Talking Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster and Jack Palance

Finished cutting the grass, had all the chores done so I turned on the tv, and saw 'The Professionals' on so I finished watching it. Made in 1966 it is still entertaining and had real tough guy actors in it. Lee Marvin looked like he knew how to use a 1903 Springfield.

Lee knew a thing or two about rifles. He served as a U.S. Marine in World War II.

One of my all time faves. My wife tracked down a DVD with great special features. My favorite line:
Lee Marvin to Burt: " So what's on your mind besides 80 proof whiskey, hundred proof women, and fourteen karat gold?"
Here's another reason I like that movie, and one of my best screensavers....

She's voluptuous (like I had to point that out!) mexican actress Marie Gomez who was Jack Palance's right hand babe in battle in the Professionals. She was also Manolito's occasional girlfreind on High Chapparal.

Wow, guess I was wrong. And you are right, I remember her now. So much for imdb.com.

Great movie with great actors, great guns and beautiful women like Hollywood used to appreciate. Don't forget Woody Strode.

I just got two donkeys to keep the coyotes away from the goats. I named the male Raza and the female Maria after the Jack Palance and Claudia Cardinale characters in that movie. One of my favorites.

Love that movie - it has everything. Tough guys, good-lookin' women, horses, guns, action, and a good script:

"Yes ma'am, I'm on my way."

My favorite line:

J.W. Grant: You bas tard
Rico: Yes, Sir. In my case an accident of birth. But you, Sir, you're a self-made man.

Most actors back in the day knew how to handle guns. I had a great aunt that worked in Hollywood 1930-1965. I remember stories she told how anyone entering the studio contract system had to take classes including shooting. It didn’t matter if you had been in the military, you could not shoot until you were studio trained.

You watched The Proffesionals for only the hundredth time?! What an amateur! In the DVD special features they interview the two women in the movie and Marie Gomez, now in her early 70's probably, said they wanted her to be a soldier, but also a woman, to maintain both those characteristics, which she did great. That's why she wore dresses and danced around all cute when not in battle.

Probably my favorite movie. Everybody knows like they know what they're doing. Note the part where Marvin is cleaning guns, and using a shaving brush to knock off the dust...or using the Lewis.

The music is great, too...

I've always liked Jack Palance. Still remember his first role as Wilson, the gunslinger, in Shane. I read in a movie fan magazine that he got that ugly face from a direct hit in the nose of his bomber in WW2. Seems like he was a bombardier. Can't remember the type of plane, though.

He got burned as a student pilot in world war two. This is out of wikipedia. Somewhere I might still have a picture I took of him and a old GF of mine once at a pow wow in tehatchipi california. He lived in the area along with chuck conners and noah beery. They used to hang out at kellys resturant in tehatchipi.
"With the outbreak of the Second World War, Palance's boxing career ended and his military career began as a member of the United States Army Air Forces. Palance's rugged face, which took many beatings in the boxing ring, was said to have become disfigured while bailing out of a burning B-24 Liberator bomber during a training flight over southern Arizona, where he was a student pilot. His distinctive gaunt look, it was said, was what he was left with after plastic surgeons had done the best that they could for him. The story of Palance's reconstructed face was repeated numerous times, including in respected film reference works, but upon his death several obituaries of Palance quoted him as saying that the entire story had been contrived: "Studio press agents make up anything they want to, and reporters go along with it. One flack created the legend that I had been blown up in an air crash during the war, and my face had to be put back together by way of plastic surgery. If it is a 'bionic face,' why didn't they do a better job of it?"

LOVE...the movie!!

For a 1966 "western" it was very well done.

Just recently had to buy the DVD as my VHS tape gave out.

The Professionals was an excellent film. Like so many of that period, it had a rousing story, good production, fine direction, outstanding cinematography and a memorable musical score. Best of all, it had a cast of dynamic and charismatic actors.

I miss this type of film making. Today it seems to me that computer created imaging and scrubby-faced actors have replaced good old fashioned story telling by fine actors.

I can recall a time when an actor of the stature of a Cary Grant, Gary Cooper or Steve McQueen would enter a commissary and their sheer presence would render the room silent as everyone would simply hold their breath and stare.

Viewing The Professionals, Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin supported by others in the cast, riveted my attention to the action on the screen. It was a most enjoyable film!
