Default Show me how you organize your safes.

We've had abnormally high humidity here in Utah and I am worried that my safe doesn't circulate the air very well. So I have decided to ditch the foam cases and purchase some racks to sit my guns in with grips off. My problem is how to orient 30 or so guns in one Browning safe. I'd love to see how you organize your guns in your safe. Would also take any suggestions on how to best achieve increased air flow without decreasing accessability to my guns. Here's what I have already done. I have a couple humidity packs. I bought a couple wire racks covered with rubber and filled both of them up (can these cause ware at the areas where the guns rest) and that's about it as I have run out of useable space. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

No higher humidity than Florida,

One word

GOLDENROD..

If there is no hole, drilling one in the rear is usually no problem.. The plug attaches AFTER you pass the wire through from the inside..

Google Goldenrod dehumidifier..

What is this organization you speak of? I have about 45 long guns and 20 handguns in a 40 gun safe, sardines have it good compared to my guns.

I'd get away from foam cases as fast as I could, use golden rod heater and you're set, it gets plenty humid in Ga. I've never had any trouble and I leave the grips on the guns.

As for fitting alot of guns, I decided I'd never be able to buy something ready made that makes the most of space I had, so I built my own rack.
I came up with a double deck design that holds 28 handguns in the top 1/3 of my safe.

This may sound like a stupid question but do you keep your safes in a non climate controlled enviroment? The humidity here in Florida is terrible but in my house it is about 45 to 50 %, so why would I need a dehumidifier?

I should have added that I do have a Golden Rod in my safe but I recently turned it off because I would open my safe and it felt a bit warmer inside the safe than I thought was good. I do not have my safe inside my house because I don't have room for it. It's in the garage and the temperatures fluctuate big time here in Utah.
I was thinking of making my own shelves, as what is in there now is not very effective for guns without cases.

I'd think you would want some kind of shelves in your safe. Maybe that plastic coated wire shelving which is sold at Lowes, so air will circulate?

I use an old Jewelery safe which came with lots of shelves and drawers. I covered the shelves and lined the drawers with a thin, felt type, outdoor carpet. For dehumidifying I keep a Golden Rod at the bottom and a Remington dehumidifier near the top. Main thing is to make sure the inside of your safe is always warmer than the outside air.

My vault has adjustable height shelving using two on a side rails to hold clips for the shelves. My vault only has handguns. I added homemade shelves.

I use the rubber coated wire racks on the shelves.

I use hooks for hanging some by the trigger guard.
I also use hangers off the shelves on shorter barrels that fit.

I have several long barreled revolvers that must be turned sideways to fit them on the floor of the vault.

I organize by caliber on each shelf rather than manufacturer.

Customizing to Whatever Works is required at the end.

On coated racks on shelf’s in my safe.
Have lived in Ct., Co., Fl., and now Or. and never had a problem with rust.
Safe is in the temperature controlled house, firearms are well cared for and when I’m home the safes doors are opened.

They work but be careful of knives with stacked leather handles.
I had one dry out and start to disintegrate.

I got a dehumidifier that is rated for damp basements. It knocked the humidity down noticeably.

Default dehumidifier question

I have a rechargeable dehumidifier in the safe and never bought an electric one because I was told years ago that it keep it too dry in the safe and crack the wood stocks on the rifles. If anybody knows about this I would like to hear it. Thanks

I used to have a gun vault full of guns but the vault fell out of my boat. Humidity is no longer an issue.

If your safe is in your home and you have central heat and air, the humidity gadgets shouldn't be necessary. I've never had a problem in the thirty-five years I've been using non-fireproof, uninsulated safes. Wipe your guns with a lightly oiled soft cloth every year or two.

Yes Goldenrod. And if you store your vault on your boat, make sure each gun is wearing a life vest.

1) Goldenrod
2) Borestores for every gun
3) Once in the borestores, the plastic-coated racks will not damage the finish, unless you throw them in overhanded
4) The rechargeable silica gel dehumidifier is a good backup, specially at the bottom of the safe
5) periodic cleaning and wiping the gun with a gun oil will do them well...every six months or so.
6) If you must take guns on the boat, the waterproof floating case will give them a fighting chance

I use a container filled with desiccant to keep it dry in my safe . I've never had a rust issue so I'm happy with it .

I've thought about getting one for both of my safes, but since the AC in always on when it's hot I never did. Their open a lot when I'm home.

Hardly ever open the windows, in the spring and fall I might leave the patio door open a while.
