I miss Justin Wilson and the Cajun stories.

A feller can't even find the Andy Griffith Show on anymore. Used to be easy to flip on the TV and find it on somewhere.
Can't even find any Laurel & Hardy, Marx Brothers or Three Stooges on anymore either.

Don't let me be put in charge...there would be a lot of modern cartoon writers that would be not heard from again. None of the modern ones are funny at all- I tried to watch one, and was appalled. I guess Popeye and any pro-American genre is out of style.

TCM does show a few good vintage movies, but more often now they are modern junk.

The shows are bad enough but then you have the commercials to contend with. I get real tired of the ones that show bad or annoying behavior in public places like we just have to accept it. And really, how many times do we need to see Viagra and Cialas commercials? Used to be the only commercials aimed at this age group were for Buick, life insurance, and ben-gay.

I still have not figured that out. Reminds of a t-shirt I saw the other day. "Well okay....but wash it first".

the overuse of the adjective "Extreme" in everything.
I was subjected to a few minutes of the travel channel's "extreme beaches" yeah right ... when I think of an extreme beach, its Omaha beach Normandy 1944.
When your beach experience includes MG42's slinging an endless stream of 8MM hot lead at you, Artillery bursting all over, your buddy asking for your last hand grenade, and your festive activities include crater hopping and Bangalore relays ... You are having an extreme beach experience.
Strolling in the sand hand in hand just does not qualify as extreme no matter the scenery

The "TV Land" network (Directv channel 304, Dish channel 106) runs an Andy Griffith marathon every Sunday through Monday morning

One of our local independent religious channels that I never watch runs one episode daily.

Default TV these days is horrid!

I used to comment that when pro wrestling was all that was any good on TV anymore, then it was past a mercy shot. The late great Ernie Kovacs said it best when he said "Television is called a medium because it is neither rare nor well-done..." and that was back in its early days.

You take a look at classic TV shows....modern shows cannot even hold a candle to them. I watched the classic Green Hornet with Van Williams and Bruce Lee...made by the same people that made Batman and during the same era but serious and not silly or campy. It actually was entertainment. I don't watch TV that much...simply because there are so many "American Idol/Survivior/60 Minutes clones out there and all equally garbage no sane person could stand it very long.

If TV these days was shown to prisoners in Gitmo, then I could honestly claim the prisoners were getting cruel and unusual punishment.

The Military Channel.
The Cowboy Channel.

The rest I will pass on, most of the time.

Funny, I LIKE tv but I've managed never to watch any of the shows you referenced. Selection must be better than I thought.

True, there are a few decent shows but the garbage certainly outweigh those.

Howdy,
I could give you a million reasons why, but TV news has it's share of responsibility in "Whats wrong"
Local, national, cable or network. It is all a joke!

It's an indictment of our society that so many of these shows are so popular. Look at which movies are at or near the top--mostly (to me, at least) *******. If I want to see a reality show, I'll gladly watch a ballgame. More important to me than so many of these (poorly) scripted 'real life' dungheaps. It really embarrasses me what a lookeeloo country we've sunk to. Privacy? What's that? Not much left anymore--no profit in it.

A few years ago I remarked to Luscious that I didn't understand why GM was using Led Zeppelin's song "Rock and Roll" for the music in their Cadillac commercials. "After all" I said, "Cadillacs are for old people, aren't they?"

She just kept looking at me, waiting for it to sink in.

"Oh."

Addition: "Hip" T.V. Shows

I wonder if any of the thugs know where and why wearing their pants half-way down the butts got started.

I'll tell you where, you figure out why.
Where: It started in the penitentiaries.

...But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland.

You will see a procession of game shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western bad men, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence, and cartoons. And endlessly, commercials -- many screaming, cajoling, and offending. And most of all, boredom. True, you'll see a few things you will enjoy. But they will be very, very few. And if you think I exaggerate, I only ask you to try it...

Newton Minow, then chair of the FCC in a speech to the National Association of Broadcasters. The date?

9 MAY 1961!!!

I looked at the OP's original list and he was right all those shows are stupid. None the less I still like.

Pawn stars (Chumlee's funny, Big Hoss is lucky his daddy owns the place, Grampa's cool)

Hard core pawn (too bad they have to bleep every third word, doe's everyone in Detroit really talk that way?)

Storage wars (they find some neat stuff)

Ice road truckers (maybe it's just Lisa Kelly I like)

But he forgot my all time favorite WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT (I never understood why women loved soap operas till I saw WWE......Now I understand)

OK, I also watch The science channel & Nat geo etc. But lets face it sometimes trash is fun.

As John Prine sang...
Quote:
We blew up our T.V.
Except for a few periods have been sans paid TV and am now. Most local broadcaster's added channels after the change over to DTV and have some good movie or retro TV show channels.

Challenge you all to cut the cable or sat and put that money to better use. You might even save a brain cell or three.

Default The best thing to do is DON'T

Years ago I read that in New York city, if a customer was behind in paying for his cable TV, The co. would disconnect service 'till the bill was paid.

Average was over 5 months before service was restored.

They then tried locking the service on cspan.

3 out of 4 paid in full within 30 days.

Tells me that no matter what is on the tube, people will watch. Liking the show is optional, watching it is mandatory (or just plain habit).

The industrial revolution of the 1700 & 1800's was all about inventing time-saving & work-saving devices, right up 'till the TV was invented. Seems we had saved so much time & work, we now needed a time-wasting device to fill our days (is this for lack of having a real life?)

When my last child left home, the TV left also. Don't need it. Don't want
it. Don't miss it.

Jim

Tempted to do just that and bridged the conversation with the spousal unit. Luscious says she will think about it after "All My Children" goes off the air.

In the meantime, I'm as bad as all the others - if it's on, I'm sitting on my duff staring at it.

The "air" channels are free via the rabbit ears here and to a large part of the US with a roof mounted antennae.

Glad to see people in the same frame of mind as me.

I've found myself watching only TCM, Discovery and (some) History Channel. I don't know what I need a 47" flatscreen or all of the DISH channels for.

Well, I don't. My wife watches that stuff on the big screen. I watch B&W movies in the bedroom.

Very seldom watch any of the listed shows. Enjoy channels such as Discovery, RTV, Western, Military, TNN, some of the science channels and documentaries. Will always watch Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits when on. Also Have Gun, Will Travel, Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, The Virginian.

Don't even get me started! I call it moron television - the dumbing down of America. I caught myself watching this dribble one evening and thought "What the #@%X am I doing?" I stopped watching this stuff. Oh, watch the evening news - NBC is the worst with commercials for any kind of drug you can think of. Brian Williams would be dead of an O.D. if he took all the stuff NBC pushed in the half hour he is on.

The humorist Fred Allen, now almost forgotten, is credited with the phrase, "They call TV a medium because it is neither rare nor well done." You can find that attributed also to Ernie Kovacs and others, but I am pretty sure Fred Allen gets the credit.

Allen or somebody like him said of the early TVs, "There is a brightness control, but it doesn't seem to work."
