Knee replacement in the AM
Report to the hospital at 0600! Left knee is worn out, after-effect of a bad PLF in 1968. Amazed to hear the op only takes about an hour, hour and a half max! Four days there then at least a week in the rehab facility. Could be a couple of weeks before I'm able to spend much time here. More apprehensive about this than the coronary bypass in '05!

Hang in there, TD! A good friend had both knees replaced at age 65 and 66, and while it wasn't fun, he reports he is delighted with the results.
All the best to you, and please keep us posted on how you are doing!

I had mine done almost 4 weeks ago. Probley wasnt as extendsive as yours, they went in 3 holes. Torn muniscous, scrape something etc. It was a piece of cake. They put me out. No pain or not much. I am trying to leave my walking stick now. Nothing to fear! I was outpatent. My knees are weak when I try to stand up, stiff in the middle of the night going to the bathroom but I am okay once up and walking. Up and down grades a little bit of a challange yet. I am lazy and should be walking and exerciseing more.

#1. Fine a GOOD Physical Therapist and go religiously!
My wife has had both knees replaced this year - after 15 years of pain pills. The therapist twice each week has worked wonders with her.
I followed her up a flight of stairs last week and was amazed to see her walk up just like a "normal" person.
Good luck on the procedure!!!

I had a total knee done about 18 months ago before they found out I had cancer.
Thank goodness! They probabely won’t do it now.
So nice to be rid of the chronic pain. I was only 49, but first hurt in 1979. I went in on a Monday and walked out on Wednesday. I’m younger than you though I suspect.
The Doc’s here at least really have the surgery down, and I think you’ll be a happy man.
Take care,
Emory

`My wife had one replaced about five years ago. She walks so much better now. She used to walk like Quasimoto, It was painful to watch. It was a huge improvement. She can't put any weight on her new knee as in kneeling down, but she can walk erect again. Be sure to do the rehab. Hurts like hell, But gives you more range in bending. We have a friend who had the surgery and cut the exercises short. He said he could walk ok, so he quit the knee exercises. Now he doesn't have a full range of movement. Good luck to you. Hope it goes well.

I've had both of mine done. It kept me from retiring before I wanted to. Do the PT's and then some. The pain is gone and I'm no longer bow-legged.

Good luck. I hope all goes well for you.
If it can cheer you up...
about 10 years ago a LEO friend of mine went in for knee surgery (Not sure of type but not replacement.) At the time I was dating a surgical nurse who's friend worked at the hospital he was going to. We had her wait until he was partially sedated to ask him:
"now which testical was it we were supposed to remove?"
The look on his face when I saw him after surgery was priceless!

Dan,
Look at this as an adventure. Besides, it's just the first part
of your life with new, non-painful parts. I know a man who
got a new knee, and he's been playing racketball with it for 10 years now.
Guess you'll be doing benchrest shooting for a while.
Please post when you get back. TACC1

I wish you the best and a speedy recovery. Many people sail through knee replacement and I hope you are one of them.

Please keep us updated to your progress. My orthopedic MD told me yesterday my right knee is wore out and I should have the same surgery in the next two years, I had half of the ACL removed back in 1995. Hope all goes well and you're "back on your feet" in no time.

You need to get them both done or you'll forever be walking in a circle. Or so I've been told

Said a prayer for you brother.
My sister-in-law last week had a hip replacement and I just recently had all my teeth pulled, (nightmare!), so I feel for you!
I also had a 8 hour knee operation 25 years ago but they've come a long ways since then and it sounds like they have knee replacements down nowadays.
