Some people just have no brains!
Was at the local Giant Eagle (GET-GO gas station) redeeming my fuel perks (I got 30 gallons for $1.189 a gal), and was on my knees filling my gas cans. A lady (mid 50's) pulls up to the pump's other side in a newer car, gets out and starts pumping gas. While we are both filling up, she empties her ashtray into the garbage can right besides the pump. I saw smoke coming out of the ashtray! She pours it into the fill can, and hangs up the nozzle ad goes inside. I have finished filling my cans so I stand up only to notice the garbage can is smoking! I immediately grab the window washer wand and start dumping water into the can, and after 8 or 9 times the smoke stops. She comes out and I tell her what she did, and to go inside and tell the attendant. She does, two come out, and change the trash bag. After she drives away the one kid goes "Some people are so stupid!". I just agreed and put my gas cans in my car and left.
Smoking is one thing, almost blowing up the entire station is another. What a MORON!

Shame on you folks! You're just being to hard on those unfortunate ones who on the day brains were handed out, they thought they were calling "rain" and ran for cover.

No, they thought they said "trains" and said, "I don't want one since I don't know how to run one."

A War Story:
One Sunday afternoon on patrol I came on a disabled vehicle. Four occupants inside. Reason was "Out of Gas". Everyone inside was without funds. By the appearence of the four occupants I didn't want them "Lingering" in my county. I drove ten miles to the nearest gas station and purchased five gallons of gasoline. Returning I inquired if anyone could pour the gasoline into their car. Finally one gentleman got out and started to pour the gasoline. I obseved that he was pouring the gasoline with one hand and holding a lighted cigarette in the other hand. After taking cover behind my patrol vehicle I yelled at him to put out the cigarette, which he did. I then escorted the four gentlemen into
the next county and bid then "Good Luck".

During a power outage due to one of the hurricanes a few years ago I stopped at a friends house to see how he was doing. He was filling the tank of his gas powered 6KW portable generator, with the thing running. I couldn't believe it and told him it was a very bad idea, the thing had been running for hours and was hot. "I do it all the time" he tells me. Lucky guy, and one who should know better, he is always messing around with cars, and boats! Like they say "familiarity breeds contempt"

Years ago, my late brother's father in law, who was never mistaken for Albert Einstein, started a charcoal BBQ fire. After it was going, he decided it wasn't strong enough, so he squirted a strong stream of lighter fluid into the fire, with predictable results. The fire not only intensified, it went up the stream of flammable fluid, into the can, and blew up. The idiot pretty much went up in flames. My brother had retreated from the area when he saw him pick up the can and start pointing it toward the fire, so was not touched by the flames, and was able to put him out. Third degree burns over almost 100% of his body. He still insisted he did nothing wrong, it was just a freak accident. Some people never learn. My brother was lucky to get out of that family a few years later - divorce is sometimes a good thing (that general intelligence level seemed to run in that family, fortunately, no kids from that union).

I have two similar almost unbeliveable storys. The first one was back in 1960. I was working at a helio port in sequia national park on a huge fire. We had a big batch of choppers comeing and going. I did a double take when I seen a pilot gassing his bell G-2 with it running and popping fire through the exaust, belive it or not, he was puffing trying to light his cigar on the exaust fire as he was pouring gas in the tank! All of the sudden it blew, he threw the can on the ground, there was a blanket of fire all around and under the chopper. I was on it with a bottel immediately, probley another guy was too. We immediately got it out and I dont think the chopper was damaged.
On the other deal I was working on a power pole at a small village in northern wisconsin in 1964. A tanker was pumping at a filling station/bar. I heard the driver yell at me about 60 yards away, looked up and saw smoke and fire on the side of his tanker. Hey, ya got a fire exstinguisher, he yelled! I was working out of a obvious utility truck. I was dumb in those days, grabbed my extinguisher, ran over and put out the fire on his pumping motor hanging under the truck. When I got it out I was thinking I sure was dumb, and saw the driver walking back towards me, he must have did a 100 yard dash to get away from a sure explosion! He walked up and just said, ive had trouble with that motor and used up my extinguisher on her the other day! He never thanked me and I walked off. I bet that village center and me could have went up. God looks after fools!

I guess we need to close this thread before it gets out of control. I bet everyone does something without thinking every once in a while.

Heck, I think this is a made up story, since all the smokers I see driving flick their butts into the street instead of using their ashtray. After all, they wouldn't want something that nasty in their car.
