "right" look like a "Nut jobs" and with great success as can be seen here."Left-Wing Socialist" have more in common with Neo's.

Maybe we should call him what he is,A Confused Nut Case.

Hold on, one complicating fact. This gunman was dressed as a policeman... There is at least one pic of him walking along past bodies on the ground and he is clearly dressed in police clothes. They said he bluffed his way on the island by showing up in uniform and presenting a (fake) ID that they people there ordered a boat to take him to the island. Once on the island, he called all the teens in under the pretense he had important things to say to them; then he started shooting and stalked them across the island shooting them.

So, the problem here is, if a hypothetical CCW holder was there, do you shoot at a man dressed as a policeman? Sure, when you visually see him shoot kids, then it's easy to make that call, but that's only AFTER you see him do it. If you come around the corner to investigate shots fired and screams and then see a cop, I don't think you shoot. Tough call. Impossible situation.

Obviously, what you said is correct. "it is best to correctly assess the situation before opening fire."

Let's leave politics out of this. Anyone who tries to impose an ideology upon the populace, whether left or right wing, by terrorist means is no less than a monster. The shame of this is that he'll only serve 21 years or less. The maximum sentence in Norway.

Norway has very strict gun laws and no CCW.

I will speculate that he gets 21 yrs per victim. Each victim would be another charge. If the guy gets 21 yrs per victim, he will not live long enough to serve the full amount of time possible.

Here is link to English-language article in CNN.com this morning, describing what is in the Norwegian-language manifesto, written by self-confessed murderer Anders Behring Breivik, the suspect in the Norwegian terrorist attacks.

From my research, its 21 years total. But Norway does have a clause, if they believe the person is still a danger then he can be incarcerated an additional 5 years. They can tack on as many '5 years' as necessary.

Haven't time to read this whole topic. Have they said which gun(s) he used to shoot that many people?

Which sidearms are most carried by Norwegian cops?

I have an Internet friend in Norway, but she doesn't know zip about guns. Great wildlife artist, though.

To answer question about guns used, as best I can without digging through a bunch of confusing information, is that one is Glock (no comment about caliber, presume 9mm), one or two long guns, variously referred to as "shotgun", "auto" rifle. Machine pistol is apparently in error. He was member of an Olso Pistol Shooting Club, which appears to have been a needed step to getting permit for Glock.

One of today's NRK articles about this reports that sections of Breivik's manifesto are taken word-for-word from USA's Unibomber, without citation or even mention of Unibomber's name.
Massedrapsmannen kopierte «Unabomberen* ord for ord - Norge - NRK Nyheter
(Mass Murderer copied "Unibomber" word for word.)

After all, that's why things like this don't happen in Israel.
I would imagine that the fact that every household in Israel is an armed household also has something to do with it not happening there.
