What Else Lives in Your Gun Safe In Addition to Guns to Keep Your Kids Safe?
In another thread there was discussion about storage of guns in safes. Someone mentioned they store jewelry in theirs. I began to think about another item that I have added to our gun safe.
I take prescription pain killers & I have teenagers & grandchildren in & out of my house.
I take some of the popular party drugs (vicoden, hydrocodone, percocet, darvocet, etc. you get the idea). The bulk of these drugs are stored in my gun safe. I remove the pills a few @ a time for my consumption, when I need them.
When my kids teenage friends are around, "Out of sight, out of mind, No temptation!" is my motto. And most of "the danger" is what gets in the grape vine at school. "Blank's mom takes thus & so." This information gets around & school & next thing you know is some school kid is breaking into my house to steal the drugs because they heard through the grapevine. . . I hope the grape vine includes "they are kept in the safe".
I have introduced some people to guns & shooting. When I talk to others about the safe storage of guns, I include this information to enhance & help assure that my intent is for my house to be safe for everyone. I have found that it does help because many of these people never thought that homes are much safer for everyone if these drugs are stored under lock & key.
Safety first.

Not a bad idea. I'd been looking for an excuse to crossbreed the liquor/gun cabinet...

Small delicate things. Binoculars, compasses, Walkie Talkies and things that need low humidity like first aid kits and fire starting equip.
Peace,

additional items
It's a good place to store car keys and liquor when you have teenagers
and there friends over when they know your at work all day.
Also good for passports and legal papers.
I've threatened to lock my daughters cell phone in there, that always gets their attention.

I've always said,"Guns and drugs belong together".
Joking aside I have no kids running around but if I did I'd lock up the drugs.
I just caught my dog/kid stealing a pack of gum out of the wifes purse so maybe the gum needs to be locked up.Heck a little lockup for the crook might be in order.

I keep papers in there that I don't want to lose. Car titles, life insurance, appraisals on my Wife's wedding ring. If I want to put something away and not have to worry about forgetting where it is, I put it in the Zanotti.

In addition to titles, deeds, important papers and such, mine holds knives, clips old-old ammo boxes for decoration, elk ivory, expensive scopes looking for a rifle, wedding pictures, camcorder, old coins and paper money, grandpa's watch, check blanks and my kids penny collection. What the wife has on her shelf is her business.

Keeping kid safe? Good luck, I put my kids in the safe if i thought it would work.
If you put your Tobacco, Alcohol and Firearms in the safe would it then be a BAFT safe? Throw in money and drugs- DEA?
I find the best strategy is to teach your children well, screen the heck out of there friends and be open to there ways, within reason.
When it come to storing and protecting your valuables..
I have found if you put all your eggs in one basket you can loose all of your eggs.
I use this multi part strategy
Home Alarm
Remote Panic switch
Camera, I can view on my smart phone and sends me a text when someone enters the house.
Dog,friendly but loves to talk to strangers (Barks)
When I am not home I leave a radio on and one of those auto light switches that turns the light off and on by itself.
Always cancel mail and newspaper if away.
Safe deposit box
Gun safes ( more than one and not together)
Lock box secured to floor joists with over sized lag bolts from inside box
Hiding places, here are some i have seen that look good:
Mattress safe (mounts in side of box spring, cover over box spring then mattress on top)
Sump Pump who looks in there, use waterproof bags
Fake coke or soup cans (kitchen)
False compartments in furniture ect...
Holes in the wall or floor with access panels (preferably with screw on covers).
HAVC vents
Just a few ideas, some maybe more practical than other but better to think in terms of what could the bad guy get quickly with the alarm ringing, dog barking, phone ringing (alarm company calling). Figure they will have 10 to 15 min.to rob you blind, leave some expensive looking stuff , like fake jewelry, fake Rolex,a decoy cheap strong box with change and a few dollars in it to make them waste there time.A friend of mine has a locked gun case full of real looking fake guns.
Hope this helps

No kids around here and I do not imbibe so alcohol makes for some excellent, inexpensive bait. With luck, any would-be thieves would be alcoholics, find the tequila sitting front and center, and split with their booty.
Cameras send me emails whenever anything moves in or around the house.
Most of my safes are non-descript as they were banking industry surplus. More than one means not all eggs are in the same basket. Long guns are tougher as gun safes just scream "HERE I AM!!" I really like to disguise and hide.
I take zero prescriptions, which is a good thing since there's no room in the safes...

Keep kids safe? I'm the guy that leaves ice picks and paper clips near the electrical outlets. I'm writing a thesis on childhood intelligence...

My wife has laid claim on the most easily accessed shelf - right in the middle, and full size, for her Jewelry boxes and necklace holders .
She is a good girl so I`m happy to share with her.

my kids and grandkids , stay safe from guns out in the open because they were raised with them, and taught to respect them. everyone of them started shooting BB guns and 22's at an early age, with guidance. The only dangerous kid with a gun, is one who is told to never touch them and doesn't know the concept of what they will do. Just my humble opinion.

This winter I had pneumonia. One of the medicines I got was a cough syrup with hydrocodone (codene derivative) in it. I'd never had it before, and one teaspoon of that stuff put me back on my hunkers. I was glad I didn't have to drive, and didn't really want to pick up a carving knife and chop up an onion. I only took about four doses, and when I was sure I didn't need the rest, it went down the sink.

Good idea about keeping the drugs in one. We don't have children but was at a casino last week. My wife had me put my meds in the safe in the room to keep it always from prying eyes, good call on her part.
In-laws had their house broken into and MIL's cancer drugs stolen when they went to the ER. Karma sometimes works as we knew who did it and a couple weeks he OD'd from a Heroin dose mixed with something else. He's no longer a threat to their neighborhood.
Besides guns we keep jewelry and papers in ours.

Guns, some old coins, a few keepsakes, knives, and a couple of Timber Rattlers, who don't like to be disturbed.
No kids, just me.

I don't have any kids but if I did the safe would serve only as a distraction. I remember as a kid I had all of summer break to find my parents hidden stuff, and I often did. Manged to open a lock with a paper clip once and eventually figured out the combination to the safe. Idle hands....

I have a fire proof lock box in mine, I store money, important papers , jewelry and photos that I don't want lost.
And of course all of my guns are in there.
My gun safe was one of the greatest purchases I have ever made!
