How not to hunt
Bison Hunt With 500 S&W Pistol - YouTube
In this video, a self described hunter takes a pot shot at a bison from about 15 yards.
Whether or not you need to close the distance to determine the animals sex, nothing justifies this sort of unsportsmanlike conduct. "Hunters" like this are what animal rights activists complain about!

What a sad thing to witness. No respect for himself or the animal. He must have a very poor family structure. What a shame........on both parts..............

That wasn’t a hunt, that was a cull. Bison ranchers often sell opportunities to shoot a captive animal to remove undesirables from their herd. It's an additional source of revinue to help sustain the ranch. It’s not hunting and it’s not sporting, but it is fairly common. Posting that does a disservice to sportsman. The video only lasted one minute and ended before the animal went down.
Ken Waters, the past editor of Gun Digest, used a Chapuis double rifle to cull a bison. It was documented in one of the past annuals. It took several shots to bring it down and the experience left a bad taste in Ken‘s mouth. If someone is to be criticized, blame the rancher for allowing a handgun (underpowered) and blame the cameraman for posting it. I’m sure you wouldn’t like to see how your beef is processed either.
