Here is an old Colt Police Positive from the Troy, NY Police Department. Not sure when they carried these, trying to get some information or maybe a town historian. It actually shoots very well.

LE Marks
No Smiths but two revolvers from the "other" company. The prices are from about 10 years ago.
Official Police: Boston P.D. ; paid $250
Python: Florida Highway Patrol; paid $875
Good field for collecting, there are some L.E. marked handguns around.

Some collectors or special interest buyers look for LE marked guns. I just buy shooters so I wind up with them. Mostly S&Ws.
I am told the dealer where this was shipped supplied cops in Texas but it is not marked. May have been a personal purchase by an officer. I paid $195 for it about 12 years ago at a Denver show.
I got this from a wholesaler in 1989 for $189. They had a bunch of them and they were advertised as police turn ins but it is not marked and I have no idea which agency used it.
No question about this one's heritage. Factory inscribed Utah Highway Patrol it is one of 50 (#27) sent to that agency. I bought it about 5-6 years ago and I know I paid too much for it (rare for me to admit that being a famous cheapskate and finder of good deals) but it was something that I just wanted... badly. I paid $3,000 for it.
A rare 4" pre-war Heavy Duty shipped in 1940 to the Ft. Smith, Arkansas PD. Was blue, someone plated it. Not stamped but letters as shipped to the PD. Bagged it at a local gun show 3-4 years back for $400. Even had the letter with it. Probably too much given the condition, but I live in AR and this is the only gun I have with AR LE history.
A genuine original nickel plated LE revolver. Shipped to the Florida Highway Patrol in 1977 (photo tag says 75 but it was 77). I bought it as police surplus in 1988 for $215. I believe it was in unfired condition when I got it. Must not have ever been issued. One of my favorite (if not THE favorite) pistols.
Bought this at a gunshow in Utah around 2000. Lettered as shipped to the campus police at "Louisiana University" (LA State or U. of LA?). This one looked like new and I paid $165 for it.
Both shipped in 1949. One went to a police officers' private club in Los Angeles and the other to a police supply house in NYC. I figure both were personal purchases by cops for off duty carry. Found them 3-4 years ago one month apart at a local gun show. Paid $200 and $210 (could NOT get the guy down to $200!) respectively.
A typical Victory Model for Great Britain it bears German PD stampings. The town is in Saxony meaning it was carried by a Saxon pig. Got this a couple months ago for $250 on GunBroker.
Another German PD (Wolfsburg) marking on this 1918 DWM P.08. My mother gave me a 1918 DWM Luger for my 21st birthday but it was stolen in 1985. I bought this as a replacement. I think I paid $375 for it.
Shipped to U.S. Customs in 1970 to supply federal officers from various agencies. I bought it in 1992 from a retired agent who said he carried it for 18 years. Paid $185. This is a daily carry piece for me. This makes 3 original LE guns in nickel I own.
Bought this about 4 years ago for $265 on Auction Arms. More than I wanted to pay but exactly what I was seeking and as the old saying goes, the time to buy is when you find what you want. This is the second of my daily work guns. Stamped for the Corpus Christi PD.
Used by the Atlanta PD (according to the dealer selling them about 6 years ago) this 659 is my most purely functional gun. I think it's ugly but does exactly what I need it to do. Lives in my PU truck. Paid $232 on Auction Arms.

All LEO firearms or trade-ins ARE NOT MARKED. If your're interested in marked ones make sure that's understood especially dealing on the internet. I have one purchased here and one of the recent for sale ones from Budsguns, neither is marked and I didn't care either way.

I only have four leo marked guns in my collection and those were purely by chance. One is a Pueblo Colorado marked 38-44 Heavy Duty, the second is a CHP marked Model 66(without the PD overstamps), the third is a double action only LAPD marked model 66, and last but not least, a RHKP model 10. I don't normally collect PD marked guns, but in the case of the two model 66's, that's all that was available except for the CHP commemorative, and I avoid commemoratives like the plague, and the RHKP and Pueblo guns were priced so low, it would have been sinful not to bring them home with me.....

I've got a couple. This 15-3 is marked "D.P.S. 2973." I've been told both the Texas and Arizona Department of Public Safety marked their guns this way.
Then I've got this Colt Official Police from 1939 (according to Proofhouse), marked as "Treasury Department Secret Service."
I'm not sure how well this shows up. It doesn't on my monitor very well.

The Arkansas State Police used Heavy Duty's from 1937 to around 1968 when they transitioned to Model 28 Highway Patrolmen .357 magnums.
The 4 inch is mid 1950s.
They were factory roll marked on the backstrap.

I have a couple of ex-LE Smith & Wessons.
The Pencil barreled Pre Model 10 was an ex-NYPD gun that has since been refinished. Manufactured in 1945 or 46. I do not remember which. The heavy barreled Model 10-8 is, apparently a Canadian law enforcement trade-in. It was shipped to Shuriken Distributing Co in Mississauga, Ontario in Sept 1982 but is not police marked. The importer, though, swears up and down in was a police trade-in.

I have a 5903TSW marked Gwinnette Co. I have a P229R CPO that was probably some Fed. LE agency but not marked and I have a Beretta 92f that was an ex Thomasville PD gun but it's not marked either. I really don't care one way or the other. I do think the Ohio State Patrol logo of the Flying wheel is sort-a unique and would be neat to own.

Here is my Illinois State Police marked model 39 no-dash. A model 39 was my first pistol. I sold it to my brother with a promise to be the buy-it-back option. No need to tell how that went. I got this one just because of the fact that a 39 was my first and I wanted one to replace it.
It must've been marked at the factory prior to finishing? Says Ill. S.P. 288 on the left side of the frame.
I also remember the safety -on my first one- cracking in half. S&W replaced it for free and wanted to study the old parts to see why it failed.

MPD 091 M65-1
This is my one and only PD gun that was bought last year. I'm not sure who MPD is, but they really took good care of their guns. P&R, 4" w/ red ramp front sight and a great lock up. The Hogues were on when I bought it. At $400, I probably paid too much, but it's one of those things I had to have. Over time I didn't let the price bother me. I like this gun!

BigG-in-Tn: Does your M 39 have the short extractor; looks like the extractor is broken in half but the front half is secured by a vertical pin? If so, it's a really desirable variation of the Model 39.

I collected police marked guns for the last 20 years, but am concentrating on Boston Police guns. My NYPD collection would have croaked me, way too many variations over the years, so I am focusing on B.P.D.

1990 model 65-4
Here is a picture of my 65-4 LE trade in. It had the Pach Grippers on it when i bought it. I still use them on it during deer season but it wears a beautiful set of checked targets the rest of the time. I think that I gave $389.00 for it. It came with the original box( blue plastic). The guy threw in a box of shells. I love it, very accurate. Very tight with a nice SA/DA trigger.
Peace,
Gordon
It is marked WCS 2751 below the cylinder on the left side.

I picked up a Ruger Speed Six stainless a number of years ago that is marked USDA. It is in excellent condition and shows no evidence of holster wear, etc.
Not sure why USDA people would need firearms in the first place.

NYPD service and off duty weapons have never had an NYPD mark since they are property of the officer, not the Department.

To me, that would garner my interest more than just regular PD marked ones. That's pretty cool.

I've owned four LEO guns but they were not marked. Sold two and still have two.
A F.D.L.E. issue Beretta 92FS that sold it to a friend with a buy back option.
A Homestead Fl Police GLOCK 19 Gen 2 that I sold to my brother with a buy back option.
A University of Florida Police Beretta 92FS
Another Homestead Fl Police GLOCK 19 Gen 3. gave that one to my father.
They're all normal off the shelf guns that are not marked but I know that they're former Agency Guns due to when I purchased them. They were all trade in from those agencies to a local gun shop. Lou's Police Supply in Hialeah, FL.

The USDA has a law enforcement branch.... so does the US Department of Education, the IRS, and even the FAA. basically every federal regulatory agency has a law enforcement division within their ranks. If an agency can regulate and create laws then they can enforce them and arrest those that violate them.
Look at BATFE as a prime example. They are a regulatory agency that has an enforcement branch. They also create "laws" through regulatory powers.

Just picked up this New York State Police issue Official Police .38.
'62 production. The bluing is thin but the timing and lock up are perfect. Especially for an almost 50 year old duty gun. So much for the "fragility" issue of Colts. Will go well with my NYSP 28-2.

This .38-44 Heavy Duty was from the Pueblo, Colorado Police Department. It's not marked, but the distributor that sold them confirmed that was where they were from.
This Model 10-5 was from the Rhode Island State Police and is so marked. SCSW 3 says that it is one of 29 shipped to the RISP in 1964.
I also have a 4" M&P Model of 1905, 4th Change, made in December 1945 that is marked "I.P.D." on the butt. I lived in the Midwest when I bought it, and I suspect that it belonged to the "Indianapolis Police Department", but I don't know for sure. It's about 98% and has one of the slickest actions that I have ever seen.

I just picked up this no-dash Model 66 at a gun show this weekend. The gun on the right in the photo is the one I am referring to. The seller said it was Memphis Police Department, but anyone that might have better information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Texas Department of Public Safety marked 28-2. From about 1978 I think. Currently in the custody of my son. I probably won't be getting it back.

Does anyone happen to have a Model 58 that is San Antonio PD marked?
One of those is on my list, and I'm curious as to how they are marked.
Thanks.

In regard to Cirrus' question, I joined the MPD in 1968 and we were required to buy our own guns. leather, and handcuffs. The Department bought everything and issued it, but we paid for it, and took it with us when we left the department. Nothing was marked. When I was on, they weren't into nickel plated short barrel guns either. We all were issued Model 10 M&P 4-inch heavy barrel Smiths. Don't know what happened later, but I'd be careful of what you showed photos of.

I have the ellusive San Antonio P.D. model 58. The marking appears to be department stamped, not rolled by Smith. It has SAPD on the left side of the frame just under the cylinder. Serial #N1878XX. I found it in Kenner,La. several years ago. Does anyone know how many of these were done this way? I had to have it shipped to my FFL because I don't live in Louisiana. I also have a 3" model 65 marked B.R.P.D. (Baton Rouge) I have several department marked riot guns also.

When the Marion County, Indiana Sheriff Department went to semi-autos in 1988, officers could buy their S&W 66's for $200.

While this one isn't marked as such, I got it from the Retired Michigan
State Police Trooper who was issued it when graduating from the MSP Academy
and who carried it while on duty for 11 years prior to the switch-over to semi-autos.
I still kick myself in the butt for not buying his marked Beretta semi-auto.
The M64 now does have an additional marking, which can be seen just in front of
the trigger guard. It denotes that Pistolsmith, Teddy Jacobson, Actions by "T" worked it.
A couple of weeks ago I picked up another non-marked MSP gun from
a Trooper, this time a M649 (no dash)
This 649 had been a Trooper's back-up gun for many years and based on
the wear characteristics it had seen a lot of use, a whole lot of use.....
Edited later to add: Here's the M649 mentioned above after a considerable
amount of work & getting new grips.
