Thumbs down Inglorious Basterds

Bought it, watched/read it. Not really impressed. Especially with all the media hype. A lot of the movie is dark and the sub-titles run by so fast you can't even begin to read them. That coupled with the fact that the words are in while letters and clash with the back ground.

While I did enjoy the whole premis of the movie..............I wouldn't pay $19.97 to buy it if I had seen it already.

just my 2 cents....

I found it to be a masterpiece. There were four scenes that were so tense when I saw it in the theatre that I found my hand gripping my ankle so hard my fingers hurt. I've never been to a movie with so many scenes that had me holding my breath.

The actor who played the lead German deserves a best supporting actor Oscar. He was amazing. I've never hated a character so much. He goes down as the best bad guy ever in my books.

Christoph Waltz, playing Col. Landa "the Jew hunter" was the star of the film. Brad Pitt and Quinten Tarantino knew it and let him steal every scene. The one between Pitt speaking "Italian" with a Southern accent and Landa speaking fluent Italian was priceless. Waltz, an Austrian, by the way is fluent in English and French but admits he sometimes fakes his Italian.

I agree he deserves an Oscar as best supporting actor.

Now that is saying something"best bad guy" I always thought Edward Fox in the original "Day of The Jackal" was the best bad guy. Not to be confused with the horrible remake with Bruce Willis. You could almost learn how to avoid passports, and end user permits just watching the movie. The Book was even better, as they usually are. Note} The Wild Geese novel and later movie was so accurate in the ability to avoid import and export laws that there was an attempt to censor it in the United Kingdom. I heard a reviewer say that there had to be some changes due to intervention by MI 6....Oldie but goodie!

I agree, Christoph Waltz was terrific as Col. Landa.

Default Whaaaat?!

It was amazing!

My wife and I started out laying down on our bed when we put it in...

by the end we were both sitting up at the foot of the bed leaning in to the tv!

The story was great, I love the way he puts his films together. The scene where the "Bear Jew" made his apearance from the tunnel...

And that ending.... I don't want to say anything about it but.. DANG!

Having subtitles isn't a good reason to not like a movie... if that's the case I'm afraid you'll be missing out on many great films.

What were you doing bending over in the Theater

The only good bits were Col. Landa's role .The rest was ****

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Don't have a problem with sub-titles, when they are more than a blink on the screen and in a color that contrasts well with the back ground.

I don't speak German, French or Italian. Not even with a southern accent. And like most movie "watchers" I watch a movie and listen to the sound. Very distracting trying to read a blink on the screen and take in the action on the TV as well.

Glad you enjoyed it.

So, just how "dark" is it? While I realize a war movie won't be Pollyanna, I really don't care much for gore, especially if torture is involved. I just don't need those kinds of scenes planted in my mind - real or fake.

I thought it was a little more gory than it needed to be.
I found myself wincing and looking away a few times but the movie is good and worth the 2 1/2 hours of your time.

Revisionist fantasy. Next they could do one with the Americans as a fascists and Nazi Germany as the arsenal of freedom. Mussolini could be Winston Churchill and the Sherman M-4 would have the armor of King Tigers. Maybe Richard Nixon could be Heydrich Reinhardt?

I watched today and yesterday, couldn't watch the whole thing at one time. Did see Rod Taylor and Bo Svenson in it. I liked Pitt's mustache made him look manly.

I watch sub titled movies a lot so I was able to keep up, I am just not that into Tarantino movies.

I loved it when I saw it in the theater and can't wait to watch it again in glorious Blu-Ray.

I watched it a couple or nights ago. I think it is one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time.

Couldn't figure out if it was going to be "historical", "comedy", "drama"...blah, blah, blah.

After a while it was obvious that it wasn't "historical" but the story was fantastic.

The acting, for the most part was stellar.

Good movie....I recommend it highly.

Watched the first three or so "Chapters" last night and was completely underwhelmed.

Found no real reason to root for the protagonists. Yes, the Nazis were bad. I know that. Tell me something I don't know.

I'm a fan of Tarantino movies . . . Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Kill Bill 1 & 2. Inglourious Basterds is simply . . . Tarantino does Nazis. I really liked the movie. I didn't much care for Pitt (although I generally like him as an actor), but I loved everyone else in the movie, especially Standartenführer (SS Colonel) Landa played by Christoph Waltz. He should win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, hands down.

I saw the movie and didn't think it was all that great, nor was it very bad.

Now I have to speak for my father, who doesn't do anything on the Internet. My father (78th Infantry, Purple Heart, wounded December 14, 1944) was extremely upset with the scenes of Nazis laughing at American soldiers being killed. When I say upset, I mean really upset.

He already knew the Nazis were not nice people, and will express to anyone who will listen his feeling that this part was overdone.

I think the gore shown added to the intensity of the dialog, which, as in the bar scene where they were playing guess the character, was exceptionally well done.

nicky4968,

I can sympathize and understand your father's reaction.

But for my part I found the scenes "funny" in that the Americans were being mowed down with multiple shots, as if an automatic weapon was being used, but it was a single sniper "hero" with a Mauser bolt action rifle. It was purely a depiction, albeit a silly one, for the Nazi propaganda machine.

I think that was the point of the scene--the "hero" was being honored for something he couldn't possibly have done for three days while the Americans were shooting at him with automatic weapons and who knows what else. Yet the sniper's open tower position remained totally intact.
The fact that in one scene he was sitting beside thousands upon thousands of spent cartridges was part of the fantasy/propaganda.

We decided not to watch the rest of the movie. I've probably bailed on two or three movies my entire life, and I've sat through some real stinkers on sheer stubborness. I'm not real picky especially if there's guns and nazis involved but you have to give me at least a tiny reason to like the main characters.

Well, my wife and I just finished watching it. Three bucks and change from Blockbuster.

For those who thought this was a "great" movie, .

It was interesting, sometimes funny, but overall so unrealistic with characters that were so uncharismatic and unlikeable that I'd have to give it a 6 on a scale of 10.

Most of the gore was either over or underdone (compare Saving Private Ryan with this movie).

OTOH, we happened on Casablanca the other night. Although I have seen it a dozen times or more, we both thought that this was the definition of a "great" movie.

Not that I like "chic flics," I really prefer the shoot 'em ups like Zulu, the various "Alamos," etc.

Bob

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I meant dark as in "the absence of light". With my failing eyes and apparent poor reading skills................it just didn't measure up to all the TV hype (IMO). My comments about the movie had nothing to do with the acting capabilities of Sean Claude the Pipe Smoker or anyone else.

Some of you seem surprised that it's "gory" and "not historically accurate." Is this the first Tarantino movie you've seen?

Saw it in the theater, bought it the day it came out.
Everyone I have let see the movie has been blown away.
I am a fast reader, read The Stand in a day... a LONG day, so I had no issues with the subtitles.
My wife doesnt hear well and is used to watching movies with subtitles as well... and she loved it/had no issues.
The characters are typical Tarentino... over the top and outlandish.
History was tossed out the window... Im used to that and know what happened... people shouldnt look to hollywood to give them proper history and/or all the facts.
I applaud the use of native speakers for the non english parts.

The scene in the tavern was by FAR my favorite, possibly the best done scene in 30 years+.

I stand by my love for the movie and would give it a 9.5-10.

Only Tarantino can put David Bowie's "Putting Out Fire" from the 1980's movie "Cat People" up on the screen in a Nazi movie...and make it work!

Probably the first time I have watched Brad Pitt since Thelma and Louise, I thought his accent and dialogue were hilarious. Entertaining flick.

Movies like this are why I love my library. I went on line and saw that they have it on BluRay...put a hold on it, and will get an email when it is available for pick up.
Not a movie I would pay to see, but for free from the library? You bet!
Most movies are like that for me.

Funny you mention that. If I had to make a list of the most over-hyped, under-delivered movies I have ever seen, he might get four into the top five.

I really want to like his movies more. I love the idea of outlandish, cartoon-like action, or oddball characters, however you want to describe it. I end up thinking he's just too clever for his own good.

But he's convinced everyone else he's a genius, so I'm the odd man out.

I'm not a Tarantino fanboy - I thought his half of Grindhouse was awful - but he's back on the top of his game with Basterds.

I watched it again on Blu-Ray and caught a lot of things I missed in the theater. I'll probably watch it again in a couple of days. I think the rats and squirrels speech is some of the best writing he's ever done.

I saw MOST of it on an airplane. The last I saw was when B Pitt was captured & hauled off? I thought it was O.K., but don't plan to rent it. How does it end?

I thought the premise was stupid and the revisionism was over the top. That being said, I throughly enjoyed the movie-the scenes and dialogue were superb-Landa was a masterpiece. I also enjoyed the Cat People song in the theatre.

It was the worst movie I had seen in a LONG time. I have no idea why we watched the entire movie. Simplistic with blood.

My step-daughter watched it with me and she's a movie nut...her first words after the credits rolled..."what a waste of time".

I agree...a waste of time.

I enjoyed it, and was happy to see Waltz get his deserved Oscar. I had little trouble with the subtitles, and also liked Tarantino's use of music from other fims. He's done that before, and it works, at least for me. I don't recall any too much in the way of gore, except maybe for the scene in the vet's office with the woman, but that wasn't too much for me. Absolutely NO relation to flicks like "Hostel" or "Saw." Those seemed to use gore as selling points. All things being equal, I found this to be a nice piece of work, and await his next feature.

For all the hype, I thought I would get to see a whole lot more Nazi thrashing. I left feeling let down.

I've pretty much given up on Tarantino films. He completely overdoses on the blood and guts. Might as well paint half the screen red.

I love Chapter 2---and "Oogo Stiglitz"---Til Schweiger. Brad
Pitt was funny as hell and Col Landa was excellent.Pete

PS: Brad Pitt to "OOGO"---"We just wanted to see if YOU want to go PRO"

I loved it. I loved the way Brad Pitt's character said Nazi. Especially Lt Aldo Raine's line. "You probably heard we ain't in the prisoner-takin' business; we in the killin' Nazi business. And cousin, business is a-boomin"

And the Colonel Hans Landa character was fantastic. An absolute phsycopath.

I loved this movie. The dialogue in the opening chapter between the farmer and SS Colonel Landa is some of the most intense I can ever recall. I laughed out loud every time Brad Pitt as Aldo Raines said... anything.

As for the gore... it's a Tarantino movie. It's part of his schtick and I like it. I also enjoyed the revisionist ending. A Tarantino masterpiece, in my opinion.

War is far more gory than anything Hollywood can make up.
Hollywood cannot tell the truth so don't ever expect any film to be historicaly accurate.
I liked the Nazi portrayal--you didn't expect an SS officer to be a choir boy.
War is funny at times--maybe funny is not the correct word but so odd it must be laughed at.
I happen to like Tarintino's story telling method.
It was a good movie.
Blessings

"Gawer LOW mi."

I gotta rate this as among my top 10 WWII flicks of all time.

The degree of hate that one could generate for Waltz' character is the modern day equivalent of, "Scorpio" from the, "Dirty Harry" days. To be able to cause an audience member to feel ANYTHING that strongly about their character is the mark of a brilliant actor. I'd not previously heard of this Waltz fellow.

And fake or otherwise, I loved seeing Hitler get disassembled with 230 gr. hardball.

Pulp Fiction was my favorite Tarantino movie, it's my favorite movie of the 90's. It's followed closely by Reservoir Dogs. Inglorious Basterds is now my favorite Tarantino, and one of the best movies I've seen in the last 10 years.

My two fav Landa scenes:

In the farmhouse.

Eating desert with the woman.

That dude is freaky scary. He's all friendly and cavalier because he knows he has 'em, and death is coming. Yikes

The scene in the basement bar/Ratskelter was awesome too. It portrays very well how spies can die with one tiny, minute error.
