Default Shipping problem

I have a pickup truck gas tank, an exhaust pipe and a heat shield that I need to ship to an expert in these things.

How would one send this? All the stuff was on a truck that caught fire and burned after an impact.

Boxing it up would be almost impossible.

Not sure how one would band it up on a pallet.

Does the freight companies just take the items and put labels on it before shipping or am I supposed to do this?

Never had a situation like this before. Please remember this is evidence and there has to be a chain of custody maintained as well.

You will probably need to crate the items for shipping, but I foresee a larger problem, the gas tank undoubtedly contains gasoline fumes which cannot be completely purged, making it a very effective bomb. It will probably have to be shipped as ha-mat with special handling. Not sure how to maintain a chain of evidence, though.

Why couldn't something like this be sent by way of a private courier? If it is a day's trip or less, just one person could be responsible. Would they have to be bonded for this work? There must be a way. It will be interesting to know how you get this done.

These items are burned up. The metal is twisted beyond belief. The heat shield looks more like wadded up tin foil. The gas tank is burned so bad, it would not hold anything. Any and all vapors went up in flames for about a half hour, just about the same as the driver did.

It is the job of the expert in such to say exactly what went wrong to cause such a fire. I can give speeds, angles and the like but I am not an expert in metals.

It would be a day trip each way. Counting miles, it would likely cost $500 for someone to drive it down there and another $500 to bring it back in a couple of weeks.

Maybe this might work. Go to a grocery store and get the pallet and box that they sell watermelons out of. The cardboard is really tuff. Now you have to find a top. Don

Build a crate if you have to, that this stuff will fit in and ship it by freight line.

How do you ship this and maintain chain of custody? You won't know who is handling it.

Okay, just rambling here.

Buy a paddlelock with two keys. Mail one of the keys to your expert. Once he reports that he has the key, rent a U-HAUL truck and hire a bonded driver. Load the truck and lock it with the paddlelock. Note the time of day that the driver starts toward his destination. Your expert at the other end receives the truck and notes the arrival time. He unlocks the truck and unloads the evidence. Bonded driver returns the U-HAUL truck.

I have no idea what that would cost.

Are you kidding? He charges $250 just to read an email. Great man. Wonderful to visit with. Entertaining. I suggested to a man I dealt with that he should hire CajunLawyer to do an expungement for him. Not sure what price Cajun quoted the man but the guy said he could live with the mark on his record cheaper.

The items I need shipped is going from north Louisiana to west Texas.

A cheaper way would be to hire me to carry it over in my own truck. I am in possession of the things now. For about $250 a day, I would carry it to the expert. But we have mileage to consider. My truck gets about 10mpg and the round trip would be about 700 miles. So we are now looking at $800 or more. Once there it is the experts problem to get it back to the local area.
The only flaw in the soup here is the powers to be will not allow me to leave the area for two whole days. I have to go to Baton Rouge for a half day on business and they are screaming at me about it and they are the ones that are sending me.

I am thinking by sealing it to prevent tampering, the commercial carrier would be named as PIP until it reaches the delivery destination.

Building a crate would work but then there is a weight factor to contend with.

Using a cardoard box on a pallet would be great but how do I cover the top to secure it?

See if they make one of those PODS small enough to fit in a pick up, or at least on a large utility trailer. Seal it in there and then pay some college student to drive it over. Mail the key to the expert so he can open it and do his thing-then reverse the procedure to get it back.

As far as the expungements go, I could do them for free and it would still cost the poor guy $550.00 in Court costs-seems like everyone who touches it has to get a taste
