I have no more information then they were fired from a .30-30 rifle, lever action I think but maybe not. My daughters boyfriend who lives 800 miles away sent me this picture. I don't know that type of ammunition it was I think he said Remington. I do know he said it was new ammo right from the box and that it was the correct ammunition for that rifle.

It looks like a mis-match between ammunition and the rifle. Why in the world are there THREE of them? Didn't someone notice something unusual after the first shot????

That was the first question I asked. He said it was the correct ammunition for the rifle. Why 3, I guess 4 was to many.

Looks to me like they were fire-formed into the shape of the chamber, which btw AIN'T .30-30. I just had my 336 out to the range last week and that is WAY too short for a .30-30's neck.

I'd be curious to see the stamps on the caseheads. I say this because back in my Gander Mtn. days, sometimes inbred yayhoos would switch cartridges with their respective boxes, thinking it was funny.

I hope nobody was hurt.

Wrong ammo for the rifle....I can't imagine it being anything else...

I tried calling her to see if he figured out what happened. I doubt he would tell me it was the incorrect ammunition even if it was, which I think it was anyway. I never thought of the switch-a-roo ammunition trick. He did say he got the ammo from a Walmart, and they live in South Carolina so I don't know if their ammo is accessible to the public on the shelves.

Where are they at in South Carolina? I'm in the Low Country myself. Most Walmarts seem to have ammo in case, but some have rifle and shotgun ammunition - particularly during hunting season - out on the shelves.

.30-30 cartridges fired in a .303 British rifle.

The shoulder is where the .303 chamber is.

The very end of the case and bullet entered the .303 chamber and almost oburated, but the body being much smaller than the chamber burst.

It looks like necked down .303 to me because of the similar shoulder angle but impossible to say for sure.

Yup. The ammo box label had 3s and 0s in it, and in the right order. Must be the right stuff.

Was the rifle that they were fired from a lever action or a bolt action? Some people assume, wrongly, that all lever actions are .30-30s. There was a .375 Winchester chambered Marlin for sale in the Charleston area recently, hence I was just curious if it was what had somehow been fired with the wrong ammo.

Right now all I know is what I have posted. I think lever but I could be wrong. I think he's had the gun for a while and have shot it some in the past, but I just don't know right now. Since I'm more or less his father-in-law I think he might not want to tell me it was the wrong ammo because then I might think of him as the dumb *** my daughter is living with.

I took a look at the case dimensions of the .348 Winchester, the chambering of the Winchester Model 71, thinking that's a lever gun with a much larger chamber than the .30-30, but the chamber dimensions suggest that while you might cram a .30-30 round into a .348 chamber, the firing pin likely wouldn't reach the primer.

Interesting case --- hope we learn the story...

I once found 5 .300 Win mag cases in the brass bucket at the club I belonged to in MN, with a very distinctive Weatherby shoulder and a very short neck.

Dang... I'm glad no one was injured shooting those rounds... remind me to NOT buy any ammo in SC!

To me it looks like .30-30 ammo fired in a .38-55 or .375 Win. I think someone is assuming that the rifle is a .30-30.

All I know for certain is that the rifle and the ammo are not the same caliber.

If the rounds were fired in what I think they were; probably around a 36 inch group at 25 yds.

I thik John Traveler nailed it: 30-30 fired in a 303. They couldn't have been fired in a 30-06 bcause the rim of the 30-30 case would prevent the bolt from closing completely.

Can't be. Both of those are just 30/30 necked up. The body is the same size. Shooting a 30/30 in a 38/55 would give you bad accuracy and a nicely fire-formed 38/55 case. No ruptures.

Perhaps the gun had a bulged barrel?

The only way to solve the problem, since he is so handy with the camera- is to have him send a nice picture of the gun with emphasis on the barrel near the sight- then it can be established what the caliber is...or is not.

Whatever it is, it ain't .30-30.

I think my daughter actually took and sent me the picture. I think I'll use her as a secret agent today and have her do just that. I'll tell her to take a picture of the guns caliber(she does know a little about guns), the box of ammo and the case head stamp on those three that were fired.

what with all the recalls Remington is putting out , it might be their fault!!.

My nosey self is dying to know the straight skinny on this.
I also forgot to factor in the possibility of it being undercaliber ammo in an actual .30-30 chamber. Others did NOT forget to factor this in. My hat is off to y'all.

I too am thinking 30-30 in a .307 To the unknowing there's not a lot of difference in the looks of the two rifles.

I like old guns so I'm going to guess 30/30 shot out of an 1895 Winchester chambered in30/40 Krag. We should make a contest out of this with a prize for the weiner!!! ( the right guess not the boyfriend)LOL

My daughter had to work today and is not home yet, not till later tonight. I will post what it was when I find out.

I think John Traveler hit it on the head, that sure looks like something fireformed to .303 to me. And I think the question 'why were there three of them' is quite valid, I usually don't have to be hit with a 2x4 more than once to start thinking somethings going wrong.

Well, if it was a Winchester lever action it has to be .30-30 since everyone knows all Winchester lever actions are .30-30 don't they???

LVSteve & JT likely have it. It could have been a .30-40 1895 or a .303 British, both are quite common. Probably .303 though as the neck/shoulder junction is about .060 longer than the .30-40. The short neck would have been longer if the rifle was a .30-40.

.307, .38-55, .375 Win, .32 Spl etc. Are you kidding? This shows such a lack of basic knowledge as to be pathetic. Doesn't anyone have a reloading manual or C.O.W. to compare cartridge dimensions?????????????? Do some of you even own a gun, or really shoot?

I've seen similar when someone fired 303 Savage in a 303 Enfield rifle. Guess he thought that a 303 was a 303.

.30-30 fired from a 303 Enfield....got the info from my daughter today. She said his grandfather just gave him that rifle and some paperwork that went along with it. Apparently it was the wrong paperwork for that rifle, he was given the paperwork for a 30-30 with the rifle. So I guess he picked up a box of 30-30 ammo while he was in Walmart and didn't look at the stamp on the gun. The rest of the story is self explanatory.
