SHTF scenario - what ONE longarm would you grab?
Let's say the SHTF; enormous civil unrest, martial law, looting, invasion, massive earthquake, EMF explosion or sun spots; whatever. You grab your bugout bag, your wife and/or dog, those rations and water you've stored, and head for the hills.
Oh yeah, you only have time and room for ONE longarm for protection, hunting, and urban warfare. Whatcha gonna grab?
Here are some popular choices:
Tricked out M4 carbine:
Mikhail Kalashnikov's baby:
The virtually indestructible Nylon 66:
That Model 70 Winchester - reach out and touch someone!
The pride of the Israelis - the Galil:
That M6 survival weapon - good enough for the USAF:
The full-size AR-15:
An M1 carbine?
Georgie Patton's favorite - the M1 Garand:
A precision Winchester Model 75 sporter .22:
A "tactical" Ruger 10/22:
The brute force and reliability of a Remington 870:
Old reliable - the M14:
A Model 92 in .44 or .357 - good enough for Duke:
A Model 1891/30 PU? Top sniper weapon of the Red Army:
Or how about the American counterpart - the 1903A4:
How about a hi-cap 9mm? The Sterling might work:
There's always the old reliable thutty-thutty:
If scaring your opponents makes sense, this one might do:
Or maybe a more modern SMG would do the trick:
The AR-7 was made for a survival scenario:
John Browning's takedown .22 is easy to pack:
A lot of folks have one or more of the SKS rifles:
There's always the free world's right arm - the FAL:
You know, I've seen EACH ONE of these guns lauded in print as the ideal survival long arm? I'm not taking sides here, so I'll ask you - if limited to only one of any of the above (or something else I haven't covered here), which would you choose and why?
Some criteria:
Weight
Ammo
Reliability
Maintenance
Accuracy
Practicality
Intimidation factor
Size
So? Which one, my learned brothers and sisters?
John

AK-47. It's reliable, easy to clean, lots of ammo available for it, there's lots of parts available for it, and I can use it on 4 legged creatures, as well as 2 legged animals.

AR 15. Most versatile of the group. Accurate and capable past 200 yds, light to carry, easy to keep fed and capable of fast and sustained firepower if required. I'd also bring a supply of subsonic (.22 short powered) loads for quiet close in hunting.

I only have 2 of the ones pictured. I'm afraid I'd have to forget the .22 semi auto and go with the .357 lever. I can carry lots of .357 in my pockets and reload on the run.
I do believe I'd be spending most of my time under cover and wouldn't be taking any shots over 100 yards. If I had to run I wouldn't be taking any 200 yard shots anyway. My only misgiving would be that my red dot sight might give me away.

Beat me to it
It's a .308, light enough for all day carry, accurate to six hundred yards, 1000 if converted to an EBR. The most dependable action ever made, with the possible exception of the AK.
Did I mention, it's a .308??
My wife's carrying rifle 2 in that scenario, our trusty Marlin .357. Think a woman can't shoot a rifle, stick your head out, you won't do it but once.
My daughter was able to hit a Sundrop bottle at 50 yds when she was 11 ever time she pulled the trigger, hers is a Ruger 7.62x39. Again, lightweight, heavy punch.

One Hell of a scenario you came up with. Were you in Colorado yesterday loading up on marijuana?? You seem to have left out ufos and Godzilla.
The Hell with the wife...We all know how long it takes them to get ready.I would use that time loading my beer and smokes in the truck.I would also load a bag with spices and rub in case I had to put the dog down.Sheesh, only kidding...get over it!
Actually I find it impossible to get out quickly. You have to turn off the water...unplug everything...notify the Post Office and paperboy...change the message on the answering machine.
With the neighbors I have we'd be safer in our homes.Any threat that entered one end of the block would never make it to the other end alive. That includes Godzilla. LOL!

Either the .357/.38 Rossi 92 or the SKS. I own both of these, so limiting it to guns I actually possess.

Lots of good answers and plenty of disagreement. But we can ALL agree on what shortarm we would grab in a SHTF scenario.

Rossi 92. Last year it would have been my 357, but I gave that to my daughter for Christmas in '12, so it would be the stainless 44/40. Not the best caliber choice, because scrounging ammo would be a pain in the butt, but anybody I hit with it would go down, and it would take anything up to wapitis and algs, up to a hunnerd yards out.

I'd most likely grab a scoped 10/22 and a duffle bag full of 25 rounders. I don't use the "tactical" stuff. Looks dopey and fragile to me.
Running second to the 10/22 would be a Mossberg 930 SPX.

Good answer! as Steve Harvey says.
Actually, looters and rioters might find themselves in a mess in my area. I'm thinking they would be outgunned. I believe I'm probably the only wm in the county that doesn't own an AK or AR. , and I have a few other types. I would be bugging in rather than out, unless there was some kind of health hazard.

my uberti 357, because i can shoot it fast and accurately .it holds 11 rounds of 38 and 10 357mag and it can be reloaded quickly .i always have hundreds of cowboy rounds on hand . not optimal i know but its what i have at the moment. if i can have time to order a rifle before godzilla comes, i would like a xcr-m or an m1.

I'd choose the m1 garand
On another note, that m6 survival rifle looks highly interesting. (The impulse buyer says) I want one now

AR-15, AKM, M1, M-14, M70, 10/22, 870, 1903, M1 Carbine.
I am very familiar with each and everyone of the above, so any would do. I would pick the AR15.

AR-15. a little more bark than the M4, and if it's still good enough for the Marines, it's good enough for me.

It's just something to think about. I get it though. If I was prepared for a shtf scenario, I'd have more than one gun but that's just a relatively small part of the plan. Some people would starve or freeze with a gun in their hands

If you can't beat them, join them
I figure in order for there to be millions of zombies and 12 survivors, the vast majority of us will die like that.

I'm going with my Bulgarian SLR-95 Kalashnikov.
Weight - Moderate
Ammo - More 7.62x39 than any other caliber I have.
Reliability - 100% reliable in the most difficult environments.
Maintenance - Minimal
Accuracy - Excellent up to 200 yards with iron sights.
Practicality - Immensely practical for CQB and intermediate distance target acquisition.
Intimidation factor - Yes
Size - Par with SOCOM 16 and various ARs/M4s

The pump shotgun, sighted in for slugs out to 50 yds, and lots of other options.
Light, easy to carry, and darn near indestructible.

Like many others have said; I'm not bugging out to anywhere!
I live outside the town; I have 2,000 gal LP tank that can run the entire house through my big generator - that includes my own well pump and geothermal system.
I have a 3,000 sq ft basement with enough food to last at least a month.
However, my first choice for a long gun would have to be one of the Remington 870's (already in the basement gun safe) with a Model 92 in 38/357 as back up!

I'd have to go with my 870. I've got an assortment of slugs and buck, and if I need to shoot beyond 50 yards or so, I'd have my 629 for that.

First off, I'd have to narrow the choice down to longarms that I actually have. Either the M4 or M1 Carbine would work well for me.

I own a number of the rifles the OP listed in starting this thread, but the one I would grab in a hurry would be my Steyr Scout Rifle.
It fires an effective cartridge, it's simple and reliable, compact, light, and superbly accurate. In designing it, Jeff Cooper said he wanted a do-it-all rifle, one that could be used in a variety of different scenarios...and I think he succeeded brilliantly.

I don't anticipate any bugout scenario actually developing but it is
interesting to think about the attributes of various survival-combat
weapons we might own. We really are lucky to be able to buy and
possess a wide variety of military type firearms. To narrow it down to
only one certainly requires compromising but one gun in particular has
proven to be rugged and reliable under the worst possible conditions
for many years now. Mikhail Kalashnikov's AK 47 is the one gun I
would want with me in a true survival situation. It's attributes are
well known but some still want to dismiss it as "inaccurate". How much accuracy is enough? My preban Poly Tech Legend AK will shoot 3 1/2"
groups at 100 yds from benchrest with late 80s Norinko FMJ ammo.
Some of the other guns listed here will not do as well I'm sure. My
Romanian rifle with it's sheet metal receiver may or may not do as
well but I don't know because I've never tried it yet. But we don't
carry benches around to shoot from in survival situations so the
limiting factor is really the shooter himself. I think the AK is fully
as accurate as it needs to be.

Might be tempted to just take the Sub2K40 with 25 rd mags that would also fit my Glock 23. I like concealed portability. But can't see myself leaving the rest behind AK, AR, SKS, Mini14, 92SRC, 1894C, 9422mag, 39A, 870, 500A and many more, oh well, guess I'm not leaving, come and get me.

Send him to Caj's brigade. And further more Caj it wouldn't be a short arm if you hadn't played with big firecrackers a couple of nights ago.
And for Mr. Paladin's question. In your scenario of grabbing and heading for the hills. I live there. I'm already there. Fire wood, canned goods, 3 deer in the freezer, chain saws, sleeping bags and guns are at the ready awaiting my command. For general patrol duty around the farm I would take my Colt AR. For hungry townsfolk I want claymores, for unwanted relatives a high capacity Model 12 loaded with buck shot and my beloved Model 70's for sending messages long distance.
Legions of eaten deer can attest to the finality of a good 130 gr hand load. If one is not yet the undead arrangements can be made. If one is an undead it will be Deja Vue all over again.

To the OP
That was an impressive list of arms and photos.
If those were mine, I would invite all my neighbors over to my house and as they say "Shelter in Place".
That being said,I could never "grab one gun to go".
I realize this is all hypothetical,
but I would much rather fight it out with the whole arsenal.

During the Y2K non event I kept my Garand and a couple web belts of ammo handy. Now what is behind the door is a Mosin Nagant M44 with a couple belts of ammo. However while my every intent is to stay home if we did bug out someone in the family would be carrying our High Point 995 carbine. Handy size, reliable and 9mm ammo will probably be common.

I have had my Benelli M1 for quite a while. (They cost $550 when I bought it )
I love that it is an automatic, and I never found a shell it would not feed.
The short barrel is quite a bit louder than "normal" shotguns.
It will hold 9 shells, has ghost ring sites, and seems to put a smile on everybody's face that shoots it.
The only thing mine has ever been shot at is clay targets.

I don't have much choice. Would have to grab the only center fire long gun I have. A mini-14. If I was choosing from the list, I would take the Plain Jane M16. KISS
